If you caught the 6pm, then I mentioned that it took 2 days for me to give up perfectionism and give y'all a graphic.

Over 48 hours.
Tonight is a #FullMoon 🌕
Check the southern sky to see the "buck" moon after sunset.

#Jupiter and #Saturn🪐 will also be close to the moon (Jupiter appears closer to the moon, btw)

#13newsnow #astronomy #STEM Image
Tonight is also a #PenumbralLunarEclipse
Aka ☀️🌎🌕

The moon clips the outer part of Earth's shadow, called the penumbra. This area of the shadow is fainter than the umbra.

#13newsnow #STEMeducation #astronomy Image
A #PenumbralLunarEclipse happen when sun, Earth and moon are almost aligned... but not as aligned as a partial eclipse, which would be more visible

Don't expect to see much tonight or you might end up looking like

#STEMeducation #astronomy
Penumbral lunar eclipses = physics meets astronomy meets geometry (probably meteorology and chem mixed in there, too)
Y'all better dig these tweets up at the end of November for the next #PenumbralLunarEclipse
My brain is fried trying to wrap around these concepts

Don't @ me
I'm serious.

It's Wednesday so it's time for Wednesday's Weather Word (an exclusively online subsidiary of the #ScienceBehind series)
Today's word is "analemma"

#13newsnow #STEM #STEMeducation #STEMed #astronomy
Our friends (because we're all friends in science) at Stanford put together this cool site with some analemma plots from Greece ☀️

Well.. wouldn't the position of the sun remain the same all year?
No! And that's thanks to the combination of the Earth's tilt and our non-circular orbit around the sun.

The sleeveless police really are something else.

Before you press 'send' - Would you say those things to my coworkers who are shaped differently (read: thinner) than me?
I'm here to do the WEATHER for Hampton Roads' most accurate forecasting team.
Not have my body picked apart by strangers.

Y'all really wouldn't walk up to a stranger on the street and say those things. Why y'all walking in my inbox/mentions?
Also... there are million other more important things you could be doing rather than tweeting, emailing and messaging me.

Drink some water.
Donate to charity.
Grease your elbows.

So I didn't have a Wednesday Weather Word (a subsidiary of the #ScienceBehind franchise) yesterday. So here's one for you on this (not) Wednesday: #BlueMoon

Yes I know this is astronomy not weather but it's timely so stick with me here
#13newsnow #STEM #Astronomy #fullmoon
Check out this stellar (or should I say 'lunar'?) photo on our Skyview from this morning.

This month we have TWO #fullmoon, the first is today's #HarvestMoon and the second, a rare Halloween Blue Moon.
#13newsnow #STEM #astronomy
Last time there was a #FullMoon on #Halloween visible across the world was 76 years ago in 1944! Most people should be able to see it, weather permitting

The next time we may see a spooky full moon is 2039 as a full moon occurs on Oct 31st every 19 years

Good morning! Someone sent me a photo to ID last week and I thought it'd be a perfect time to bring back Wednesday's Weather Word (a subsidiary of #ScienceBehind)

#13newsnow #STEMeducation Image
Hard to spell
Difficult to say (at least for me)
And sometimes even challenging to see.

This sight is usually seen better around sunrise or sunset, due to the scattering of light during those times.

Anticrepuscular rays are often dimmer than their counterpart: crepuscular rays

The latter term comes from the Latin for "twilight". Crepuscular rays occur when sunlight streams through breaks in the clouds (some other objects can cause this, too)

each step of your life really prepares you for the next.
i'm sitting here thinking about how #isaias affected us in VA/NC and how if i never moved to Iowa, i might not have gotten the level of tornado/severe weather experience to prepare me for tropical coverage.

as tough as it was out there, i have no choice but to be grateful 🙏🏾
believe in the process even if you don't know what you're believing in or what's on the other side.

you'll look back on everything with near tears in your eyes.
