I’m trying to make a point about why Generation Z is the most anxious generation in history, so bear with me while I break it down.

/THREAD/
Let’s start in the 1980s. Would anyone mind listing all the major, world-changing events that happened that decade?

I can count maybe two, the embassy bombing and the Internet going global.

2/12
Moving into the 1990s, can someone list all the major events?

I can count one, the fall of the USSR.

You can probably see where this is going by now.

3/12
Ah, the 2000s, Gen Z is born. Would anyone dare list all the world changing events?

I can count, shit, way too many.

9/11, War on terror, global financial crash, H1N1 epidemic, this isn’t even the beginning.

4/12
What about the 2010s, anything better?

Well, Russia invades Ukraine, we get Brexit, we get Trump, FARC accord in Colombia collapses. Yeah, nothing good either.

5/12
And do I even have the mention the 2020s? It’s like someone made the “Worst of the past 30 years” collection.

We’re three months in and already have Trump, Brexit, a financial crash, a pandemic, and behind this all climate change is burning us alive.

I wonder why Gen Z is so anxious... well shit, could it maybe be cause we were born and grew up in a shitstorm.

We get hit on one cheek and have to turn around to get hit on the other.

We can’t even look at the future for hope, cause that sucks too.

7/12
Yes, previous generations fought wars and lived through depressions. None did it all at once, while trying to save the literal planet at the same time.

Millennials at least got to grow in the relative peace of the 90s, we got thrown right into the storm.

8/12
I’m not writing this to make anyone feel bad, but to maybe make someone reconsider their tasteless comment next time I complain about not having a graduation (cause trust me, I’ll keep complaining).

9/12
I understand if you feel this is just the hand we were dealt and that we should deal with it, that’s what everyone told you when it got bad.

But at least have a little bit of an open mind and be a little empathetic. I don’t think that that is asking too much.

10/12
I guess I just needed to rant for a little. Maybe explain why I find it so frustrating when people call me selfish for complaining about having to stay home.

11/12
I know most aren’t reading this, but I hope it helps understand just why my generation is so hopeless and anxious.

When you expect to die before hitting 60, either by a bullet or by climate change, joking about death isn’t “sick” it’s just a coping mechanism.
