Foreign students at US universities who only offer online courses in the winter semester because of the corona virus are supposed to leave the country according to the will of the US government.
The US Immigration Service ICE announced that foreign students enrolled in such universities would have to leave the country or move to a university that offers face-to-face classes. Otherwise they face expulsion.
Foreigners who wanted to study at a university that taught exclusively online from autumn onwards would not be issued a visa. They are not allowed to enter the country. The new regulation affects students who hold or wish to apply for an F-1 student visa.
However, according to the ICE, it also applies to course participants in non-academic vocational educational institutions such as flight schools (M-1 visa). The authority said that this would modify a derogation created for the spread of the virus for the past summer semester.
Due to the spread of the coronavirus, this allowed more online courses than are actually allowed for foreigners. The CNN broadcaster reported that thousands of foreign students at universities or participants in vocational training programs could be affected.
Among other things, the United States' elite university Harvard had announced that it would hold all lectures online due to the corona virus in the winter semester.
About 40 percent of the bachelor students who live on campus are likely to move back into the dormitories and fraternities, said the university in the Boston suburb of Cambridge. The usual double occupancy should no longer exist.
At Princeton University, located between New York and Philadelphia, "most classes" will take place online, it said. There too, only half of the Bachelor's students should be allowed to move back to dormitories on campus.
In contrast to Germany, US universities with leisure facilities, parties and a much broader network of dormitories are often central to the social life of students. US President Donald Trump had already suspended various work visas last month.
At the same time, he extended the freeze on legal immigration to the end of the year, mainly related to foreigners seeking a green card for permanent residence in the United States.
The background to the disposition was the high level of unemployment resulting from the corona pandemic in the USA.
