BREAKING—Mexico 🇲🇽 President Andrés Manuel López Obrador (AMLO) has contracted #COVID19. He says he has mild symptoms thus far.

I’ve been warning for months Mexico has a serious uncontrolled epidemic. @HLGatell dismissed and says it was fine cuz hospitals weren’t full.
2) Rewind to June 21 2020, I was very worried and warning about Mexico’s 50% positivity that matched the high numbers of NY (state) & average 7 day positivity of Spain and Italy. Positivity reflects both limited testing and/or caseload—both worrisome. @MaxCRoser super worried too
3) Here is a good review of what happened after.
4) Meanwhile, According to Johns Hopkins University, Mexico has recorded at least 1,752,347 Covid-19 cases and 149,084 people have died from the virus in the country.
5) In hardest-hit Mexico City, nearly 30 public hospitals report they have reached 100% percent capacity, and many others are approaching that mark. The city's Mayor Claudia Sheinbaum has urged residents to not go out unless absolutely necessary.

6) In December, Mexico City and the state of Mexico were placed into "red level," the highest measure on the country's stoplight alert system for Covid-19 restrictions.

Lopez Obrador, who rarely wears a mask, has faced widespread criticism over his handling of the pandemic.
7) Mexico has one of the lowest testing rates of any major country around the world and tests are often expensive and difficult to come by.
7) Mexico #COVID19 deaths skyrocketing too. And this is despite poor testing of total COVID.

Data from @OurWorldInData ourworldindata.org/coronavirus/co…
8) Excess mortality in Mexico even higher. 275k last month, despite offices death toll just 110k from #COVID19. That was also before recent spike in cases and deaths. So likely even higher.

📍UNMASKED HIGH SCHOOL WRESTLING TOURNAMENT: CDC report on an unmasked wrestling tournament of 10 participating high schools from 3 counties—that became a super-spreader event & led to at least 79 infections and 1 death. Where? Florida naturally. #COVID19

2) Apparently it was an unmasked tournament because American Academy of Pediatrics deems masks a “choking hazard during wresting”. Oh FFS!!

And notice kids 0-13 had higher Attack rate than young adults and teens, % (no. positive/no. susceptible). Only elderly higher. #COVID19 Image
3) Now Florida also wants to host the Olympics if Tokyo backs out for safety reasons. I’m gonna recommend IOC votes “no” to Florida hosting it. thehill.com/homenews/news/…

BREAKING—Germany 🇩🇪 has now formally demanded that EU block all export of #COVID19 vaccines produced within the EU.
2) It is due to a huge slowdown in vaccine supplies and delivery backlog in EU. Many countries are now receiving just half or even 40% of doses they were promised. google.com/amp/s/www.bbc.…
3) EU is pissed... extremely pissed at AstraZeneca for reneging on contracts to delivery vaccines. This is EU’s health commissioner....

COVID REPLAPSE—New study finds the #SARSCoV2 may remain in people’s brains after infection and trigger relapses in patients who thought they had recovered. This could explain why patients who appear to be over #COVID19 sometimes relapse. 🧵
webmd.com/lung/news/2021… Image
2) “In the study, mice that were infected with the virus through their nasal passages developed severe illnesses due to brain infections, even after the virus left their lungs. In humans, this could explain why patients who appear to be over COVID-19 sometimes relapse and die.”
3) “The brain is one of the regions where virus likes to hide,” Mukesh Kumar, the lead study author and a researcher at Georgia State University, said in a statement.

Extreme white privilege—businessman & his wife charter private ✈️ to remote indigenous First Nation town in Yukon to sneak vaccines—allegedly lied to officials & represented themselves “in various ways” & claimed to be workers at a local motel. #COVID19 🤦🏻‍♂️

2) Husband and wife Rodney Baker, 55, and Ekaterina Baker, 32, were ticketed and charged in Whitehorse on Jan. 21, 2021.

So that’s the casino mogul’s wife—someone asked.
3) Streicker said they put the community at risk by breaking quarantine, disregarding declaration they signed on their arrival and travelling to the remote community. He also questioned the logic of their deception — wondering how they thought they would receive the second dose.

OMINOUS—Denmark CDC is becoming more right — contagious #B117 variant is continuing to solidify itself as 12.1% of sequenced #SARSCoV2 samples.

📌2.4%
📌4.0%
📌7.4%
📌12.1%

Most shocking — it’s doing this *despite* a sharp 🇩🇰 lockdown, which is crushing regular #COVID more. Image
2) there is basically a 70% increase in the relative % of #B117 per week for the last 4 weeks. That is an incredibly weekly increase.

Denmark is now sequencing every case. They are not fooling around. And as result, they found **3** S Africa 🇿🇦 #b1351 too this week! #COVID19 Image
3) My jaw dropped too. Denmark is now the **Only country** in the world to sequence every single cases they have each week. Only that way were they able to find the brand new arrival of the S Africa #B1351 variant 3 cases.

A related preprint says that tests have shown the drug is equally effective against #b117 variant too!
3) Aplidin, already approved in Australia for treating multiple myeloma, has been developed as a potential COVID-19 treatment by the Spanish drug company PharMar.

The drug was identified as a potential treatment after scientists at UCSF tried an unconventional approach...
