So what if Extinction Rebellion isn’t popular? We’re protesting to bring about change and it’s working.
We’re told that in order to be successful, XR must offer people hope.
Sorry, but what we all need is the full truth about the climate crisis. 🌊🔥1/16
independent.co.uk/climate-change…
How can it be that XR was named no.1 climate influencer and a few months later rated the most disliked disruptive protest group globally? Maybe it’s not bizarre because social movements accelerate history, and that is more often than not an uncomfortable process for society. 2/16
History tells us those driving social change will be roundly disliked. Martin Luther King Jr. is revered now, but at the time of his death in ’68 – having been the face of some of the most successful civil rights campaigns in the US – 75% of the 🇺🇸 public disapproved of him. 3/16
We’re told that in order to be successful, XR needs to offer people hope – but truth is what’s missing, not hope. People need the full facts about the climate crisis, whether or not that’s a popular message. 4/16
🇩🇪🇺🇸
🇦🇺🇨🇳
When people are confronted with hard truths that can split public opinion: some are turned off and others are moved to act. It’s a💯different approach to the sort of 🌞positive psychology traditionally used by charities to secure monthly donations 🤑. So far it’s working. 5/16
Just weeks after XR’s first major rebellion in April 2019, parliament declared a 🚨climate emergency🚨 and a month after that the UK became the first country to sign a net zero date into law. 6/16
Six select committees commissioned a citizens’ assembly designed to understand 🧕🏽👷🏻🧑🏾‍🎤👩🏼‍🎓👨🏾‍🏭👩🏾‍💼👩🏼‍🚒🧛🏽‍♀️👨🏿‍🏫🧑🏾‍🍼💁🏻‍♂️public preferences on how we transition to a fossil fuel free economy.
Though words are yet to be followed by actions.🤦🏽‍♀️ 7/16
Last week ex @LBC presenter @MatthewStadlen told viewers of @JeremyVineOn5 his life was made easier as a journalist when XR were on the streets. Our disruption made the crisis “sexy”; without it it was almost impossible to give the issue air time on the talk radio station. 8/16
As of January 2021, the 🇬🇧 has the highest levels of public concern about the climate of all 50 nations polled by the UN, with 81% saying the issue is a “global emergency”. Another study by BT found almost 50% of UK adults feel powerless in the face of the climate crisis. 😰9/16
This creates a mandate for the government to act decisively on the climate crisis. And we know from the pandemic that when people are faced with an existential threat they are willing to pull together and make drastic changes in order to save lives. 😷🦠10/16
Yet the UK government is missing in action, failing to keep up with their own decarbonisation timeline and signing off licences on new oil fields and coal mines. 🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥⛽️⛽️⛽️⛽️⛽️🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥11/16
XR’s actions use disruptive civil disobedience to light a fire under the government, creating a nonviolent political dilemma while there’s still time to mitigate the worst of the crisis. But we didn’t think this up, we’re drawing on a long history of rebellions in 🇬🇧 12/16
One notable example is the mass trespass of Kinder Scout in April 1932 which was instrumental in securing the rights of urban working class people to access the countryside. 🥾13/16
And you can trace back the right to 🗳 for just about everyone in🇬🇧 (perhaps with the exception of landowning men 🎩) to acts of civil disobedience by the Chartists and the Suffragettes.
We’re rebellious people and it’s shaped the society we live in today. 14/16
At those key times in history we were faced with the choice between standing up or carrying on as normal.
There is little question that humanity is facing another of those moments right now – the @UN has said unequivocally that the situation has reached 🚨“code red”🚨. 15/16
So it’s time to rebel, not just because it’s the right thing to do, but because it works.

As the #ImpossibleRebellion draws to a close, the analysis will inevitably begin.
One of the things that has been clear though is a shift in the way XR is being covered in the 🇬🇧 🗞.
Like a samba-dancing mosquito🦟, our persistence is paying off. 1/7

This piece by the @FT’s @henrymance discovers a quality long since thought extinct in the UK press: nuance – and it’s a joy to read. Henry *gets* us. And in a world of ‘but China’ 🇨🇳and ‘Gail’s car’ 💀🚙💨 that’s a step change in the narrative from the streets of shame. 2/7
We never started #ExtinctionRebellion thinking we were ‘right’🤓📚, that we had all the answers. Nor that we were going to be the people 👩🏽‍🚒🚑who sorted anything out. This shit is way too complex, interrelated and 🤯 for the kind of quick-fix activism of old. 3/7

We're @cityoflondon to demand NO NEW FOSSIL FUEL INVESTMENT.

The City continues to funnel billions into fossil fuels that can’t even be used if we are to stay within the targets required by the #ParisAgreement. The @IEA agree.

#Thread 1/5
In May @IEA said if the world is to meet the target of net zero emissions by 2050, all new investment in fossil fuels must cease by the end of this year. Our demand is in keeping with the science & all expert opinion - but bankers choose short term profit over long term life. 2/5
DID YOU KNOW - if the @cityoflondon was a country, it would be world’s 9th biggest emitter of CO2. The top 60 banks spent $3.8 trillion on fossil fuels since the 2015 Paris Accords. Their 2020 investments are more than those in 2016 or 2017: xrb.link/X61r0I148z0

🚨🔨 IN CASE OF CLIMATE EMERGENCY, BREAK GLASS 🚨🔨

At 7am 8 women lined up at the European office of @jpmorgan in Canary Wharf and carefully broke 2 windows with hammers and chisels. Wearing all black, the women used painted hammers bearing words such as LIFE, LOVE and CARE.
Care was taken to make sure no one inside or near the building was put at risk of harm.

After the action, the women sat down in a circle and waited for the police to arrive.

They were holding hands & wearing patches that read ‘Deeds not words’ and ‘Stop the harm’.
Today’s action is the continuation of a campaign by people taking similar acts of careful and deliberate property damage at banks responsible for funding and accelerating the climate and ecological emergency.

JP Morgan fund more fossil fuel activity than any other bank.

Why are @metpoliceuk concerned by an art installation @antepavilion? Under what powers are they arresting employees of an art space with no connection to xr? This is a vast overreach of police powers, and suppression of freedom of expression. #Art #Arrests

After the printworks blockade in sept 2020 the bamboo tension structures were deemed prize winning by architecture critic @PhinHarper saying they "recall the sustainable motives of high-tech architecture" in this @dezeen article:

In 2021 the structures were selected for the @antepavillion 2021 Special Early Summer Commission.. "Our bartizans of tensegrity bamboo towers, or ‘beacons’ as we lovingly call them, were born out of a need to speak truth to power" #Art #TellTheTruth

When you talk about freedom, you mean freedom to lie to us & exploit us, freedom to deny the truth, freedom to avoid scrutiny, freedom to bypass democracy.

We want freedom from the climate and ecological emergency #WeWantToLive #FreeTheTruth #FreePress #FreeDemocracy
😂Everyone knows the press isn’t free - we haven’t had a PM that wasn’t backed by #Murdoch for 40 yrs.💩 Do you care about the citizens of this country and how many will die as a result of the #ClimateEmergency - or are you really that out of touch? #FreeTheTruth
We haven’t limited access to the news, everyone can read @thesun & @DailyMailUK online. Have you read your own @theCCC report about how you’re failing to meet your own climate targets? That’s the news we all need to read #FreeTheTruth

extinctionrebellion.uk/2020/09/04/bre…
Broxbourne and Knowsley are home to News Corp titles @TheSun @thetimes @thesundaytimes @Telegraph @DailyMailUK @TheMailOnSunday @EveningStandard and others. The plan is to maintain the block and prevent these papers reaching newsstands on Saturday.
