1. US invaded #Afghanistan after #Taliban refused to hand over Bin Laden after 9/11 attacks.
2. US invaded #Iraq based on tortured “confession” of Ibn al-Sheikh al-Libi that AQ was working with #Saddam to get WMDs.
3. But, just like AQ, there no WMDs in Iraq - until invasion.
4. Abu Musab al-#Zarqawi left Afghanistan to set up AQI in Iraq to fight US.
5. His tactics were so brutal than even AQ central tried to curb them.
6. Shia and Sunni groups who’d both fought occupiers turned on each other while US back one against the other.
7. Abu Ghraib abuse images shocked the world but Enhanced Interrogation Techniques (#torture) first used in Kandahar, Bagram and #CIA ‘black sites.’
8. Alleged AQ & Taliban captives sent to #Guantanamo where General Geoffrey Miller applied US approved torture methods.
9. Miller redeployed to #AbuGhraib and #CampBucca when abuses took place.
10. In Bucca, AQI prisoners met Saddam supporters and formed #IslamicState in Iraq. ISI became #ISIS, then IS.
11. IS didn’t just attack US. They hit everyone. 17 IS leaders had been in Bucca.
12. IS went global and appeared in Afghanistan where they declared Taliban “apostates” and fought them.
13. Taliban were effective in fighting IS but ex-Afghan government had benefited from this. IS remains a major threat to Taliban. IS attacked Taliban as it entered Kabul.
14. The AQ spectre with Taliban is a red herring. Despite presence, no AQ attacks have been launched from Afghanistan on foreign soil. Taliban won’t allow it.
15. AQ’s biggest presence was in #Syria where it dissolved and became #HTS - a local entity confined to fight
against Syrian regime. It reassures West and, even fights and imprisons those still aligned to AQ central.
16. AQ may have been the original threat to the West but invasions of Afghanistan and Iraq created something far worse. Irony is that Taliban now also faces that threat.
17. The invasion of Afghanistan all led to this moment. It was a cumulative failure and disaster of world-shaking proportions. But it’s time to get end “imperial hubris” and change tired two-decade old narratives and give peace and reconciliation a chance.

What a coincidence. In a major new report, Israel has been accused by Human Rights Watch for carrying out “crimes against humanity” with the use of a system of “apartheid and persecution” against the Palestinians of Gaza and the West Bank. 1/6
Simultaneously, in the week that police officer Derek Chauvin was found guilty of the murder of George Floyd, a devastating report published in the US has described police shootings of people of African decenct as “crimes against humanity.” 2/6
In both the case of Israeli state and the US police, the reports have called for a the culprit nations to be prosecuted at the International Criminal Court at The Hague. Unfortunately, that’s where my optimism ends. 3/6

One of the rioters killed by police in Washington identified as Ashli Babbit, a 14-year veteran who served four tours with USAF as a 'high level security official.' That means she took part in Iraq, Afghanistan, Somalia or Syria or in the rendition of prisoners to Guantanamo 1/4
or other secret prisons. Of course, none of that matters because she was serving her country. In fact, even those who oppose Trump probably praise her service record and would otherwise have seen her as a true patriot because of it. 2/4
Now that she's been identified as part of an "insurrection" against the very nation she claimed to serve I wonder if anyone will question the machinery and system that sewed her path to violent confrontation, like they've done with Muslims for the past two decades 3/4

Don't welcome news of any death sentence but, under his leadership Pakistan was used by CIA to kidnap people from their homes in the middle of the night, in front of their families. I will never forget the night Pakistani ISI and US CIA agents stormed

cnn.it/2S2Q2AC
into my house in the middle of the night and shutting out my life for the next three years. Musharraf boasted in his book - published by the same people who published my book - that he received "millions of dollars in bounty money" for all those he handed over.
It was under Musharraf that Pakistani airspace was used to allow bombing missions into Afghanistan that killed thousands. It was under this man that war flared up in the KPK (NWFP) region and armed UAV (drones) began targeted assassinations and brutal internal conflict.
