#Putin being very gentle in his #GenevaSummit2021 press conference. Nothing bad to say about #Biden.

He's remaining very tight-lipped in response to every question.
Putin repeatedly pointing to US police killings of African-American men and referencing #BlackLivesMatter to deflect from questions over murders and jailings of his political opponents.

He also deflects by citing the #Iraq & #Afghanistan wars.
#Putin responds do a BBC reporter’s characterisation of Russian foreign policy as “unpredictable” by listing off some of the international treaties that Donald #Trump pulled out of.
Most of #Putin’s whataboutism (which he always does) was laughable.

But none more so than his claim that Trump supporters are being persecuted for their role in the #January6th insurrection.

We all know what would happen to Russians who violently invaded the #Duma.

#Biden starting out his #GenevaSummit2021 press conference with a remarkably self-righteous opening (even by American standards).

Unlike #Russia, the US is built on an ideal, he says. He could not be the US President and not address human rights with #Putin.
#Biden says #Putin cares about his international reputation and that has been damaged by revaluations about Russia’s interference in US elections.

He says the US would never ‘directly interfere’ with another country’s election.
Biden says he told Putin the US that America has significant cyber capability and “he knows”.

He says he told Putin the US would not hesitate to use that full cyber capability if provoked by Russia.

But he says he doesn’t believe Putin wants a new Cold War.

We're still awaiting an official announcement but it looks like the EU & US have reached an agreement to a five-year truce on the Boeing/Airbus trade dispute.

This dispute is 17 years old but it majorly escalated during the Trump years. This is a big thaw in EU-US tensions.
The 5-year truce will be accompanied by a new understanding of what is and isn’t acceptable for aircraft subsidies. Image
President @vonderleyen says today's agreement "opens a new chapter in our relationship because we move from litigation to cooperation on aircraft, after almost 20 years of disputes"

"It is the longest trade dispute in the history of the WTO" Image

EU official on #G7Summit2021 says it was "reassuring to see the US again at the negotiating table and aligned on common values and international cooperation. tThe relation was strained over the past years. Now it looks invigorated."

But concern over US vaccine behavior remains.
"The EU has been the pharmacy of the world in this pandemic," the EU official says. The EU has exported 350 million doses so far this year (700m expected by year's end) while US had a vaccine export ban.

"We also managed to achieve a very balanced position on the #TRIPSwaiver".
There was "strong support by #G7 leaders for the #PandemicTreaty" the EU official says.

"The clear objective is to vaccinate the world population and finish the pandemic in 2022".

That Europe extensively debated when and how to end ban on 🇺🇸 tourists, while most Americans aren’t even aware they’ve had a ban on European tourists, is a reflection of how much more important international tourism is to Europe.

But it also shows how self-absorbed 🇺🇸 media is.
There have been TONS of articles in the US about when and how vaccinated Americans can travel to Europe this summer.

None mention that America isn’t reciprocating and vaccinated Europeans are still banned from entering the US. As if it’s irrelevant.
This is the American media’s view of Europe: a playground for vacations.

Not a real place with real people who are being banned from seeing their friends and family in the US.

Not a continent of equals who are owed fair treatment. Not a partner, but rather a giant museum.

What's become clear this week is that travel within Europe is going to be more restricted and more cumbersome than it was last summer.

🇪🇺 is now 40% vaccinated, including almost all vulnerable people. Last summer we had no immunity, and cases didn't start to climb till September
The tourism sector is furious about this.

European politicians are paying lip service to the need to revive tourism, then putting out strategies and press conferences (as we saw in Belgium yesterday) that are discouraging travel.

Contrast this to what's happening right now in 🇺🇸 (which should have same vaccination rate as 🇪🇺 by the end of the month).

They've completely removed interstate testing/quarantines and most states fully reopening tourism.

Is Europe being overcautious?

🇧🇪Belgian PM @alexanderdecroo announcing now latest changes to #Covid19 measures from next Wednesday:

🍻 Bars/restaurants can serve inside, stay open till 11:30
😷 Masks not required if whole group vaccinated
🧪 No test/quarantine required for entry into 🇧🇪 if fully vaccinated Image
For Belgian restaurants/bars to serve inside, they need to use an air quality metre and compulsory air ventilation or purification measures.

The purification level must be between 900 and 1,200 ppm CO2. If found to be higher, bar/restaurant will be immediately shut down.
After 13 August large outdoor festivals like #Pukkelpop, #Tomorrowland and #Formula1 (up to 75,000 participants) can take place.

But participants must have received both vaccine doses, or be tested regularly at the venue.
