🏒New—25 hockey players and staff of NHL Vancouver @Canucks team are now confirmed positive for #COVID19. All cases traced to a single source, which is an variant awaiting formal confirmation which type (previously #P1 mentioned by multiple reporters). 🧵 nhl.com/canucks/news/c…
2) “An ongoing investigation by Vancouver Coastal Health and club contact tracing staff attributes the source infection to a single individual obtained in a community setting, which has since been identified by public health as a public exposure location.
3) “The Canucks are grateful for the continued support of local public health officials, the NHL and NHLPA and encourage everyone to help prevent the spread of COVID-19 by following health orders. COVID-19 infections are rising in BC.
4) “This is a stark reminder of how quickly the virus can spread and its serious impact, even among healthy, young athletes.” ⚠️
5) Let’s put this @Canucks outbreak in perspective just how contagious #SARSCoV2 is....
6) Previously it was reported by multiple media outlets (see above and below) that it was the #P1 variant from Brazil 🇧🇷. Many players were very ill on IV fluids.
7) There was already a raging outbreak of #P1 well before last week in British Columbia 🇨🇦
8) I tried to warn 2 weeks ago about Brazil 🇧🇷 and Latin America #P1 crisis and how BC was a new epicenter.
9) On March 22nd, BC health authorities already knew 84 cases of #P1 and none were international travel related — hence domestic community spread.
10) Thus, regardless if the Canucks hockey outbreak is P1 or not, we should have acted sooner. Yet its frustrating BC health chief kept dismissing variants as not different than older strains, which is clearly false. @CDCofBC 🇨🇦 needs to wake up.

11) thus, if you are Canadian—Please sign & share:

Call to action for all provinces & territories to adopt an explicit goal of #COVID19 elimination & implement effective, financially supported restrictions across #Canada

#ZeroCovid @zerocovidcanada zerocovidcanada.org/take-action
12) Earlier today, CDC did issue new advisory language on travel to Canada 🇨🇦 about variants in Canada.

➡️ Notably, CDC is very worried about new variants and warns “even fully vaccinated may be at risk”. #COVID19

(note: It’s been Level 4 since last fall, but variants is new).
13) Finally, let these sobering stats from yesterday sink in. Canada is in trouble without more vaccines.
14) BC 🇨🇦 must act or else it might endanger the country or continent.
15) p.s. hockey is a risky sport during Covid because of thermal inversions over the ice rink that keeps the aerosols trapped over the ice instead of dissipating
16) Many other hockey related #COVID19 outbreaks.

“yippee!!!” ~the disgusting email Trump advisor wrote to Trump’s Asst Health Secretary after pressuring and forcing CDC leaders to muzzle the opening sentence of a report about spread of #COVID19 among younger people & blunt data unfavorable to Trump. 🧵 washingtonpost.com/health/2021/04… Image
2) “Trump appointees in the Department of Health and Human Services last year privately touted their efforts to block or alter scientists’ reports on the coronavirus to more closely align with then-President Donald Trump’s more optimistic messages about the outbreak”
3) “Even as career government scientists worked to combat the virus, a cadre of Trump appointees was attempting to blunt the scientists’ messages, edit their findings and equip the president with an alternate set of talking points.

2) The plans is: “Pending regulatory decision, our hope is to make this vaccine available to the 12-15-year-old age group **before the start of the 2021 school year**.”
3) “BNT162b2 was well tolerated with side effects generally consistent with those observed in participants 16 to 25 years of age. All participants in the trial will continue to be monitored for long-term protection
and safety for an additional two years after their second dose.”

Being vaccinated does NOT mean that you can have a relationship w/ an underage girl & pay her to “travel” w/ you as a Congressman—then show off nude photos to colleagues while sitting on the floor of the US House of Representatives.

Sharing again because important—vaccines in pregnant women are safe & maybe protect the baby. Also, antibody levels in response to vaccine>>infection. Thus, “even if you've had #COVID19, getting the vaccine will lead to a more robust antibody response”. 🙏 npr.org/sections/healt…
2) The 131 participants had been vaccinated with either the Pfizer or Moderna vaccine; 84 were pregnant, 31 were lactating, and 16 were nonpregnant 18- to 45-year-old women. The study involved patients and
3) Blood samples were collected at the time of the first and second dose of vaccine, and again after six weeks.
"The levels of antibodies, which is what we're looking for in response to vaccination, were similar between the groups," Gray says.

⚠️Over 1 in 7, or 1.1 million people now suffer #LongCovid in the U.K. 🇬🇧

📌~14% who got #COVID19 in UK study suffer persistent symptoms at 12 weeks.

📌29% of all #LongCovid are under age <35

📌Top 2 occupations: healthcare workers & teachers.🧵

statista.com/chart/amp/2456… ImageImage
2) Frontline healthcare workers are among the largest group affected. Teachers are the next largest group.
3) To be clear, although 4.3 mil UK residents have confirmed #COVID19, & 1.1 mil have #LongCovid symptoms, it’s not 25% because the 1.1 mil were picked up via a survey captureing asymptomatic cases, hence 14%. That said, #LongCovid in symptomatic cases is likely higher than 14%. Image

New 50% efficacy study of Brazil-predominant vaccine CoronaVac (by Sinovac) in Manaus 🇧🇷 among healthcare workers when #P1 ~75% dominant. Not a trial, but the study found a 1st dose >=14-days efficacy of 50% on symptomatic #COVID19, ~32% if +asymptomatic. medrxiv.org/content/10.110…
2) Sorry I meant ~35% if asymptomatic included with the symptomatics. But it’s not significant. Wide CIs.
3) Sinovac’s CoronaVac efficacy is all over the board. It was 50% for 2 dose efficacy in a Brazil trial, but it had 91% efficacy in early Turkey trial, and 65% in an Indonesia trial.
