1/ Grassroots Canadian Impact

Been feeling a bit demoralized lately (as my tweets likely indicate).

This beacon of light is rejuvenating.

Here's a summary of our massively successful @ThisisOursShotCA campaign that has helped us be #TogetherAgain

Thank you.

2/ Townhalls

We hosted 8 @thisisourshotca Townhalls with 7 influential hosts & 30 leading national medical experts along with many partner townhalls.

Total of 4.2 Million impressions with 3.1 Million views on @Meta answering common questions & doing some quality myth busting. Image
3/ Power of the People

We were supported by the amazing Dr. @wick_22 as one of our leading ambassadors and true Canadian Icon @VancityReynolds to help launch & support the campaign.

Along w/ other amazing Canadians such as @SarahMcLachlan @MichaelBuble @Cmdr_Hadfield & more Image
4/ Reducing Barriers

Part of our mission was always to reduce barriers, meet people where they were at & we were able to support 130+ pop-up Vaccination Clinics nationally.

Specifically targeting lower income, refugee, ethnic, Indigenous and urban youth based communities. Image
5/ T-Shirts

We started this as a T-shirt campaign & witnessed it blossom into so much more.

We sold >65,000 shirts (in over 30 languages) & donated $111,000 to @KidsHelpPhone yesterday to help support mental health.

Big shoutout to @anumationart for your awesome contribution! Image
6/ Social Media

Some metrics for both @thisisourshotca & the Rewards for Change campaign are below.

Impressions:
@Facebook: 122 Million
@YouTube: 31 Million
@Twitter: 8 Million
@TikTokCanada: 1.1 Million

Total reach close to 30 Million.

7/ Social & Earned TV/Print Media

463 traditional media stories
>291 Million earned media impressions
1,686 earned social media stories
>15 Million earned social media impressions

All networks mainstream, ethnic, radio, TV.

We were there & consistently driven by facts. Image
8/ Overall Impact

~30% of Canadians became more willing to take vaccines over the last 6 months.

2.3 Canadians influenced by the campaign

1/3 ranked vaccine confidence messaging/incentives as #1 reason they changed their minds.

90% of that change from @thisisourshotca Image
9/ We Saved Lives

Look at the amount of morbidity & mortality in under-vaccinated populations globally.

Our campaign was transformative & saved many Canadian lives.

An ambitious collaboration between grassroots medical activists, influencers, community leaders + corporations. Image
10/ Thankful

All of us were brought together by our dedication to service, humanity & compassion.

Countless hours on Zoom, the phone, Whatsapp, discussing & understanding data.

All in between our clinical/personal responsibilities.

It took a village & we're forever grateful. Image

1/ #Omicron 🧵

Been a few weeks since we heard of #OmicronVariant

Thought I would look at what we have learned so far, and some questions that remain, using @OurWorldInData & some global reports.

So at peak, South Africa has had ~400% increase in cases.

#COVID19BC
#cdnpoli Image
2/ #Omicron - South Africa

Can we attribute the rise of cases directly to Omicron?

Looks like the answer is yes.

South Africa cases are 100% Omicron now.
Botswana ~20%.
Canada/UK/USA still low, but increasing.

(Other countries where it has been found for comparison) Image
3/ #Omicron - What's happening with Delta?

This seems obvious, but just to confirm with the sharp increase in Omicron, there is a concurrent steep decline of #DeltaVariant as it is displaced.

This makes us all tense as we still have a lot to learn, but it's not all doom & gloom Image

1/ #COVID19BC - @CDCofBC Data Update

This data is up until Nov 23rd (posted yesterday).

Important to go through to give a reference point of where we are at & where we can look at the potential #Omicron impact over next few weeks.

Cases/Hospitalizations dropping.

#BCPoli
2/ #COVID19BC - Vaccines + Kids

Will come back to this.

Slight uptick in cases from 9-11 yo recently.

Only ~35% of kids from age 5-11 yo are registered for #COVIDVaccine right now.

Recent data in 12-18 yo from @CDCgov showed Pfizer 93% effective.

Expect similar in 5-11 yo.
3/ #COVID19BC - Hospital Admissions

New hospitalizations declining.

Deaths continue to be in >age 60.

@WHO has said that if over 60 yo they are recommending against international travel

W/ risk of reinfection + #Omicron unknown, this is reasonable.

#BCPoli
2/ Age & Vaccination

This graph shows that children under 12 years‐old are
generally at lower risk of infection than other age groups, even after returning to school in September.

Lower # of cases among fully vax individuals compared to unvaxxed across all age groups & time.

2975 exposure notifications, in 830 schools.
45% of schools had one (until Nov 13)

1/ Last week there was a @UBCCPD Webinar "Addressing Anti-Indigenous Racism in the B.C. Health Care System"

I found it super insightful.

The summary will be available soon on the CPD website, but want to share a few highlights/takeaways.

2/ Avoid Pathologizing Indigenous Peoples

This was a theme that came up a few times.

Dr. Evelyn Voyageur shared this thought:

“The lifestyle they have chosen is a defence mechanism to the trauma they experienced” as a reflection to residential school survivors.
3/ Pitfalls

One of the most enlightening pearls were pitfalls people who have seemingly good intentions may encounter while doing Anti-Racism Work and promoting Indigenous Cultural Safety & Humility

This was presented by @LenPierre2 - an Indigenous Cultural Safety Consultant

1/ Wishing everyone who celebrates a Happy Diwali & Bandi Chhor Divas.

To those who do not know the historical significance, I will briefly share what I have learned about it through the years.

As per @SikhRI, Bandi Chhor Divas represents "Emancipation Day" Image
2/ Sikh Gurus

Sikhi is guided by the teachings of 11 Gurus (leaders who guide us from darkness to light) from Guru Nanak Sahib to the Guru Granth Sahib (our scriptures in homes/Gurduaras).

Guru Hargobind Sahib was our 6th Guru; Bandi Chhor Divas remembers his imprisonment.
3/ What Happened?

Guru Sahib was imprisoned by Emperor Jahangir at the Gwalior Fort for months-years (uncertain how long exactly)

Alongside Guruji, were 52 imprisoned political prisoners, the Hindu Rajahs (Kings/Princes)

1/ New Opportunities

For the new people here, a brief bio/background.

A Sikh Family Doc, grandson of a 2x refugee Physician.

To be a Sikh is not only an articulation of Faith, but also to me means one who is always learning/unlearning.

Same applies to medicine.
