Just as the recovery rate is rising in the second wave, a large number of patients are coming with complaints of #PostCovid syndromes: Dr. Nikhil Narayan Bante, Lungs and TB Specialist

#PostCovidCare #HealthForAll
What is #PostCOVID Syndrome?

Majority of #COVID patients recover in 2 - 4 weeks; however, in some patients, the symptoms persist beyond 4 weeks, this condition is known as Acute Post COVID Syndrome, where the symptoms remain after 12 months, it is known as Post COVID Syndrome
The most common #PostCOVID symptoms

▶️weakness / fatigue
▶️difficulty in breathing
▶️palpitation
▶️high sweating
▶️joint and muscle pain
▶️loss of taste and smell
▶️sleep disturbances

Psychological symptoms post-COVID include
▶️Depression
▶️Anxiety

: Dr. Nikhil Bante
There are two major reasons for #PostCOVID-19 symptoms: Virus-related and Immunity-related

Virus affects not only our lungs, but can affect all organs including liver, brain and kidney; so our body takes time to recover from the infection: Dr. Bante

LIVE
Our immune system becomes hyperactive due to the entry of the virus; in the fight between the body and the virus, various chemicals are released which cause inflammation in our organs; in some patients, the inflammation persists for longer duration: Dr. Nikhil Bante

#PostCovid
In some patients, the inflammation persists for longer duration, to reduce the hyperactivity of immune system, we sometimes need to administer steroids to patients: Dr. Nikhil Bante

#PostCovid: Based on studies done so far, we know that 50% - 70% of patients may experience minor or even major symptoms up to 3-6 mnths after recovering from #COVID19

This is observed more in those patients who had got moderate or severe form of the infection: Dr. Nikhil Bante
Most feared #PostCOVID condition is #thromboembolism, ie, obstruction of a blood vessel by blood clots; depending on where the clots occur, it can result in heart attack, stroke; a major complication; can result in death as well; observed in <5% post-#COVID19 patients : Dr. Bante
Early signs of blood clot in lungs - Pulmonary embolism - include difficulty in breathing, fall in blood pressure; such patients need to be hospitalized immediately and evaluated: Dr. Nikhil Bante

Severe to serious patients and those with high D-Dimer levels may require therapeutic anti-coagulants during hospitalization as well as in the #PostCovid period for 2-4 weeks

But anti-coagulants are always to be taken on physician's reference and in a guarded manner: Dr. Bante
If a COVID-recovered patient experiences slur in speech, paralysis/weakness on one side of the body, then it may be an early sign of ongoing stroke; if so, the patient should be taken to hospital immediately: Dr. Bante

In majority of patients in whom thromboembolic events occur, they occur within 4 weeks after recovery from COVID-19; in less than 3% of patients, this is observed even up to 3 months: Dr. Nikhil Bante

#PostCovidCare #HealthForAll

@MoHFW_INDIA @ICMRDELHI
Another major #PostCovid infection is chronic #cough or post infectious cough

✔️Dry cough can persist after recovery due to infection in our airways and resultant inflammation

✔️Cough can persist also due to stiffness of lungs when recovery process begins

: Dr. Nikhil Bante
We suggest deep breathing exercises for patients experiencing dry cough

Those having cough so severe that they are not even able to sleep can take inhaled steroids, but strictly based on doctor's advice: Dr. Nikhil Bante

LIVE now

Cough Fatigue: #PostCovid patients often complain about cough fractures. They may feel pain in the rib-cage towards the lower side of chest, due to chronic cough. It is important to evaluate this condition also: Dr. Nikhil Bante

#PostCovidCare
Pulmonary fibrosis is yet another feared #postCOVID syndrome which occurs due to scarring which occurs when lungs recover from COVID; scarring does not become clinically significant in 90% patients; but 10% patients may need long-term supplemental oxygen

- Dr. Nikhil Bante
#PulmonaryFibrosis is more likely to occur in #COVID19 patients whose lungs got damaged to the extent of above 70%; even among such patients, lung fibrosis is found only in around 1% patients: Dr. Nikhil Bante

More on #PostCovid at
Those who had moderate to severe #COVID19 and were on oxygen therapy, may get lung function tested after a month of recovery; to understand whether lung capacity has been fully restored and oxygen extraction capacity has been completely reinstated to previous levels: Dr. Bante
Many patients recovering from #COVID19 experience chest pain and fear they are getting heart attack; but please be reassured, heart attacks have been observed only in <3% patients recovering from COVID: Dr. Bante

More on #PostCovid from the experts at
#PostCOVID Chest Pain: Pleura tissues around lungs also get infected during #COVID19. When the pleura and lungs start to recover, pain may occur when friction occurs between the two. Costochondritis or pain in the rib-cage may be caused due to inflammation during COVID: Dr. Bante
Majority of #PostCovid secondary infections are caused due to bacterial infections, though fungal infections are also seen. These are caused because of a suppressed immunity. Urinary infection is a common secondary infection: Dr. Bante

@COVIDNewsByMIB @ICMRDELHI @MahaHealthIEC
#PostCovid fungal infection mostly seen in people with low immunity like patients of uncontrolled diabetes, organ transplant patients and cancer patients. Fungal infection is generally not seen in healthy individuals: Dr. Bante

More on #PostCovidCare in
#PostCovid Fungal infection occurs in less than 1% of the patients, most of whom who had to be in ICU, ventilator, oxygen therapy or high dose of steroids. No need to fear even if you had #COVID19 or had to take a mild dose of steroids: Dr. Bante

#COVID19 is like a war, the defence lies in the digestive system, 70-80% of our immune system is in the digestive system. So, if we address the digestive system, it will help in our recovery. It is possible through correct diet and lifestyle practices: Nutritionist Ishi Khosla
94% of people who died due to #COVID19 died due to co-morbidities; the common thread in this is inflammation; so our diet should be anti-inflammatory, so we need to eat right, keep our body fit and keep our immune system intact: @IshiKhosla1, Clinical Nutritionist

#PostCovidCare
▶️How much should we eat?
✅A rule of thumb is that we should stop eating when our stomach becomes 80% full, in line with the Japanese concept of Hara hachi bu; this is mindfulness

▶️What should we eat?
✅Remember three things: plan, protective foods and proteins

: @IshiKhosla1
Patients may experience #PostCovid symptoms up to 3-6 months after recovery: Pulmonologist Dr. Bante

Consume protein, vegetables, phyto-nutrients, adequate water to help body regenerate in post-COVID period: Nutritionist @IshiKhosla1

India has currently 2 vaccines-COVISHIELD & COVAXIN. The interval between 2 doses of COVAXIN is 4 wks & consistent studies have shown that this is the right interval: Dr. Arora, Chairman, NTAGI explains why we decided to expand gap between 2 #COVISHIELD doses to 12-16 wks
(2/n)🧵
Initial studies on #COVISHIELD were very heterogeneous. Some countries like UK went for 12 wks dose interval when they introduced the vaccine. While we were privy to this data, when we decided our interval, we went for 4 wks interval based on our bridging trial data:Dr Arora
