#COVID19 affects many segments of our body, including our #ImmuneSystem: Dr. Rajeev Jayadevan

Many people in our country have #diabetes, given this and our population, the no. of people who fall sick is higher than in any other country, so it is understandable that some of them will catch #mucormycosis

: Dr. Rajeev Jayadevan

The way I see it, a tiny proportion of the large number of people getting infected with COVID-19 are getting infected with mucormycosis, so this proportion becomes a large number: Dr. Rajeev Jayadevan

For #diabetic patients, when the blood glucose of sugars cannot be controlled, the immune system is not able to work properly. In case of severe diabetes, the function of pathogen-fighting cells like neutrophils gets impaired: Dr. Rajeev Jayadevan

Factors such as this make us prone to contracting mucormycosis: Dr. Rajeev Jayadevan

@ddsahyadrinews @airnews_mumbai

@MoHFW_INDIA @MahaHealthIEC @COVIDNewsByMIB

High sugar level in itself is conducive to fungal growth, fungus loves sugar, it loves trace metals like zinc, it also grows on dead tissue (until the body repairs the dead tissue, fungus may grow on it): Dr. Rajeev Jayadevan

in Webinar on '#Mucormycosis, #Dental #Health'
The #fungus invades our blood cells, our tissues don't get oxygen supply and die, and when the tissues die, they become black in colour - this is the reason why the name black fungus is used for #mucormycosis, explains Dr Rajeev Jayadevan

There is definitely a link between good #dental health and #COVID19 infection; when teeth, gums and palette are maintained well, naturally present microorganisms will function well and viral infection is less likely to occur: Dr. Neeta

#OralHealth #Mucormycosis Image
If wound after #tooth extraction is not maintained well, if good oral hygiene is not observed, then we increase chances of catching #mucormycosis: Dr Neeta

If you get #COVID19 after #vaccination, it will be mild in vast majority of cases. No medicines necessary in mild cases of COVID. Hence, chance of catching steroid-related mucormycosis will be low
- Dr. @RajeevJayadevan in reply to a viewer's query
LIVE at Image
But if instead of letting the mild COVID case curing itself, if the person starts self-medication, taking medicines which are not required, it may set the stage for a fungal infection that would have never happened in the first place: Dr. @RajeevJayadevan

Vast majority of people in our country engage in some form of self-treatment, I strongly discourage this, just follow the basic instructions given by the doctor you are in touch with and stay away from unnecessary medicines
: Dr. @RajeevJayadevan

The cases of #mucormycosis we are witnessing are a tiny tiny fraction of #COVID19 cases: Dr. @RajeevJayadevan

@ICMRDELHI @MoHFW_INDIA @WHOSEARO @IndianMedAssn @DDNewslive @airnewsalerts
Effects of immuno-suppression and #COVID19 treatment will remain in body for some time, just like we see ripples in a river, long after a boat goes through it. So, be vigilant for a few wks after recovering, don't do anything adventurous/experimental with your body: Dr. Jayadevan Image
So many studies have conclusively shown that good healthy bacteria living in our body improve our body's defence against invading bad bacteria; so, prolonged and unnecessary use of antibiotics is a strong risk factor for fungal and bacterial infections: Dr. @RajeevJayadevan Image
Besides brushing of teeth, flossing, mouth-washing and rinsing will also help in maintaining good dental health: Dr. Neeta

#OralHealth #Mucormycosis Image
Fungus is there all around us, don't be excessively scared of venturing out due to fear of catching fungal infection, fungi have existed for centuries, and #mucormycosis is a rare infection, occurring in very few cases: Dr. Neeta

@COVIDNewsByMIB @MoHFW_INDIA @ICMRDELHI
Be in touch with your dental doctor, teleconsultation will help in many cases; if guidelines are followed at dental clinics, there shouldn't be reason for fear of catching infection, but don't be overzealous too, follow doctor's advice about physical visit: Dr. Neeta
#oralhealth
This advice has been given by Dr. Rajeev Jayadevan, and not Dr. Neeta

The error is sincerely regretted.

#Mucormycosis cases have been seen in people with decreased immunity (predominantly either due to diabetes or after some organ transplant); in the last month or two, we have seen a rise in mucormycosis in those without these conditions, it's a new development: Dr @RajeevJayadevan
Studies are ongoing to examine this; however, based on biological plausibility and circumstantial evidence, excessive use of #antibiotics, over-dosage and #SelfMedication with steroids, burning inside with steam are risk factors: Dr. @RajeevJayadevan

But we need studies need to confirm reasons for increased cases in those without traditional risk factors: Dr. @RajeevJayadevan

@COVIDNewsByMIB @WHO @ICMRDELHI @MoHFW_INDIA

When we encounter repeat infection or infection after
#vaccination, memory cells introduced in previous infection will swing into action immediately. Studies show that memory cells last at least an year, on how long vaccines can provide #immunity against #COVID19: Dr. Jayadevan
What #vaccines do predominantly is to prevent severe disease or death on getting infected; a good no. of scientists believe that immunity from vaccination is reasonably long-lasting, likely to protect us for many years: @RajeevJayadevan

@COVIDNewsByMIB @ICMRDELHI @MoHFW_INDIA
If you are exposed to #COVID19, never take it lightly. There is no need to panic. But, after 5-6 days, if your symptoms are worsening, if you are getting tired, short of breath, unable to eat, chest pain or simply not feeling well, then see a doctor: Dr. @RajeevJayadevan
Problem with inhaling steam is it doesn't come in correct dose!

Inhaling mild steam if you have cold may give some relief; but steam doesn't kill viruses and excessive steam may burn your tissues inside

- Dr. @RajeevJayadevan about excessive use of steam

#Unite2FightCorona
Your body has the ability to take care of itself; don't resort to home remedies since there is no need of it in the first place

Let's not damage our body's capacity to fight infections (by relying on self medication/home remedies)

- Dr. @RajeevJayadevan

#Unite2FightCorona
Treatment does not mean swallowing a bunch of medicines or taking injections

Treatment means knowing what is happening, observing and acting when necessary

- Dr. @RajeevJayadevan on #Mucormycosis & harmful effects of self medication

#Unite2FightCorona
Does #Mucormycosis spread through air? Does it spread from🙎human to human🙍?

Fungus spreads by spores that float around in the air; they are universal. We can't escape from spores in air

But Mucormycosis infection doesn't spread from person to person

- Dr. @RajeevJayadevan
#Mucormycosis is an Opportunistic Infection - infection that pounces upon you when you are defenseless

#COVID19 combined with poorly controlled blood glucose and misuse of steroids is an opportunistic situation for fungus/bacteria to attack
- @RajeevJayadevan
#Unite2FightCorona
#Mask stays closer to our nose & mouth and it is our responsibility to keep it clean; wash it frequently (preferably daily), use once it is dry

If you use a mask😷over & over again without cleaning, it might have not only fungi but even bacteria/viruses
- @RajeevJayadevan Image
Never wear a dirty #mask

When we breathe in and breathe out, we breathe out moisture and germs from inside our body and outside

So, the mask becomes dirty and needs to be washed more frequently

- @RajeevJayadevan says reusing of masks without cleaning can cause infection
No evidence that zinc causes #Mucormycosis

At the same time it may be promoting growth of the fungus; it makes fungus happy if you feed zinc

Also there are published papers that say zinc does not improve outcomes of #COVID19

- @RajeevJayadevan advises not to take supplements
Should we sterilize everything we use in order to prevent #Mucormycosis infection ?

Definitely Not!

If you maintain proper hygiene, keep your body clean, your surroundings clean there is no need to do anything extra; there is no need to be fearful

- Dr. @RajeevJayadevan
If wound after tooth-extraction is not maintained well, if good oral hygiene is not observed, then we increase chances of catching #Mucormycosis

- Dr. Neeta Rana
