Disagree. SAGE is getting this wrong. We must test as many people as possible so we can isolate and treat those who are sick (with NHS staff in WHO-standard kit). Long overdue for ministers to do their job & challenge the #COVID19 advice they’re getting
If everyone knew whether they were #COVID19 positive, negative or immune (and how long immunity lasts), we could look after each other better, get back to ‘normal’ faster and minimise disruption. Intelligence (in all senses of the word) is key. Let’s not fight this blind
In contrast, here’s what Germany is doing. We can’t both be right and I know which country I’d rather be in right now

On #Brexit, these #EUelections2019 show that, if a political party stands in the middle of the road, it gets squashed. That‘s what I predicted when I resigned from Government last year. And it’s what has happened to @Conservatives and @UKLabour
So what next? If the purpose of government is to follow the will of the people (at any cost), the only politically viable Brexit is a hard one (WTO etc). But neither major political party will get a Westminster majority by delivering Hard Brexit without explicit public consent
And forget any soft Brexit. It’s not politically viable (for the record, I’ve always held that it’s the worst of both worlds) and anyone thinking we get further concessions from the @EU_Commission by playing hardball is living in cuckoo land. The WA is it, take it or leave it

What a day for #Brexit! All in all, we’re in a more powerful place now to do what’s right for the country.
‘No deal’ is dead: the @EUCourtPress Advocate General‘s opinion is that the UK can unilaterally revoke article 50 under certain circumstances. So we don’t have to leave the EU without a deal unless we’re irrational enough to decide that’s what we want
Parliament will rightly now be able to consider the Government’s legal advice on the ‘Withdrawal Act’ before it has to vote whether or not to accept the Govt’s #Brexit deal next Tuesday

Tonight’s votes in @HouseofCommons on #Brexit were really quite shameful. The Government adopted changes that went against the proposals in its own white paper (that it had only agreed last Friday). It changed its position at the last minute
The first duty of Government is to do what’s right for our country and to be honest. This sort of last-minute change undermines both and I certainly couldn’t in all honesty support it. That would be politics at its worst....
Instead, the Government must face up to the #Brexit challenge, be honest with people about what’s possible and what isn’t, #SuspendA50 until it has worked out what it wants - and later offer a #2ndEUref once it has established good, realistic options for our country

From Tom Friedman to Donald Trump, a growing chorus of voices is calling on us to surrender to the coronavirus.

A few days ago, the WSJ suggested that it is time to wind down the “vast social-distancing project of the last 10 days.”

On the weekend, Tom Friedman suggested that we need “less herd mentality and more herd immunity.”

Now, Trump is vowing to reopen the economy by Easter.
Concern about the economy is not frivolous. Recessions exact a real human toll.

To ignore the economic damage done by efforts at containing the pandemic is not to put human lives above profit; it is to ignore one form of suffering in the service of alleviating another.

Tired of hearing this "What else could Trump have done" garbage.
US and South Korea had same lead time. Both had first cases on Jan 21.
What did they do differently? /1
Within weeks of the outbreak in China, 4 Korean companies had manufactured tests from World Health Organization recipe and the country had a system that could assess 10,000 people a day. US did nothing. /2
Because of this, South Korea has now tested over 250,000 people. South Korea has tested 3,692 per million citizens. US has only tested 5 per million citizens.
They implemented drive thru testing immediately. /3

The public’s understanding of the purpose of Covid testing at this stage of the crisis is upside down. And it’s dangerous.

There was a time when we needed to test as many people as possible to identify, trace & contain individual cases.

In places like NYC, that time is over. 1/
Because we now have “community spread” here, we are in an entirely new phase.

We are staring in the face of an epic overrunning of our healthcare system. We need to preserve EVERY element of this system for people who are acutely ill. 2/
If every person who feels ill or thinks they were exposed to someone with Covid tries to get a test it will push the healthcare system to the breaking point.

At this point, testing--and the staff, facilities, and resources around it--needs to be reserved for the ACUTELY SICK. 3/

There are two new confirmed cases of COVID-19 in New York City. One new patient is a man in his 40s, and one new patient is a woman in her 80s.

Neither patient has a connection to travel nor any of the other local individuals diagnosed with COVID-19.
Both are currently hospitalized and in the intensive care unit.

City disease detectives are tracing close contacts of both individuals and will ensure they are appropriately isolated and tested immediately.
We are going to see more cases like this as community transmission becomes more common. We want New Yorkers to be prepared and vigilant, not alarmed.

One completely consistent divide I’ve observed over the years: anyone who has actually managed a community knows not to feed trolls. The people who think that drawing attention to trolls is helping have never managed a community.
“Don’t feed the trolls” was a mantra for early web communities because we saw what happens when you don’t. When you draw attention to trolls, you create more trolls. They’re drawn to it like moths to a streetlight.
Note that “don’t feed the trolls” does NOT mean “don’t do anything.” On the contrary, you have to do something. It’s just that the things you do must be invisible to the troll. If they know they’ve got your attention, they will never let it go.
