Messaging to the public on #COVID19 pandemic has been wrong, most of the time, and lagging behind the science.
For the first year it was wash your hands, stay indoors. Washing hands is good hygiene, but wasn't going to stop COVID. On staying indoors, they were wrong... 1/
Then there was the flip flopping on masks. Officials who were mask skeptics became mask fanatics, overnight, once governments started alleviating masks shortage.2/
The current messaging on vaccines is 'Take your f...... shot', no matter what. Vaccination campaigns have been successful in nbr of western countries. The hammering message is aimed/shouted at those who didn't yet, in an ungentle way that castigates, excludes and marginalises. 3/
Vaccines are the new tool govs have against the pandemic. They are the equivalent of lockdowns: they lower the circulation of the virus and alleviate pressure on the health care system by lowering the odds of infections, but they won't prevent infection at the individual level 5/
Your immunity is waning? Take a booster. How many? No one knows for sure. Maybe we are going to need two shots or more every year because we still don't know how long immunity provided by vaccines lasts. 6/
Although preliminary studies on people who were infected by #COVID19 and received a vaccine show an immunity that is plateauing. 7/
Waiting for new treatments for #COVID19? And there are some very promising ones in phase 3 trials waiting for authorization. This will not replace vaccines, we are told. 8/
Vaccines have been excellent at lowering infections and hospitalizations, and in a certain way a game changer, not against the pandemic, too early to judge, but at least in terms of allowing a quasi normal, not yet fully normal, economic activity to resume. 9/
Throughout the pandemic, there was severe lack of leadership and good creative governance in times of crisis, not to mention the unpreparedness, so governments tailored their public health message to what they can actually do. #COVID19 10/
And one thing that was totally absent from public health messaging throughout the pandemic is the idea of care. That governments have to care and protect the people who elected them to do this job. It is in the social contract. 11/
Not only the idea of care was absent, but all the burden of the pandemic was to be exclusively on citizens, small businesses, and the vulnerable, while govts tried to hide their incompetence by taking away our liberties and dividing society: vaccinated against unvaccinated. 12/
I am angry against the media who not only let governments get away with this but amplified their messages without questioning. Media are the fifth estate, they are the ones who should hold governments accountable. 13/
Look at this report by state media CBC on only one aspect of the #Trudeau's dismal response to the pandemic. I am sure the producers and the journalists who worked on this have been in the know before the Sept election but delayed pub until Oct 14. cbc.ca/news/canada/ca… 14/
#Trudeau has been re elected with a minority gov, and giving his incompetence and his gov incompetence, we are looking now at a lost decade for #Canada.

"regarding the elephant in the room: publicly raising any element of hesitation about #COVID19 vaccines will be seen by some as irresponsible. But the alternatives—privately raising concerns or simply remaining silent—are arguably more detrimental to public trust in the long run"
