I’ve prepared a few more of the financial fact sheets for selected football clubs. To be clear, this is not new information as such, but just a more succinct presentation of previous data. This thread covers #AVFC, #AFCB, #CardiffCity, #HTAFC, #NCFC, #SUFC, #WatfordFC and #WWFC.
#AVFC posted huge £69m net loss. Operating loss even higher at £115m, including £46m promotion payments, but £14m HS2 compensation. Offset by £36m stadium sale and £11m player sales. Revenue fall due to lower parachute payments. Debt-free after write-offs and equity conversion.
#AFCB lost money 2 years in a row, as revenue has fallen from £136m to £131m, while wage bill has grown from £72m to £111m. Little benefit from low player sales. Debt up to £100m, 9th highest in PL. Spent £150m on player purchases in last 2 years with transfer debt up to £81m.
#CardiffCity had a small £3m profit in the Premier League, though much better than prior season’s £39m loss in the Championship. Revenue shot up from £35m to £125m, while wages only rose by £5m to £54m, the lowest by far in the PL. Club has £81m debt and owes £10m on transfers.
#HTAFC had lowest revenue in Premier League, not just in total £119m, but across all 3 revenue streams. Still posted profits both years in the top flight, as wages growth restricted. However, debt up to £77m, while £25m owed on transfers (£105m player purchases in last 2 years).
#NCFC revenue has been falling since relegation in 2016, in line with lower parachute payments. Wages up to £51m, due to promotion bonuses, leading to £39m pre-tax loss. Very low £2m profit from player sales compared to £48m in previous season. £24m debt, all external.
#SUFC promotion achieved despite mid-table Championship revenue of just £21m. Huge leap in wages from £19m to £41m, due to promotion bonuses, contributing to £35m operating loss, partly offset by £14m profit on player sales to give £21m net loss. Very low transfer spend and debt.
#WatfordFC returned to profitability in 2019, thanks to revenue rising £19m to £148m (higher league finish and FA Cup run) and profit on player sales increasing £19m to £22m, while wages were cut by £2m to £84m. However, debt has grown to £88m and also owe £79m on transfers.
Following promotion, #WWFC made a £20m pre-tax profit, as revenue shot up from £26m to £172m, though wages almost doubled to £92m. Included £12m profit from player sales. Debt has grown to £131m (all from owners), while club spent £111m on players (6th highest in PL).
I have now prepared these financial fact sheets for all the clubs that were in the Premier League in 2018/19 (except #CPFC and #NUFC, who have not yet published accounts for that season) plus those promoted in 2019/20. Let me know if you want me to re-publish any of these.
