/ Why does sociology matter for preventing and mitigating epidemics? Let me tell you why...
/ Infectious disease is, by definition, a social and biological process. Both aspects of infectious disease matter a lot. You can consult other people for the biomedical side of things. Here, I'll tell you about the social science side of things.
/ Infectious disease is social because it travels through social networks. For example, transportation hubs are often the focal points of infection.
/ Culture also affects who gets the disease. #COVID19 , for example, can be transmitted by touch. So if you live in a culture with a lot of touching, you are more likely to get it once it enters your community.
/ So, getting an infectious disease is a very social thing, but treatment and prevention are extremely social.
/ For example, national wealth will affect the chance of recovery from disease. Wealthier nations have more resources to throw at problems.
/ Medical supplies also linked to social processes. Obviously, wealthy nations can make and buy more. But the speed at which you can make supplies, like face masks and ventilators, depends on how markets operate and their regulations.
/ Demography also shapes how disease changes society. Right now, we have an epidemic with a disproportionate impact on the elderly. Also, places with lots of young people (who party - e.g., Florida) will quickly spread disease via networks.
/ Finally, the response of public agencies, for profit entities, and healthcare provides is intensely social. How they perceive a problem, internally organize, and cooperate will affect society's capacity to address epidemics.
/ Bottom line: To understand epidemics and to properly respond, you will need social science, including sociology. Healthcare providers are the "tip of the spear," but you will need reliable social research to investigate and explore the best ways to combat infectious disease.
