I don't know if the elections in #Syria were democratic by western standards, probably not. Bashar won. But I can't see anyone besides him and his party who can better lead Syria in these troubled times. It is either this + western sanctions, or total surrender to western diktat.
Name one Syrian opposition figure who can lead Syria now?
These people fought Assad for ten years, they brought foreign armies and multiple jihadist insurgencies to unseat Assad and they still haven’t got a viable realistic option to lead Syria.
Syria is reeling under sanctions and it hasn’t taken back all lost territory, it is dealing with multiple crises and has to meet tough challenges ahead, but the state is intact. This is what Syrians voted for.
Note on this thread: what I meant by western Diktat is the breakup of the country, chaos, and foreign military fighting an unending war with jihadists. The pattern is the same everywhere, from Afghanistan to Iraq, Libya, #Syria and now the Sahel, and the African continent...
