There was a Madras high court order on lake encroachment & judge said "whether it is 112 crores or 1K crores, we will destroy it. Get bulldozers ready"
But my lord, Madurai Bench of Madras High court was constructed in lake
Old Satellite image attached 1/n
And may be we'll get justice from the lower district court in Madurai. But that is also built on a lake
May be we should go even lower to the law college... But law college is also on a lake
A frustrated you might go to Madurai Corporation office.. Guess what that is also on a lake!
You might worry about water supply of Madurai now..
But dont be!
Tamil Nadu Water Supply and Drainage Board (TWAD) is experimenting by building on lake 😄Fellow encroachers include Tamil Nadu State Transport Corp, Forest Department. They are just researching something on the lake
Central Govt institutions do their part : schools , All India Radio Station EPFO too on lake..
Before someone blames this on a particular political party or an ideology or a state, do know that this is a nationwide problem.
Here are satellite images from Ahmedabad that got destroyed post 2002!
Another lost waterbody in Ahmedabad!
The problem is an institutional one. I understand and appreciate the lordship's concern over waterbodies but the order is not going to be fruitful - infact it can become detrimental. The leading narrative behind lake destruction is that the lake has lost it's function..
Now if the district collectors post satellite images of lakes during the dry season, the govt will only find justifications for further encroachment. Instead the court should have directed the govt to work with experts to bring up a road map for protecting the waterbodies
Will the high court send bulldozers and raze part of the Madurai high court and district court complexes? Just wondering
Metro stations, Bus Stands, College, Schools, Government buildings, Quarters, Low income housing, Bus Depots, Railway Stations, Railway lines, Highways, Garbage dumps owned by government etc etc..
Is bulldozer the solution? or do we need a long term plan and process?

A Kutty (Short) Story with Satellite Images about a hamlet near Tirunelveli, #TamilNadu
In 2003, the hamlet can be seen (marked in orange). It is next to Tirunelveli - Madurai railway line. There's a crossing (marked in black) through which people went to the nearby main road
Around 2018, Railways decided to build an underpass for this village so that they can double track this corridor. Concrete boxes can be seen in the image
And they started constructing the underpass by digging as seen in this satellite image
This man who is part of a national media network has published a wrong map of India as per Indian law. It shows parts of Ladakh which were ceded by Pakistan to China and around Siachen as "not part" of India.
#Thread: Map preparation is an easy job but meaningfull interpretation of spatial data & analysis behind maps is NOT. It requires good understanding of data & their representation of ground reality
Snapshot of misleading/fake correlation that has been circulating
1/n
The fake/misleading correlation implies that the missing people data locations in US correlates with location of Caves in US (indicating that they went missing in caves)
Map in top claims to be missing people location
Bottom Map is cave location
Discussing why its not real
2/n
The original version of the map (in top) is not representing all missing people in US but infact a rough representation of people gone missing in National parks, remote areas alone (where caves are there anyway) i.e no data from cities or other rural places
