Basketball star Dennis Rodman talks about his first visit to North Korea! In the "Hotboxin" podcast by boxing legend Mike Tyson (53), the eccentric ex-athlete reports on the encounter with Kim Jong-un.
After his first visit, Rodmann was always drawn to the cart of the North Korean dictator. Even became part of the crazy propaganda show through his appearances and visits. In total, Rodman has been to the isolated country five times.
With varnished fingernails, a baseball cap and his characteristic earrings and piercings in his nose and mouth, Rodman sits in the podcast studio, smokes a fat cigar and freely explains what he thought when asked if he wanted to go to North Korea: "Yes, cool ! North Korea.
Sure I'm going! ”Before his first visit in 2013, Rodman knew little about the isolated country. He thought he would sign autographs there and play some basketball. Not even close. He should meet the dictator! In North Korea, he then sat in a hall -
on oversized, upholstered chairs. Chairs like for a king, that's how Rodman describes it today. Suddenly all the audience jumped up. 22,000 North Koreans rose from their seats and applauded. Rodman thought it was for him, wanted to raise his hand and wave to salute.
He was quickly told: "This is not for you, but for him!" - and he was shown Kim. "Who is he?" Rodman asked naively. "Our leader! English leader] ”was the answer. "Leader of what?" Rodman admits: He had no idea who Kim Jong-un was then.
The people in the hall cried and screamed. The applause lasted for 20 minutes! The isolated country is known for forcing its residents to cheer the dictator. Whoever criticizes, no matter how, is almost immediately put in a labor camp.
The population is poor, hungry and has little chance of escaping from the country and the dictatorship. Those who make it out of the country report torture, hunger and death. During his visit, the dictator Rodman asked: "Do you like my country?"
"Yes, it's okay," Rodman replied. Kim revealed to him that he was a big basketball fan. He later invited him to dinner: with vodka, karaoke and hot women. “We had dinner and were pretty drunk. He sang karaoke and I didn't understand what he was saying.
“They would never have talked about politics, only about sports and basketball. Kim's daughter Kim Ju-Ae (7) was still a toddler at the time, "a baby-girl", as Rodman almost affectionately says. He gave the dictator's daughter a jersey for children with the name Rodman on it.
When asked by Tyson about North Korea's human rights violations, Rodman says no. He never saw starving people. With such a high visit from the United States, all suffering citizens were surely hidden - common practice in the North Korean dictatorship.
Rodman continued: “I saw the military, I saw the missiles - everything. I saw the mausoleum [where the bodies of Kim's father and grandfather are still frozen frozen]. ” The very big propaganda show was apparently pulled off for the US basketball star.
It is well known that Rodman is an admirer of Kim: There are video recordings of Rodman saying "You are a friend for life" during his visits to the dictator - or singing him a birthday song.
