This is yet another indication of the attempt by the Israeli government to weaken the Authority and further reduce its position, "said Hasan Awwad, a Palestinian policy expert.
Israeli political analyst and expert on the Israel-Palestinian crisis, Eli Nesan, disagrees. “The Palestinian side disapproves of everything that Israel does,” he saysing what is seen as an attempt to marginalize the Palestinian Authority,
the Coordinator of Government Activities in the Territories (COGAT), the Israeli Defense Ministry unit responsible for civilian affairs in the Palestinian territories, has announced it will accept requests for permits to enter and work in Israel,
through an application on smartphones, directly from Palestinians. While COGAT says the move is intended to benefit Palestinians, Ramallah officials view this new initiative with great skepticism,
accusing the Israeli government of attempting to undermine the PA and its Ministry of Civil Affairs, which is responsible for securing permits on behalf of Palestinians. Eli Nesan, an Israeli political analyst and Israeli-Palestinian dispute specialist, disagrees with that.
“The Palestinian side disapproves of everything that Israel does,” he says Nesan told The Media Line that claims of an Israeli policy to weaken the Authority are "baseless."
"On the contrary, Israel does not want to weaken the PA, and Israel is ready to continue security coordination between it and the Palestinians."
The Palestinian Authority ended security cooperation with Israel in May, opposing the attempts of the new government to annex portions of the West Bank. The PA has also frozen ties in civil matters. With the halt of security coordination,
many Palestinians from the West Bank and Gaza were unable to get medical treatment, work, or business permits in Israel, as the PA stopped applying for them on their behalf.
If the Palestinians don't like this, the question is, why has the Palestinian Authority cut off security coordination with Israel? (commentary).
PA President Mahmoud Abbas at the time cited the possibility of Israeli annexation as the reason for the security collaboration 's suspension. But since the UAE-Israel Agreement that threat no longer exists. The issue is Abu Mazen [Abbas] is living in the past, not the present,
not the future. Abbas' policy is not of service to the nation of Palestine. The Palestinian side still boycotts the US and continues to boycott Israel. That policy isn't going to serve them well.
If they really cared about their people they would enjoy better economic conditions today for the Palestinian people.
The PA faces the worst financial crisis in a long time, with revenue loss due to the COVID-19 pandemic, foreign assistance dramatically reduced, and the Authority's refusal to accept tax and tariff money that Israel collects on its behalf.
Israel has withheld some of the Palestinian tax revenue because of the monthly stipends that the PA pays to the Slain Palestinian families and prisoners in Israeli prisons who have assaulted and murdered Israelis.
The PA has no way to stop Palestinians from seeking permits and it desperately needs cash. Every day about 80,000 Palestinians cross over to Israel for jobs, taking with them desperately needed cash to spend on the Palestinian markets. Trumps' peace initiative,
Israel's normalization of ties with the United Arab Emirates, and the possibility that Arab states would join suit, create a gloomy image for the PA. The Palestinian Government is becoming steadily alone, silent and marginalized.
