🆕 ✨In recent years, low vaccine coverage has led to an increase in #measles cases in the US and #Europe, even after many countries had previously achieved elimination status.

In the US, nearly 1,300 #measles cases were recorded in 2019, with the vast majority occurring in tight-knit communities with low vaccination rates.
The #EuropeanUnion saw a nearly fivefold increase ⬆️ in measles since 2015, with 20,000 new cases recorded in 2019 and two nations (the #CzechRepublic & #Greece) losing their elimination status.
The #COVID19 pandemic caused the largest disruption to immunization programs in recent history, leaving millions of children unvaccinated or under-vaccinated against measles in 2020. ⤵️

Precautions taken to mitigate the spread of #COVID19, like #masks & social distancing, may have prevented other infectious diseases like measles from spreading, but in places where mask-wearing drops off, lower vaccine coverage could create the perfect storm for future outbreaks
To prevent resurgences, we must:

🔸Encourage clinicians to build trust with their patients and discuss vaccination early and often
🔸Contain measles once introduced into a community
🔸Require vaccinations before traveling to regions where vaccine-preventable diseases are common

“Many of our physicians are at a breaking point,” IHME's @AliHMokdad told @business.

“It’s not easy to be day in and day out in an emergency room, in an ICU, looking at someone who is dying because he or she is not vaccinated.” #COVID19 #VaccinesSaveLives #DeltaVariant
In 15 states, patients with confirmed or suspected #COVID19 are taking up more ICU beds than a year earlier, according to @NIH_NIAMS data. These are top states with highest %s of ICU beds occupied by COVID-19 patients:

✨🆕 IHME researchers published today in @sciencedirect – "Estimating the population at high risk for tuberculosis through household exposure in high-incidence countries: a model-based analysis" using #TB data from the 2019 #GBDstudy. #tuberculosis sciencedirect.com/science/articl…
The researchers estimate that in 20 high-incidence countries, 38 million individuals live in a household with someone with pulmonary #tuberculosis — with children under 5 making up 12% of populations with home exposure.
➡️Findings include: #Zimbabwe, #Mozambique, #Zambia, and #Pakistan have the highest proportion of the population with household exposure.

Dr. Stephen Lim, Senior Director of Science & Engineering here at IHME, wrote for @SeaTimesOpinion about @SeaPubSchools decision to cancel remote-learning for grades 6-12 and failures to achieve proper levels of vaccination to protect children. #COVID19 🧵
seattletimes.com/opinion/we-fai…
In the United States, these are the stats on children and #COVID19:

▪️>17,000 have been hospitalized
▪️>4,000 have suffered from Multisystem Inflammatory Syndrome
▪️>400 have died
Vaccines — our most effective tool — aim to protect vaccinated individuals but also those who cannot be vaccinated, including children < age 12. This works by building a “wall” of immunized individuals around these groups — what we call herd immunity.

So far, we have failed.

📊⚖️ @AliHMokdad & @DrEricDing write for @ThinkGlobalHlth about the data pointing to the need for COVID-19 vaccine boosters & how the U.S. government needs to put the groups who can benefit most from these boosters at the front of the line. #VaccineEquity📄thinkglobalhealth.org/article/time-s… Image
🇺🇸📝💉The US government should begin rolling out COVID-19 booster shots for:

▪️people who are immunocompromised
▪️adults aged 60 and older
▪️racial and ethnic minority groups
▪️health care workers
▪️other essential workers
▪️people experiencing homelessness
▪️incarcerated people
📣 Boosters should be prioritized in the United States only for individuals who are at greatest risk of dying from the disease or have a high risk of spreading COVID-19 infection. #COVID19 #VaccineEquity #DeltaVariant
