Thanks to the @CEPIvaccines@WHO@EuWHOEurope#Covax and others, 24,000 doses of #AstraZeneca vaccines arrived in ๐ฒ๐ช last week, and this is just fantastic! But as in other European countries, there is a lot of hesitancy and fear related to this vaccine. ๐๐ป (๐งต)
The ministry of health @MinZdravlja made the #AstraZeneca vaccine available to all 65+ old citizens, and this is great news as they are the most vulnerable group that was not eligible for @sputnikvaccine and #Sinopharm vaccines given in previous weeks to people 70+ ๐๐ป
The main fear from what I understand is related to the inconsistent recommendations about the appropriate target groups and recent reports of #thrombotic events recorded in several EU countries now. Letโs address the issues one by one ๐๐ป
The #AstraZeneca vaccine was first recommended to younger people because the data on the efficacy in older wasnโt available. But the results came in so the countries already using the vaccine increased the upper age and started vaccinating all eligible adults ๐๐ป
Then sporadic reports of #thrombosis started appearing (this was about a month ago) but now we know that the vast majority of those events - even though โ๏ธnot โ๏ธ proven to be linked to the vaccine - occurr in younger people <60 y.e.
Look at these tables๐๐ป
This is why most European countries then moved the eligibility for #AstraZeneca vaccine to 55+ or even older. In ๐ฒ๐ช this is 65+ and this is being extremely cautious, which is commendable ๐๐ป
We now have more data than a month ago thanks to the EMAโs Pharmacovigilance Risk Assessment Committee (PRAC) and the trend seems to be the same - vast majority of the rare thrombotic events occurred in younger recipients, and mostly women. So all is good for older recipients ๐๐ป
These are extremely #rare events and we donโt even know if they are caused by the vaccine. ๐๐ป
This is why #WHO and @EMA_News still recommend the vaccine because the chances of dying from #COVID19 and for that matter being run over by a car in ๐ฒ๐ช are much, much higher.
Keep in mind that every anesthesia even when you go to dentist carries a risk of a thrombotic event ๐๐ป
But we still decide to have it just not to be in pain for a short period of time โฆ
It is normal that everybody is a bit confused and concerned, but we must be rational and do what is the best, which is
If you are over 65 and living in ๐ฒ๐ช please go and get vaccinated ASAP๐๐ป
I was asked and yes had I been offered the vaccine I would take it.
I hope that more data in the following weeks and understanding if there is any link between the #AZ vaccine and #thrombosis will persuade younger people to get the vaccine and protect themselves and others ๐๐ป
Remember - the #AstraZeneca vaccine has 100% efficacy in preventing #severe form of #Covid19, which means you will not end up hospitalized.
And it is effective against the B.1.1.7 the so called #British variant (even though I donโt like the country names)๐๐ป
For the end and I will tweet about this later - there have been false reports reported by news in ๐ฒ๐ช and given by dr Boljevic than #astrazenecavaccine is proven to caused thrombosis. This is simply not true. More later ๐๐ป
Dragi gradjani Crne Gore - ako ste stariji od 65 godina, nije vaลพno jeste li imali covid ili ne - molim vas - vakciniลกite se ลกto prije to bolje. #AstraZeneca vakcina ฤe zaลกtititi vas i vaลกe bliznje. Takodje ฤlanovi @VladaCG 65 godine i viลกe - dajte dobar primjer i ohrabrite druge
The end of this long thread. Take care and get vaccinated.
Following some hoopla that my tweet ๐๐ป causedโฆ
1. I want to applaud all the medical workers in #Montenegro - epidemiologists, support staff, technicians, nurses, doctors - who are at the front line, caring for the many sick people in the hospitals around the country (๐งต1/10)
I want to make sure that what Iโll say is #not meant to indicate that the #services you provide in ๐ฒ๐ช are not good - I know that you are doing your very best, and I thank you from the bottom of my heart (2/10)
*reminder: health services is not a synonym for health system
My comment that it doesnโt make sense to use #CFR (or as was referred to โlethalityโ) for comparisons between countries, and as a mirror of the quality of health system quality is based on the following facts (3/10)
The main findings are discussed in the ๐งต that follows (1/n)
KSHV and its cousin EBV use an envelope glycoprotein complex called gH/gL to bind to #EphA2 receptor tyrosine kinase to gain access to host cells. We set to determine the structure of the KSHV gH/gL-EphA2 complex and perform functional studies to understand the mechanism (2/n)
While we were gathering the functional data Su et al. published the 3.2 A structure and provided some interesting insights few months ago.
But under our 'no scoop good enough' mantra we kept working and obtained some cool data that we can now share (3/n)
Seemingly good news are coming from ๐ฒ๐ช and this makes me happy, but I implore @VladaCG not to give false idea of security to its citizens. The number of detected cases dropped by 50% as their graph shows, but that is largely due to the โฌ๏ธ numbers of tested performed daily. (1/4)
If you look at the incidence rate, it shows a very small decrease that cannot be reliably attributed to 'a better situation' in #Montenegro (2/4)
Don't be fooled that the situation will get better until most people are vaccinated. The B.1.1.7 (UK) strain that is wracking havoc around Europe now is growing in Montenegro too, it's just that we don't know which % it is at now because of the lack of sequencing (3/4)
