“Internal research showed that swing voters soon tired of the Higgins story....After a few days, it morphed into frustration that Higgins had yet to go to the police.”
Was any “internal research” conducted into why rape victims don’t go to the police? What action have the police actually taken in relation to Higgins? Has the man been interviewed or charged? Is he even still in Australia? The public are currently in the dark on these questions.
He continues:
“Josh Frydenberg...was drowned out by the rape scandal [on Wednesday] when the TV stations cut away to Australian of the Year and sexual abuse survivor Grace Tame at the National Press Club. She was the warm-up act to Porter’s press conference a few hours later.”
Framing Grace Tame as “drowning out” one powerful man and a “warm-up” act for another powerful man (accused of rape) is extraordinarily and deliberately insulting. In the circumstances the decision of the @FinancialReview to publish these statements is completely intolerable.
But he continues:
“The government accepts it has had three bad weeks...in an otherwise good 12 months.”
Really? Bushfire response, sports rorts, hidden political donations, aged care, quarantine, community safety programmes, Leppington triangle, secret trials, gas-led recovery..
“Those appalled by the Porter allegations and who have already judged him guilty “don’t like us anyway”. “Morrison is “losing skin with tertiary-educated women but he never had much skin with them anyway”.
Articles like this will certainly not persuade such women and men that their futures or the futures of their children are in safe hands under the “leadership” of Scott Morrison and the highly questionable judgment of his cabinet ministers.
In case Phil hasn’t noticed, women have had enough of being sidelined, overlooked, ignored and framed as “drowning out” or “warming up for” men. #EnoughIsEnough#auspol
Women are experiencing a profound watershed moment fueled by white hot anger sparked by sexual assault allegations and incompetent government responses. Women are mobilising their communities to elect people who will represent them instead of belittling them. #IndependentsDay
Representatives who will listen to their communities instead of male-dominated self-satisfied echo chambers in Canberra. Who will take victims of sexual assault seriously, ensure they are heard and that the criminal justice framework for rape and assault victims delivers justice.
The several male journalists (and the media companies behind them) attempting to shift the narrative away from the appalling behaviour of men in Canberra are showing themselves to be part of the problem. Not listening. Not reflecting. Not learning.
Whether they know it or not, they are participating in #rapeculture with all its horrifying hypocrisy writ large for the whole world to see. Powerful men belittling, ignoring, undermining women speaking out against misogyny, sexism and violence.
They continue to berate women and defend their positions behind this insidious, subconscious mantra: “Protect men at all costs!!”.
AFR view: “The Heydon case was one of inappropriate and unacceptable workplace behaviour. In the case of Mr Porter it is alleged criminality that is at stake. And for that there is only one place: the criminal justice system and the court of law.”
#Accountability for conduct is not limited to the criminal jurisdiction “An inquiry may be able to interview other persons that were present. Mr Porter mentioned there were four of them [on the debating team] and that they may have gone out together that evening.”
“He holds the apex position for the legal profession and his conduct – and integrity – must be beyond approach.
“An independent inquiry would be able to look into whether or not he is a fit and proper person to hold the position of Attorney-General in the Cabinet”
This is really quite bizarre... Christian Porter says he was not given opportunity to respond to allegations before they were published (anonymously) by the ABC. But also he would not have read them anyway as it would have been “inappropriate”?? #auspoltheguardian.com/australia-news…
Christian Porter: “No journalist has put the detail of the allegations to me in a way that would allow seeking a response, not ever.” What does this statement even mean? It does not make sense. #auspol
He said the same thing before Canberra Bubble episode. But @Milliganreports says: “We gave those ministers...two-and-a-half weeks’ notice of the story and … they didn’t answer any of our questions,” #auspol
