This week, people have been discussing if eating #oysters conflicts with following a plant-based diet.

Today, we’re taking a look at the definition of sentience and #veganism—and at animal species that have been proven to be more sentient than humans used to think. 👇1/14 Image
Although there is legal and scientific disagreement about #sentience, there are some standards that are broadly accepted.

According to @SentienceInst, sentience is simply the ability to have positive and negative experiences, including pain. 2/14
The concept of animal #sentience is important for ethical reasons.

If #animals are sentient beings capable of feeling pain, most humans would agree that it is morally wrong to cause unnecessary pain or suffering to them. 3/14…

A quick thread on why helping #bumblebee queens who might get trapped in your house, conservatory, greenhouse or polytunnel to escape quickly is so important at this time of year. Please pass it on/#retweet. Thanks.🙏🏼 1/10
#bees #bumblebees
First: the #bumblebee lifecycle in brief.
Queens emerge from hibernation in early spring. They’re hungry obviously and need food. They feed up and immediately set about searching for a suitable site to establish a nest. 2/10
#bees #bumblebees
Once they identify a suitable site they store a small amount of food and lay their first batch of eggs. They sit on these eggs to keep them warm making necessarily efficient foraging trips in between to maintain the energy required to produce the heat for the eggs. 3/10

In order for #nature to thrive, we need to create a mosaic of habitats nationwide and adopt this principal in our own #gardens. From woodland to scrub, #meadows to short grass and #ponds to wetlands. A variety of habitats is best for species diversity. 🧵
Even in a 50sqm garden, we can have most of the above mentioned habitats but on a smaller scale. Small trees such as Rowan, Crab Apple and Elder can work really well in small areas without getting too big or casting too much shade.
Moving down from this, we can add shrubs such as Hazel, Alder Buckthorn, Guelder Rose, Dog rose, Wild Privet and Holly which will provide so many flowers for insects and nesting potential for birds in the spring. As well as larval food plants for moths and butterflies.

Heatwaves, droughts... We can't ignore climate change ! Does climate change affect plants, pollinators? Does drought affect pollination, the cornerstone of the functioning of terrestrial ecosystems?

2/17 Manuscript accepted in @JEcology: Long‐term experimental drought alters floral scent and pollinator visits in a Mediterranean plant community despite overall limited impacts on plant phenotype and reproduction…
3/17 We measured floral traits in a natural Mediterranean community under drought: floral scent, flower number, colour, size, nectar production. We also measured pollinator visits, species richness and composition, and plant reproduction.

New impacts of glyphosate:
Silvia Ribeiro of @ETC_Group summarises the latest scientific studies confirming the damaging impact of #glyphosate on human, animal and plant health caused via harmful imbalances in the digestive & immune systems… (Spanish text) Image
@ETC_Group It's not just cancer. A Canadian study published in 2022 studies the association of neurological and psychiatric diseases with the disruption of the intestinal flora in humans due to #glyphosate, a disruption that would also have intergenerational impacts…
@ETC_Group On top of the known effects of hormonal disruption, new study shows the presence of glyphosate residues and/or its metabolites in post-menopausal women is associated with DNA methylation, a molecular alteration that can cause cancer & accelerate cell aging…

#Bee Twitter - I put up a thread last Sunday about queen #bumblebees this time of year and how to help - thanks to you it got 800k+ impressions meaning tens of thousands of people are better ‘bee informed’.
Can we do it again?
PLEASE RETWEET this new thread to help save more 1/9
#queens. Bumblebees don’t understand glass - they get confused and trapped and exhausted. Likewise with polytunnel plastic. So if you see or hear a #bumblebee buzzing & banging against your window she’s not trying to get into your house to hang with you - she’s confused. 2/9
If she’s already inside your house and is buzzing at the window she’s trapped. So you need to get her out &
as quickly as you can - don’t leave her suffer while you do something else. Why?
#Bumblebees with a full stomach have about 40 minutes of ‘energy’ in them before they 3/9

Lots of people asking us about #bumblebees at the moment - why they’re seeing them on the ground - so here’s a quick thread to explain what they’re up to. Please share as every #queen that survives means a new colony that gets to exist & produce new queen #bees for next year! 1/7
Bumblebee queens emerge in early spring from hibernation and immediately need to feed - that’s why early flowering plants are so important. Apart from feeding, their mission at this time is to find a suitable site to establish a nest. Hence you will observe queens flying low 2/7
…to the ground zig-zagging across the landscape - they’re house-hunting. Stopping to explore in long grass and vegetation, hollows in trees, stone walls, under sheds and even compost heaps. During this time bumblebee queens spend a lot of their time resting between flights. 3/7

@ThatSeanKeenan @AtlantaMagazine since i was not asked for my answers; here they are:
@ThatSeanKeenan @AtlantaMagazine #1-"the cop one"
unlike most mayoral candidates contending in this race; i believe in the abolition of our policing institutions. we can build a safety department which doesn't wield any lethal power(power no state should hold btw) #AbolishThePolice
@ThatSeanKeenan @AtlantaMagazine #2-"the crime one"
most crime is not a something we should fight from the top down but eliminate from the bottom up via assuring a society where needs are provided for; acts of desperation will be drastically reduced..

Here is an example. It is not praying, but eating a bumblebee.

#WorldBeeDay: Despite their role in pollinating our plants, which are responsible for the sustenance of humans and mostly all other organisms on this planet, bee populations have been on a steady decline due to large-scale ignorance regarding their existence.

#WorldBeeDay2021: To conserve these ecologically significant pollinators, it is imperative to not only value their existence, but also understand its different components: habitats, behaviours, species diversity, shapes, colours and sizes.

Road verges can provide habitats for pollinators such as #bees, butterflies & beetles. 🐝🦋🌻

But are pollinators at risk from pollution & being hit by vehicles? 🚗💨 & how can we best manage verges for pollinators?

Our new study addresses these Qs:…
1/n Image
Given concerns about pollinator/insect declines, road verges present a major opportunity because they…

1. Can be flower-rich habitats.

2. Cover ~1% of land in Europe/North America.

3. Are managed by relatively few organisations (e.g. local councils & highways agencies). Image
Road verges are often comparable to other grasslands, so can be managed as such. BUT…

Pollinators in road verges are also exposed to pollution, roadkill etc. so we need a specific assessment of if/how we should best use them.

We reviewed 140 studies to answer the following Qs: Image

Tread: It’s #FolkloreThursday so I thought I should do some folklore on common #wildlife in the U.K.!
One of my favourites is that if you have a #bees on your property you should always keep them in the know about the goings on in your house.
Also if there’s a death you should turn the hive towards the road so the bees can mourn when the hearse goes by.
#BarnOwls were often seen as bad omens. They were used to predict the weather.
However in the North it was seen as lucky to see an owl.
