1) Why #China's bid to woo the world with vaccines is backfiring

Strange surge of Covid in Chile, reports of a single dose being only 3% effective and supply failures.

Vaccine diplomacy, the Health Silk Road, is a key part of the #CCP's propaganda drive.
dailymail.co.uk/news/article-9…
2) Singapore's supplies have been sitting in storage since February. Several countries, including Poland, South Korea and Vietnam, rejected the vaccine offer due to the lack of reliable data about efficacy or trials.

The pro-China president of the Philippines declined his shot.
3) Chile used a Chinese vaccine in one of the world's fastest vaccination drives, but then saw a strange surge in Covid cases. In the UAE, some recipients had to be given a third injection after two were found to deliver insufficient immunity.
4) Chile has vaccinated more than four in ten citizens, not far behind British and Israeli rates – yet its confirmed fatality rate from Covid is 16 times higher than the UK, with ten times more cases.
5) 'Unless Chinese firms can improve standards and provide data to show consistent effectiveness, their vaccines are likely to be used only by desperate countries where any vaccine may be attractive, particularly if provided for free,' said Prof Petrovsky.

A wider war coming to #Myanmar

Unclaimed rocket attacks on military airbases signal a possible spread of the long-running, low-intensity civil civil war from remote ethnic frontier areas to urban centers.
asiatimes.com/2021/05/a-wide…
2) No group has yet claimed responsibility for several, almost simultaneous rocket attacks on military targets in central Myanmar, including air bases recently used to target ethnic armed groups in the nation’s frontier areas.
3) The shadowy attacks are likely the work of an alliance between ethnic rebels and urban-based pro-democracy dissidents, with the former providing the explosives and the latter knowledge of local conditions in the Myanmar heartland.

#China targeting #India? Import costs of paracetamol, antibiotics ingredients see 100% jump

Hiking prices could be #Chinese response to the Modi government’s Incentive scheme, which seeks to achieve self-dependence in pharma ingredients.
theprint.in/health/china-t…
2) The prices of raw materials, known as active pharmaceutical ingredients (APIs) or bulk drugs, have grown multifold since November. The same trend was seen in April last year, when several Chinese units and trade corridors shut down due to the Covid outbreak.
3) As India seeks self-dependence in API production, experts believe China, the largest API manufacturer, is responding with price fluctuation.

The prices of one of the simplest and commonly used salts, paracetamol, have jumped by over 100 per cent since November.

#Japan on the pointed horns of a #China dilemma

Japan Inc has shown no signs of decoupling from China's markets despite clear and rising military threats

Japanese economic health is deeply dependent on the same country that threatens Japan’s security.
asiatimes.com/2021/04/japan-…
2) Two core components of China’s grand strategy under Xi Jinping are visible in PRC policy toward Japan. The first is applying military pressure to compel foreign governments to submit to Beijing’s will on questions of disputed territory.
3) For Beijing, trade and investment are dual-use tools that can pay off for China both economically and politically. When a foreign country’s economy becomes reliant on Chinese markets and capital, Beijing routinely attempts to exploit that reliance.
