A brief exposition of an idea may not make a lasting or deep impression of the mind..On the other hand ,if the same is presented as an interesting story or anecdote,it will stay in the mind
1) cont..
How it impacts when told as a story
Vedas merely says "सत्यंवद"
How adherence to truth leads to undying glory is narrated in the story of King Harishchandra
Veda says "धर्मचर" follow the path of Dharma
Is well illustrated by the story of Pandavas in Mahabarata
As they are Historical in Content
Puraanas are also history with an ennobling purpose
They educate people in right& wrong
& present us the effect of good & evil
There is no use of History if it doesn't teach/guide us to lead a better life
There is no use of a HISTORY which has nothing to teach us to lead a better life!
It's not right to think #History is confined to empires, wars, invasion & Dynasty
Cont..Why teach Puraanas
But why give importance to only political History alone?
The Puraanas keep Dharma (ethics) as the central theme and weave a pattern using not only deeds of the king but illustrious men, rishis&commenors
Also gives insight to cultural life, art,&sciences
Though king Surya &Chandra Vamsa are mentioned, the kings of no importance are mentioned in passing..
The father of Uttanapaada &Dhruva's son,who ruled ,are referred to in Bhaagavata Purana, only in a sentence or two
Life of Dhruva, which serves as a lesson, rich in devotion is given in detail
That Devas freely roamed earth, gave boons..
A woman was cursed&she turned into stone, the stone was blessed& it turned back into a woman.
Dismissed as fantasy
Every great Epic of the past bears ample testimony to the powers of Veda Mantra,High Penance, exalted Yogic Discipline!
It does not speak well for English education if it rejects as fiction all that science cannot prove
Why Puraanas should be taught !
In fact,What science could not perceive a few years ago,is being perceived by scientist now
What is Puraanas
"Pura"means in the past
Those that narrate things of past are Puraanas.. Of course they also deals with the prediction as to the future..
He wrote Puraanas in order that common man may come to know of vedic Philosophy

Vyasa's Objective was to educate the common man in the path of righteousness
Each Puraanas keep a single deity as it's main theme. They are broadly classified into 3 categories Vaishnava Cult,Shiva Cult and Shakti Cult thus covering large number of deities

Many anecdotes, fables now known to us are contained in these
Are not included as Puraanas but as "Itihaasa"
Itihaasa is Iti-Ha-Asam
Means it happened thus
The 'Ha' in middle denotes truly, surely
Thus Itihaasa is record of facts,it happened at the time it was written
Valmiki wrote the Ramayana when Rama was living
Even when they were first brought out those who lived were acquainted with various characters portrayed and the incidents narrated in these epics
That's why they are called Itihaasa
