Have you heard about ‘Bhaat’ also called ‘Pothi’? Many can connect to this listing of ‘Vangshavali’. This system of recording names of family members of a particular lineage/family/community - generation after generation has been continuing since antiquity. #Thread1
This is how historical lineage of many a dynasty could be traced. Me and my Maa-in-law Sudha (double postgraduate in Sanskrit/Hindi; read Vedas and sev ancient scriptures) often used to discuss about many things related to our glorious past including current affairs, #Thread2
politics, farmer issues, governments, etc.

During 1 of our interactions, Maaji narrated about ‘Bhaat’ or ‘Pothi’, about ‘Vangshavali’ of the family I am now connected via marriage. This is recorded by Brahmins entrusted by themselves into this task since generations. #Thread3
They do not charge anything; the family members of the ‘Vangshavali’ they record donate either in cash or kind (food items, etc.). A million thanks to Pothi recorders who have been selflessly doing this service since antiquity!

Maaji said when Dada Sasur Ji Buddh Singh #Thread4
(he is no more) was born, my great Dada Sasurji Rambal Singh donated a horse to the Pothi recorder Pandit. The Pandit used to travel on foot from house to house for recording; the gift of a horse proved a blessing for him. At times the Pandit visited just like that. #Thread5
Maaji recollects how the Pothi recorder used to read out the family ‘Vangshavali’ at the sacred space of the home (puja room/place for havan) and after that used to have tea, snacks or meal. When Yogaditya Singh Rawal was a child, the Pothi recorder visited our home. #Thread6
A curious Yogaditya asked him, “Dada ke pitaji ka naam, unke pitaji aur mataji ke naam, unke pitaji, unke pitaji”….and his questions were unending. And the Pothi recorder answered every question. So Buddh Singh Ji’s father was Rambal Singh; his father was Sher Singh; #Thread7
his father was Jagir Singh. And the list of the names of all generations was recorded. Our Pothi recorder’s family stays in a village near Murad Nagar.

Dada Sasur Ji Buddh Singh was born around year 1919. He was a farmer. An avid reader, he had knowledge of the Vedas, #Thread8
the Ramayana, Mahabharata, and our other ancient scriptures. He was married to Rami Devi. His mother was Hukam Kaur. His father - my great Dada Sasur Rambal Singh was Zamindar of 3 villages– Vedpura, Jaun Sivana, and Sadullapur, then under Bulandsheher; now under G Noida #Thread9
Rambal Singh had to pay revenue of all 3 villages to British who had records of every farmer. Many times farmers couldn't pay revenue. Rambal Singh paid on their behalf; never let the British know it. And he never let British commit atrocity farmers of his villages. #Thread10
