1/ @VCHhealthcare - 🦠 PCR Result Changes

Reminder:

IF you test NEGATIVE --> don't need to self-isolate, but if you still have respiratory symptoms, stay home until you feel better.

IF you test POSITIVE --> you must self-isolate, but some changes now ➡️➡️

2/ Symptoms: Reminder

#OmicronBC
#BCPoli
3/ Self-Isolation:

"Do not go to work, school, or to any public places for
7 days from when your symptoms began, OR from your test date if you’re not sure

(10 days for those who are not fully vaccinated)"

- @VCHhealthcare
4/ Family:

Please notify your household or intimate contacts that you have tested positive for COVID-19 & ask them to self-isolate if they are not fully immunized.

If other members of your household test positive for COVID-19 they should continue to isolate until 7 days.
5/ Family - Asymptomatic:

Household members who are fully-vaccinated can continue their regular daily activities and self-monitor for symptoms; they do NOT need to self-isolate
6/ When to present for Assessment (NOT testing only)

Go to an Urgent and Primary Care Centre or ER, or call 911 if you:

• have difficulty breathing
• feel very sick
• have chest pain
• feel confused
• can’t drink anything
7/ End isolation when:

- At least 7 days have passed since your symptoms started, or from test date if you did not have symptoms (10 days for those who are not fully vax)

- Fever has resolved for 24 hours without the use of fever-reducing 💊💊

AND

- Symptoms have improved 😃
8/ Mild Symptoms

There are more nuances for people who are immunocompromised or have severe illness, but I just wanted to focus on the general population who will likely get mild symptoms

Stay safe & stay vigilant.

1/ #Omicron 🧵

Been a few weeks since we heard of #OmicronVariant

Thought I would look at what we have learned so far, and some questions that remain, using @OurWorldInData & some global reports.

So at peak, South Africa has had ~400% increase in cases.

#COVID19BC
#cdnpoli
2/ #Omicron - South Africa

Can we attribute the rise of cases directly to Omicron?

Looks like the answer is yes.

South Africa cases are 100% Omicron now.
Botswana ~20%.
Canada/UK/USA still low, but increasing.

(Other countries where it has been found for comparison)
3/ #Omicron - What's happening with Delta?

This seems obvious, but just to confirm with the sharp increase in Omicron, there is a concurrent steep decline of #DeltaVariant as it is displaced.

This makes us all tense as we still have a lot to learn, but it's not all doom & gloom

1/ #COVID19BC - @CDCofBC Data Update

This data is up until Nov 23rd (posted yesterday).

Important to go through to give a reference point of where we are at & where we can look at the potential #Omicron impact over next few weeks.

Cases/Hospitalizations dropping.

#BCPoli
2/ #COVID19BC - Vaccines + Kids

Will come back to this.

Slight uptick in cases from 9-11 yo recently.

Only ~35% of kids from age 5-11 yo are registered for #COVIDVaccine right now.

Recent data in 12-18 yo from @CDCgov showed Pfizer 93% effective.

Expect similar in 5-11 yo.
3/ #COVID19BC - Hospital Admissions

New hospitalizations declining.

Deaths continue to be in >age 60.

@WHO has said that if over 60 yo they are recommending against international travel

W/ risk of reinfection + #Omicron unknown, this is reasonable.

1/ #COVID19BC - Age 5-11 Vax Rollout

#BCPoli
2/ Age & Vaccination

1/ Last week there was a @UBCCPD Webinar "Addressing Anti-Indigenous Racism in the B.C. Health Care System"

I found it super insightful.

The summary will be available soon on the CPD website, but want to share a few highlights/takeaways.

2/ Avoid Pathologizing Indigenous Peoples

This was a theme that came up a few times.

Dr. Evelyn Voyageur shared this thought:

“The lifestyle they have chosen is a defence mechanism to the trauma they experienced” as a reflection to residential school survivors.
3/ Pitfalls

One of the most enlightening pearls were pitfalls people who have seemingly good intentions may encounter while doing Anti-Racism Work and promoting Indigenous Cultural Safety & Humility

This was presented by @LenPierre2 - an Indigenous Cultural Safety Consultant
