The Puraanas can be called the 'magnifying glass ' of the the Vedas
A brief exposition of an idea may not make a lasting or deep impression of the mind..On the other hand ,if the same is presented as an interesting story or anecdote,it will stay in the mind
1) cont..
Cont Puranaas
How it impacts when told as a story
Vedas merely says "सत्यंवद"
How adherence to truth leads to undying glory is narrated in the story of King Harishchandra

Veda says "धर्मचर" follow the path of Dharma
Is well illustrated by the story of Pandavas in Mahabarata
#Puraanas should be taught as History
As they are Historical in Content
Puraanas are also history with an ennobling purpose
They educate people in right& wrong
& present us the effect of good & evil
There is no use of History if it doesn't teach/guide us to lead a better life
The object of PURAANAS ,is to benefit the mind and mould Man & Society to lead better life..
There is no use of a HISTORY which has nothing to teach us to lead a better life!
It's not right to think #History is confined to empires, wars, invasion & Dynasty
Cont..Why teach Puraanas
All things have a History
But why give importance to only political History alone?
The Puraanas keep Dharma (ethics) as the central theme and weave a pattern using not only deeds of the king but illustrious men, rishis&commenors
Also gives insight to cultural life, art,&sciences
Although Puraanas are Historical in content, they present only selected events in such a way as to educate the people in right and wrong &make them tread the path of righteousness
Though king Surya &Chandra Vamsa are mentioned, the kings of no importance are mentioned in passing..
Puraanas, those who serve as an eg for us to follow would be dealt with at great detail
The father of Uttanapaada &Dhruva's son,who ruled ,are referred to in Bhaagavata Purana, only in a sentence or two
Life of Dhruva, which serves as a lesson, rich in devotion is given in detail
No credence can be given to Puraanas,as it contains matters beyond the realm of known natural phenomena' is Modern View
That Devas freely roamed earth, gave boons..
A woman was cursed&she turned into stone, the stone was blessed& it turned back into a woman.
Dismissed as fantasy
It's hard to believe certain things which happened in d past
Every great Epic of the past bears ample testimony to the powers of Veda Mantra,High Penance, exalted Yogic Discipline!
It does not speak well for English education if it rejects as fiction all that science cannot prove
Are #Puranas true?
Why Puraanas should be taught !
In fact,What science could not perceive a few years ago,is being perceived by scientist now
The Treasure That Maharishi VedaVyasa Left
What is Puraanas
"Pura"means in the past
Those that narrate things of past are Puraanas.. Of course they also deals with the prediction as to the future..
He wrote Puraanas in order that common man may come to know of vedic Philosophy
#Puraanas
Fables,History, geography, philosophy
Vyasa created treasure treatise on all these in simple& interesting manner so that they may not only appeal to the intelligent but also to the common man
Vyasa's Objective was to educate the common man in the path of righteousness
The same Vyasa who rearranged the Veda, was also responsible for giving us the 18 puraanas
Each Puraanas keep a single deity as it's main theme. They are broadly classified into 3 categories Vaishnava Cult,Shiva Cult and Shakti Cult thus covering large number of deities
Brahma Purana
Padma Purana
Vishnu Purana
Siva Purana
Srimad Bagavatham
Naarada Purana
Maarkandeya Purana
Agni Puraana
Bhavishyat Puraana
Brahma Vaivartha Purana
Linga Purana
Varaaha Purana
Skanda Purana
Maha Purana
Koorma Purana
Matsya Purana
Garuda Purana
Brahmaananda Purana
In addition to the 18 puraanas ,there are also 18 or more Upa Puraanas ..Eg.. Vinayaka puraana,Kalki puraana are among the Upa puraana
Description of the glories of the month of the year .. Tulaa puraana Naaga puraana,Vaisaaka puraana are all from 18 main and Upa puraanas
These 18 Puranas add up to 400,000 granthas
A grantha is a shloka with 32 syllables
Skanda Purana alone has 100,000 shlokas,One of d biggest book
Among 18 puranas, ten are said to be Saivite
Many anecdotes, fables now known to us are contained in these
The Ramayan & Mahabharata
Are not included as Puraanas but as "Itihaasa"
Itihaasa is Iti-Ha-Asam
Means it happened thus
The 'Ha' in middle denotes truly, surely
Thus Itihaasa is record of facts,it happened at the time it was written
Valmiki wrote the Ramayana when Rama was living
With the five Pandavas ,Vyasa actually witnessed the various incidents narrated in the Mahabharata
Even when they were first brought out those who lived were acquainted with various characters portrayed and the incidents narrated in these epics
That's why they are called Itihaasa
