ECOLOGICAL REQUIREMENT

Soil– passion fruit plant thrives in deep well drained soils with a PH range of 6.0-7.0. The soil should also be rich in organic matter.

Altitude– the crop does well in an altitude range of between 1200-2000M ASL.
Rainfall– an annual rainfall of about 900-2000mm is suitable for an optimal production of this crop. Excess rainfall leads to poor fruit sett and also encourages diseases.

Temperature– for optimal production, a temperature range of between 18-28 degrees centigrade is sufficient.

🍐 🍐Pears can be grown in temperate zones, subtropics and even in the tropics; it all depends on the type of cultivar used and its adaptability. Pears do require adequate chilling effect for successful fruit bud development.
#Nhif #MaishaShereheFriday #MaishaConcertFriday ImageImage
For maximum fruit production the pear tree should be exposed to plenty of sunlight. A chilling requirement is also an important factor to be considered, a cold season is required to break dormancy. Lack of chilling delays leaf formation and leads to poor fruit set. Image
In Kenya, Limuru is a major pear growing zone due to the cold season that dominates the area. Different cultivars have different chilling requirements. Cultivars with low chilling effect are desired especially in the tropics Image

It ensures proper soil water balance especially during periods of less rainfall.
Drip irrigation delivers a controlled amount of water and nutrients straight to the roots of each plant, wasting nothing. This practice can save you up to 30% in water costs

male (staminate) – this has male parts and doesn’t produce fruits. Flowers are produced in large numbers in long dropping branches.
The female (pistillate) has female parts only. Flowers are large, situated singly or in clusters near the tree trunk and close to the base of stalk
It is pollinated through cross pollination and produces fruits that are sweetest in all the varieties.
The hermaphrodite- contains both male and female parts on the same plant thus capable of self-pollination.
