HAPPENING NOW: The U.S. Senate Judiciary Committee is holding a hearing on the Supreme Court's shadow docket and the harms of Texas' unconstitutional abortion ban #SB8.
“It’s important to understand that #SB8 was preceded by policies and legislation that reduced access to care by creating medically unnecessary obstructions to health care…#SB8 was the culmination of a decade of erosion of access to abortion health care.” @DonnaHowardTX
"This is about personal freedom and respecting that women know what is best for them, their family, and their destinies. This is about health care and trust in the doctor-patient relationship." —@DonnaHowardTX
“Both our right and access to abortion are at a perilous crossroads and with that our liberty and our equality are in crisis as well..." —Fatima Goss Graves, @nwlc CEO
"...because with every attack on our fundamental human right to reproductive health care, including abortion care, each of those values erode. And a right without access is a right denied.” —Fatima Goss Graves, @nwlc CEO
"Laws like #SB8 do not eliminate the need for abortion, they simply remind us of the indignity of not being afforded our full constitutional protections. And bearing the brunt of this law will be Black and Indigenous and Latinx individuals." —Fatima Goss Graves, @nwlc CEO
"We need Congress to protect the right to abortion and pass laws like the Women’s Health Protection Act that protect and expand abortion access." —Fatima Goss Graves, @nwlc CEO
"The ability to determine when or whether you have children or how you parent those children is fundamentally tied not only to your personal liberty and privacy but your ability to be truly equal in this country.” —Fatima Goss Graves, @nwlc CEO
“We must ensure that there is a statutory right for providers to provide abortion and reproductive health care and patients to continue to receive that care...free from unnecessary restrictions...This body must pass the Women’s Health Protection Act and EACH Act.” @SenAlexPadilla
“For people who are especially low-income and who already lack consistent access to health care the thing that worries me the most is also our infant and maternal mortality crisis which is heightened in Texas..." —Fatima Goss Graves, @nwlc CEO
"...And when you add on that what we know about people and our ability to be able to be economically secure and to thrive, I am deeply worried about what is happening right now today..." —Fatima Goss Graves, @nwlc CEO
"...and about the copycat laws that are going to come up and likely will pass as people have been inspired by Texas. We are in both a public health emergency in this country and also a constitutional crisis.” —Fatima Goss Graves, @nwlc CEO

CASE UPDATE: Last night a federal judge granted our request to block part of a new Arizona abortion law just hours before it was set to take effect. The “reason ban” portion of the law will remain blocked while the case continues.
Arizona has existing abortion restrictions that make it harder for people to access care, including:
❗A mandatory 24-hour waiting period
❗A ban on the use of telemedicine for medication abortion services
❗A law banning advanced practice clinicians from providing abortions
“People should not be interrogated about their reason for seeking an abortion. There are no right or wrong reasons...We will keep fighting this ban and the personhood requirement until they are struck down for good.” Emily Nestler, Center Senior Counsel
#BREAKING: Today the U.S. House of Representatives voted YES for the Women’s Health Protection Act. We are one step closer to a future where we're ALL free to make the personal decisions that shape our lives, futures & families. #ActforAbortionAccess#WHPA
This is the first time in history the House of Representatives is voting on proactive, stand-alone legislation to protect abortion rights. 👏
We currently face a wave of anti-abortion legislation across the nation and a looming Supreme Court case that threatens to undermine #RoevWade. By passing the Women’s Health Protection Act, the House of Representatives has made it clear: enough is enough.
HAPPENING NOW: The U.S. House of Representatives is beginning one hour of debate on the Women’s Health Protection Act. #WHPA#ActForAbortionAccess
"Everyone everywhere should have the freedom to make their own personal health care decisions without interference from politicians." —@rosadelauro
"This legislation simply ensures that no matter where they live, patients can access abortion services and health care providers can provide this care without medically unnecessary and burdensome restrictions." —@FrankPallone
HAPPENING NOW: @RepJudyChu, @SpeakerPelosi, and other leaders in Congress are speaking about why they are voting TODAY on the Women's Health Protection Act #WHPA. 👏
Thank you @RepJudyChu, @AyannaPressley, @RepBarbaraLee & @RepDianaDeGette for recognizing our human rights & working to build a future where we are all free to make the personal decisions that shape our lives, futures & families.
"The right to reproductive freedom is essential. It’s a constitutional right and make no mistake extreme and dangerous laws like SB 8 in Texas will harm people of low incomes and people of color most and will eventually...take abortion rights away from all people.”—@RepBarbaraLee
#BREAKING: We just filed with the U.S. Supreme Court AGAIN in our ongoing fight to block Texas’ radical ban on abortion #SB8. The plaintiffs in this case are a broad coalition of Texas abortion providers led by @WholeWomans.
➡️ What's different this time: We've asked #SCOTUS to hear the defendants’ motions to dismiss the case, which were denied by the district court—and hopefully, expedite the case.
Every day that Texas’ ban is allowed to stay in effect has severe consequences on the health and well-being of millions in the state.
This is a historic moment—with an outpouring of support for #reproductiverights from the Biden administration (@POTUS), celebrated professional athletes like Megan Rapinoe (@mpinoe) and literally THOUSANDS of people who have had abortions.
“...Individuals from sports, law, medicine, government, and diverse walks of life are stepping forward to have their voices heard by the Supreme Court." - Nancy Northup, Center president and CEO.
