"We now know that 6 of those victims were Asian women.
While we’re relieved the suspect was quickly apprehended, we’re certainly not at peace as this attack still points to an escalating threat many in the Asian American community feel today.
“While authorities are still investigating the motive in these attacks & whether or not they were anti-Asian in nature, we already know that too many within the AAPI community fear every day for themselves & their loved ones as a result of the spate of attacks over the past year.
“We all must call on elected officials to take steps to counter anti-Asian hate and other extremist or hateful ideology.
And law enforcement at every level – along with social media companies – must work together to help intercept and combat this growing threat.
“The SPLC will continue to monitor these cases & work with partners to stand against these senseless attacks.
We encourage people looking for resources on how to prevent & report a hate crime to visit our website.”
🚨NOW: Chief of Staff Lecia Brooks is testifying before @FSCDems on how domestic terrorists — like the right-wing extremists who overran Capitol Hill on Jan. 6 — finance their operations & how to cut off money sources to prevent future attacks.
Tune in 👇
Since 1990, we've published an annual census of hate groups operating within the U.S. The number is a barometer, albeit only one, of the level of hate activity in the country.
Our #YearInHate2020 report mentioned by Lecia documented a decline in the number of hate groups, but not a decline in the strength/momentum of their movement.
As the Jan. 6 Capitol Hill siege affirmed, their threat to our democracy has not diminished.splcenter.org/year-hate-and-…
VICTORY! A federal court has ruled that Secretary of Education Betsy DeVos and the U.S. Department of Education cannot divert desperately needed money away from public schools and into private schools!
This is a huge win for public education and sends a clear message that Secretary DeVos cannot use illegal means to advance her agenda of funneling scarce public resources to private education
The lawsuit was led by @NAACP, public school parents and school districts across the country and aimed to protect critical COVID-19 aid for public schools & their students
Exclusive: Ryan Balch, who says he marched with Kyle Rittenhouse and a contingent of militia conducting armed patrols in Kenosha, WI, promoted far-right, Nazi and white supremacist rhetoric on his social media, including a video featuring Hitler, a @Hatewatch investigation found.
Balch, 31, has not been accused of a crime or been linked to the shooting by law enforcement. He volunteered info about this acquaintance with Rittenhouse on his Facebook page.
But @Hatewatch tied Balch to a Twitter account that indicates he was immersed in white supremacy propaganda. At the time he was patrolling the streets of Kenosha with a firearm, Balch was featuring an image promoting the “boogaloo” movement as his Facebook cover image.
This resolution is an attack on our definition of hate groups in order to excuse the Trump administration's history of working with those who malign entire groups of people — including #BlackLivesMatter, #immigrants, #Muslims and the #LGBTQ community — with dehumanizing rhetoric.
Since @RealDonaldTrump first ran for president, he welcomed the support of anti-LGBTQ, anti-Muslim and anti-immigrant groups, like the Family Research Council and the Federation for American Immigration Reform.
🚨#BREAKING: We just filed a notice of appeal on behalf of a 14 y/o #GA student who was permanently expelled after being accused of an off-campus misdemeanor that was later dismissed.
@GwinnettSchools🗣️harsh disciplinary tactics push students of color out of the classroom.
It’s no coincidence the County’s disciplinary hearing building is directly across from the county jail. splcenter.org/presscenter/sp…
Community led org @GwinnettSToPP has been doing the legwork to dismantle the school to prison pipeline and end exclusionary discipline in Gwinnett for over 10 years.
Problems they saw back then are continuing still today – it’s time to end this racist practice now.
