(1) Rep Steve Scalise is in the news today regarding a scrap over domestic terrorism by people on the far left vs domestic terrorism by people on the far right.
Here are the facts.
(2) That photo is of Scalise with the two heroic USCP officers who got injured saving his life. They literally took a bullet for him, as all USCP are prepared to, for all elected members, even after 138 of them were injured by a far right MAGA mob on 1/6.
(3) You would think, that after a 5 month stay in hospital learning to walk again, and multiple surgeries and life threatening post op infections, Scalise would be among the first to stand up for all LEOs who served on 1/6.
Nope. He did nothing for them.
(4) The brave #ExGOP community has been keeping receipts since November 2020 on Scalise and every other Republican in Congress, so that future voters will know who stood up for LEOs, military, innocent staff, & the country itself, over party or person.
(5) I was a huge Scalise fan, for three and half years. After the domestic terrorist attack that almost killed him, up to the days after 1/6 when he knowingly lied about the domestic terrorist attack that dropped the Republican / Trump mask once and for all.
(6) Right now the GQP seems more focused on alleged "censorship" by private companies than on any of the urgent issues that are costing the lives of Americans every day.
A private company is allowed to set and enforce its own rules. 1A has nothing to do with it.
(7) Accordingly, the far right GQP is obsessing over the SPLC's list of what it deems extremist groups and individuals, claiming that far left domestic terrorists use that list to locate targets.
(8) Politicians who express extremist views and/or unapologetically associate with longtime extremist group leaders are gonna find themselves listed by a number of websites that try to sound the alarm about those who are most likely to plan domestic terrorist attacks.
(9) IMO the SPLC provides a very interesting resource. Whenever a far right apologist tries to tell you that most of the racist terrorism in US history is carried out by the left, and the right wing extremism of today is very small in numbers, you can test those claims yourself.
(10) Yes, there has been overlap between the Democratic party and the KKK. There has also been overlap between the Republican party and the KKK.
And other groups, of which the name changes regularly.
Just like ISIS / Islamic State had several earlier names.
(11) Once far right Republicans had encouraged, enabled, and condoned the domestic terrorism of 1/6, that caused 138 recorded LEO injuries (some of which led to permanent loss of certain body parts), I stopped listening to their claims about the same behavior from the far left.
(12) When even Steve Scalise won't say 1/6 was far right MAGA domestic terrorism, or vote for the award of medals to all USCP, like his own rescuers received, we know there is a problem with the current Congressional powerbase of the Republican party.
(13) US Rep Julia Letlow (R-LA) is on that list as part of the Louisiana delegation.
Julia's 41 year old husband Luke died on 12/29/2020 after a procedure doctors used while fighting to save his life from a severe Covid infection. politico.com/news/2020/12/2…
(14) I waited for a condolences message from the Republican held WH. It never came.
Because it would have drawn attention to the fact that it's not just seniors whose lives are at risk from Covid.
(15) As predicted, in July 2021 we have a number of Covid hotspots in several "Trump country" states and parts of states.
A simple (and prominent) statement from Mr Trump about his own experience receiving the vaccine, and why he did it, would help save some of those lives.
(16) The life-saving effect of such a statement, on 12/30/2020 would have been far more effective, too.
By now, the anti-vaxxer community has dug in its heels even more. Those who were merely hesitant have been pulled into the extremist camp.
And please don't Darwin Award me.
(17) That's for the inevitable replies I get from both far right & far left that if folk make a poor decision, they deserve to die.
Well, geniuses, not all of them decided for themselves. There are adults with low IQ or other issues. And 12-17yo kids under parental control.
(18) Technically, it's against US law to endanger your child by refusing medical intervention necessary to save his or her life. There's a persistent myth that in practice US courts don't intervene like those in other countries do.
With standing, time, & money you can get this.
(19) The scale of the problem right now means that this legal recourse is effectively not available to American children and impaired adults who medically need greater protection from Covid. Some might get it, but most won't.
These innocent Americans are counting on all of us.
(20) I know, I know, anti-vaxxers and their enablers scream at the sky about parental rights and all that. Fine.
I am using this example to make the point about how the actions and omissions of TFG & his party have contributed to preventable deaths and will continue to.
(21) It took me too long to realize this. But at least I got there in the end.
People like Steve Scalise might never get there. He will continue to wield power as the understudy to Kevin McCarthy, who must NEVER become Speaker of the House & 2nd in line to the presidency.
(22) Kevin McCarthy is a far greater threat to the US than TFG.
His flip flopping over 1/6 is quite remarkable. He has spent his entire adult life seeking political power & is poised to become Speaker after the next midterms.
We must do all we (lawfully) can to stop this.
(23) House Republicans were so successful in 2020 that the margin is essentially single figures. When a POTUS is new in office, the opposition party typically does well in the first midterms. Then there's the R voter suppression tactics.
2022 House primaries are underway now.
(24) I'm a conservative. There are certain Democrat policies I vehemently oppose.
But the need to save as many lives as possible right now is paramount.
The world needs the US to be a stable, functioning democratic country again. Please help us.
(2) Even if every "spare" vaccine in the world was re-routed to countries that don't have enough, it still would not prevent the existing and coming catastrophes.
And there is a sound logical AND ETHICAL case for not doing that, too.
(3) I'm saying this from a country (NZ) that is way behind on it's own vaccine program and is vulnerable to a large number of preventable Covid deaths if the next 90 days don't go well.
So I hardly have a vested interest against such countries.
Main reason I want healthcare workers with access to me to have to show their vaccine status? Tells me whether or not they understand science enough to be qualified for the job.
I will #GetVaccinated soon (NZ is slow.) Folk like me don't have a "99% chance" of survival.
BTW, I highlighted diabetes as a COVID complications risk factor but there are many other medical reasons I am in this category.
This is why I've taken Covid seriously since Jan 2020 when I first heard about it. I was also predisposed to trusting scientists over politicians.
People with health or disability issues (esp when long term) have to learn about medical science in order to stay alive. We have to educate everyone around us who could help increase or decrease our survival chances, often including healthcare workers who should know better.
I'm sure this is a graphic I would enjoy. 136 people so far clicked "like." If you can explain it to me, I'd be grateful. The context is a tweet about the #SandyHook lawsuit against Remington.
(And please check for replies before replying or I will be swamped. Thanks.)
(2) By the way, the next names on the Atlantic storms list are #Fred and #Grace. This season is forecast to be above-average in number and intensity of storms.
For now, #Elsa is the only hurricane-ish storm near the USA.
It has not yet made landfall but that's expected today.
(3) As always, excellent coverage on the Weather Channel:
