Let this sink in—wealthy sports franchise, NHL @Canucks:

—Had >50% of its team #COVID19 sickened

—Many decimated “very ill”

—Despite strict workplace protocols

—Despite big PPE budget

—Despite daily testing

➡️The #P1 variant is just that badass.🧵

2) The @NHL Vancouver @Canucks is looking out of service for a while until they get this #P1 under control. But they may have to revamp everything.

See detailed thread 🧵 below ⬇️
3) And no, most Canadian players are not vaccinated yet due to shortage in Canada 🇨🇦

Here is the NHL letter to all teams today because of the outbreak.
4) And damnit, did we know hockey 🏒 rinks are dangerous for airborne coronavirus?

Damnit yes we did! The ice creates a thermal inversion! We knew this.
5) And where did the Vancouver @Canucks likely contract it? The community of course!!! Huge proliferation of #P1 in BC 🇨🇦
6) Update — some players now on IV treatment. "Fatigue, dehydration, the symptoms are intense," one agent of a Canucks player told ESPN. "It's knocked a lot of guys out. Some can't even get out of bed." espn.com/nhl/story/_/id…

Whoa—New study found active #SARSCoV2 in the intestines of children for up to 36 days—70% of infected children carried the active virus without showing any symptoms, giving worry to “invisible transmitters”. Of 22 cases, 20 were children under age of 6. 🧵

2) Stool samples from a two-year-old who returned from overseas still tested positive after 36 days.

CUHK collected 17.5k stool samples and successfully detected 22 confirmed cases, of which 20 were children under the age of 6.
3) “After the child recovers, even if he has antibodies & the respiratory tract samples are negative, the intestinal tract can continue to carry the active virus for a long time, and the stool is positive for the virus, which may pose a risk of transmission.”

WOW—first bilateral pandemic BUBBLE between 2 countries!

New Zealand 🇳🇿 & Australia 🇦🇺 can form a quarantine-free bubble because they both adopted a #ZeroCovid strategy.

Don’t say “but but—islands”. Vietnam 🇻🇳 is not an island, yet has zero #COVID19 too. Leadership matters! 🧵
3) If you elect competent leaders who doesn’t try to rip a country apart (cough, Brexit, cough), but instead led with compassion... you can rock zero Covid too.

Variants exploding across Canada 🇨🇦 in just 5 days—let these sink in:

#P1 has doubled to 737 between March 30 to April 5th in BC.

#P1 has tripled in Alberta.

#B117 has ~doubled in Saskatchewan.

#B117 has soared 73% in Alberta.

🇨🇦’s hockey is now in pandemic danger. #COVID19 ImageImage
2) More than half the Vancouver @Canucks have been infected. Many bedridden. Reports some on IV fluids. These are HEALTHY YOUNG PROFESSIONAL ATHLETES! #P1 is just that serious.
3) Keep in mind that an NHL team like the @Canucks have strict safety protocols and almost unlimited PPE and testing budget. And yet a major outbreak still occurred.

📍AIRBORNE RESTAURANT TRANSMISSION—3 families—“No close contact or fomite contact identified, aside from back-to-back sitting—Airflow dynamics indicates the infection distribution is consistent with a spread of **long-range transmission of exhaled virus-laden aerosols**”. 🧵
2) It was clearly aerosol airborne transmission— “No sharing of items (e.g., a kettle) was observed between the three tables and no conversations occurred between the three families.”

sciencedirect.com/science/articl… Image
3) here was the air pattern—“The infection risk was also higher for patrons at zone-ABC tables (red) than those at non-ABC zone tables (χ2 = 25.78, P < 0.001). None of the patrons seated in the non-ABC zone were infected.” Image

Gosh—Over 122,000 🇬🇧 NHS personnel have #LongCovid, out of 1.1 million people in the UK were affected by the condition. What’s the #2 occupational group? 114,000 teachers. Many are unable to work full time because of Long #COVID19 illness & brain fog. 🧵
theguardian.com/society/2021/a… Image
2) “Patient care is being hit because many of those struggling with long Covid are only able to work part-time, are too unwell to perform their usual duties, or often need time off because they are in pain, exhausted or have “brain fog”.
3) “Ongoing illness can have a devastating impact on individual doctors, both physically and by leaving them unable to work—it puts a huge strain on the health service, which was already vastly understaffed before the pandemic,” said Dr Helena McKeown of British Med Assoc

“Boomers Are Vaccinated and Down to party” is a headline that gives me slight nervousness. The CDC didn’t say visiting all bars/taverns is okay, but people are now doing that—is everyone in a bar or tavern vaccinated & masking & distanced? Doubtful. 🧵

Pray no outbreak. #COVID19 Image
2) To be clear, the latest CDC guidelines say fully vaccinated people can be indoors without masks with someone unvaccinated only in a **SINGLE HOUSEHOLD** in which everyone else is low risk. Thus not house parties or bars/taverns!!! cdc.gov/coronavirus/20… Image
3) the other concern is not just whether if the vaccinated get sick (low likelihood), but rather if they carry the virus asymptomatically and transmit it to someone unvaccinated. For the evidence for this... see this thread 🧵

Let’s be safe not sorry.
