Deeply disturbing dvlpment coming from the far-right Austrian govt, as it releases a new "Islam map" showing the location of #mosques & associations around the country.

This is dangerous lvls of govt surveillance & marks the population as a threat

The map was compiled in collaboration w/ the Uni of Vienna & Documentation Centre of Political Islam, a monitoring centre established by the ruling party.

The DCPI fails to define "political Islam," using it as a catchall term to target Austrian Muslims

When the govt announced the creation of this documentation center, Integration Minister Raab claimed that #Muslim associations should be investigated because many have something to hide, & that their social media profiles should be monitored.
Mouhanad Khorchide, professor at the University of Münster, heads the advisory board of the center.
At its opening, he amplified anti-Muslim tropes by stating the proponents of political Islam would engage in taqiyya, thus turning all Muslims into suspects

Lorenzo Vidino, director of @gwupoe, also spoke at the launch of the center, calling it a “pioneer in Europe.”

Vidino's research promotes conspiracy theories about the Muslim Brotherhood in Europe and the United States.

The problem with the vague term “political Islam” in countries such as #Austria is that the government uses it to criminalise Muslim practices and to silence Muslims who express political opinions critical of the government.

The #COVID19 pandemic exacerbated Islamophobia around the globe. From #India to the U.K., #Muslims were accused of spreading the virus & evading lockdown orders.
For #Muslims, the environment meant not only being disproportionately impacted by a deadly virus but also facing targeted discrimination from those in power:

A yr ago today, I watched in real-time an attack unfold before my eyes. On a Jummah in March last yr, a white supremacist attacked two #mosques in #Christchurch killing 51 Muslim worshippers as they prayed. Pls take a moment to pray for the victims & their families today.

A group of 4 men just tried to break into my house w/ a sledgehammer. It’s been almost 2 hrs since I called @metpoliceuk & not a single police officer has arrived. Do cops no longer care? Where are our taxes going? Where’s the accountability? No wonder criminals are running wild.
Maybe if y’all retweet this enough, the @metpoliceuk will give a damn. I have heard others in the area who’ve been targeted in recent days. With the police virtually missing, I’m not surprised these criminals have zero fear.
@MPIainDS I’m within your constituency. What are you going to do to make us feel safe? It’s now been over two hours since the incident and still no person of authority has arrived at our home. @metpoliceuk
