WHY ARE WE ALLOCATING EMERGENCY AID FOR THE ARTS?

Screamed by people who have been watching Netflix, reading books, and playing video games for 18 hours/day.
The WPA Federal Art Project during the Great Depression gave us thousands of incredible artists and lasting work now considered to have been created by "American Masters."

Okay, a lot of us freelancers have joked about it, but the truth is many of us DO work in relative self-isolation for months at a time.

This quarantine may be longer than expected. My suggestion is, even as you may be anxious for damn good reason, give yourself morale breaks. 1/
Yes, make sure you have your physical needs covered as best you can.

But it’s important to do things that bring calmness and joy. 24 hours a day of anxiety isn’t helpful and makes things worse.

Relief from that mindset is an actual necessity. 3/
It’s okay to do things that take your mind off anxiety.

I recommend starting a book series, reading favorite comics, playing video games (especially rpgs, that focus on advancement and story development), puzzles and music.

A few hours of pleasure is a real health boost.

Here we learn that guys really like video games.
Here's a shocking twist: On p. 144, he blames male youth unemployment on video games. I thought it was automation?

"Games have gotten so good that they have made dropping out of work a more appealing option."
How do these young men get by? They live with their parents. More men age 18-34 now live with their parents than with their romantic partners.

1. "Fire and Fury: Inside the Trump White House" by Michael Wolff. Yes, I hate-read this book in a matter of days. Problematically, Bannon comes across as an articulate, insightful source and not an arch nationalist parasite. Will Wolff's depiction be hagiography in the future?
2. "The Invention of the White Race, Volume 1: Racial Oppression and Social Control" and "The Invention of the White Race, Volume 2: The Origin of Racial Oppression in Anglo-America" by Theodore Allen. Who knew how important Bacon's Rebellion (1676) was to the history of racism?

As I ended the semester and then moved into winter break, I've put writing and academic reading on hold for a few weeks. Enjoyed family time, reading fantasy novels, playing video games, and lots of doggo time. /1
Now I have lots to do to get ready for the AHA & Spring, but I'm in a much better place to do it all than I would have been otherwise. Academia often teaches us that "time off" is bad--YOU SHOULD BE WRITING--but there comes a point where you just can't do any more right then. /2
I've always been bad at balance, and continue to struggle with it really, but I've gotten better. Having an actual holiday means that while I may feel "behind" now, I know it's an illusion, that I'll have much better flow and productivity bc I let me brain be jello for 2 wks. /3

Look, if you're not informed because you're constantly getting high and watching Bananaman reruns or playing video games 20 hours a week, you should feel bad about yourself.
But if you're not informed because you have, like, a job and a family and other responsibilities due to your God-given vocation, and if you don't want to spend your 2 nightly unwinding hours reading about foreign policy, etc... there's no shame in that.
It's fine to not know everything. It's fine to be out of the loop. It's fine to say, "not my monkeys, not my circus." Heck, if you couldn't get yourself sufficiently informed because of higher obligations, it's fine to not vote.
