Couple of important messages for #nurses #doctors other #HCW #COVID19 #covid19vic #PPE #occupationalexposure #safeworkplaces #SARSCoV2 #biohazard
1. Always remember basics of infection control
2. Keep a daily diary of your experiences (if you haven’t already)
1/
- keep hair short and tied back
- be clean shaven
- don’t wear any jewellery
- wear nothing below your elbows
- keep fingernails very short
- meticulous hand washing/cleaning
2/
- maintain physical distance at work
- talk less, be a bit quieter than usual
- maintain your energy - get enough sleep, food, rest, replenishing activity if you can
- try to smile a bit more (tough ask)
3/
- don’t rush things
- your patients safety depends on you being safe - remind yourself of that
4/
I’ve been hearing victim blaming statements like “PPE wasn’t donned and doffed correctly” “#hcw got it from the
And also “healthcare hero” “nurses sacrifice themselves” narrative
5/
Our work is challenging, heartbreaking but none of us signed up to die or get a long term injury from work - workplace must be safe for healthcare workers like it is on other industries
6/
Keeping daily diary can help for a lot of reasons:right now one reason is document whats happening to you at work &outside work
Keeping track of daily experiences & exposures may be very helpful if you get sick with COVID19:to work out if you got it at work or not
7/
Details to include daily might be:
Date
How you got to work
Where you worked
What PPE was supplied, how long you work it for (hours in a row, like your face mask)
That you donned and doffed it to the best of your ability with the instructions you were given
8/
Events that occurred at work
Amount of time you have to have a break/rest
Hours worked
How you travelled home
Other activities you did before and after work
Your thoughts, feelings
Other stuff as you like of course
9/
You might also want to include
- number of hours of PPE training you have had at each healthcare setting you work in
- whether or not the PPE training included using the masks that you now wear at work
- whether you and a Fit Test for the make you are wearing
10/
Your diary is not just for your work days - you can write in it every day- including days you may not have gone to work because it was your day off, you were unwell, you were in quarantine etc
11/
... spellcheck 🤦♀️
We will get to the other side of this
