Compared to pre-pandemic year 2019, entire market down by -14%. Only a few manufacturers could increase sales, #Tesla's the strongest with +37%. Ø hit of the players in the red was a whopping -29%, #Ssangyong the biggest victim with -95%.
Comparison of Q4 shows that market decelerated towards end of year: Q4/21 down -31% compared to Q4/19. Ø hit the manufacturers in the red had to suffer was -39%, e.g.
- Audi/BMW -30%
- Ford -50%
- Mazda/Subaru -63%
- Mercedes -35%
- VW -38%
In the 'battle' of the propulsion types, we could see 3 historic events in 2021:
- after May, #BEV's startet to leave #PHEV's behind for good
- in August, BEVs overtook the Diesels
- in December, BEVs overtook the plugless hybrids (#HEV)
Q4/21 breakup by type of propulsion: Fully electrics (#BEV) with nearly 20% market share. For the 1st quarter ever, #ICE cars (gas, diesel) fell below 50%.
YoY (Q4/20 -> Q4/21), BEVs nearly doubled MS, PHEVs stayed flat, HEVs to 23% from 17%.
Chart of propulsion types from 2016 on showing decline of #ICE and dawn of the #ElectricCar. While it's soothing that hybrids (#PHEV, #HEV) didn't grow much in 2021, their large market share is proof that more education about #BEV's is needed.
For the 1st time ever, an #BEV is the leader of the most sold models ranking of a full year across the entire market: The #Tesla#Model3 was #1 in FY 2021, in Q4/21 and in Dec.21.
2 more #BEV's in the Top 15 in Q4/21: #Skoda#Enyaq & the #Tesla#ModelY. The TWO most sold cars where BEV - what a change! Incl the BEV variants of #Volvo XC40 & #Fiat#500e, the 5 BEVs in Top 15 took a market share of 33% of the Top 15.
In the D segment (mid-size car), the #Tesla#Model3 crushes the competition: In the 2nd half of 2021, Model 3 sales were
- double #BMW 3 & 4 series COMBINED
- nearly six times #Mercedes C class
- nearly six times #Audi A4 & A5 COMBINED
Looking at the plug-in market (#BEV + #PHEV), #Tesla was by far the strongest brand in the 2nd half of 2021, with the successors at max. 64% relative market share. Tesla's absolute market share of all plug-ins at 14%.
#Tesla is still the leading #BEV brand in 2021, with 21% share of the BEV market over the full year and 25% in December. #VW, #Skoda and #Audi overtook #Renault, the former #2.
In Dec, Tesla was ahead nearly double the runner-up (VW).
The last chart shows the cumulative number of fully electric cars (#BEV) sales of the 12 largest BEV brands from 2019 on. It illustrates the efforts these players bring in into the transition to #EMobility.
I wish you an electrifying 2021!

A friend of mine is interested in a #Ford#Mustang#MachE GT, so I did some research and learned of the following issues:
- There is currently a recall going on for the Mach-E regarding the windshield and the panoramic roof possibly flying off.

- Opening doors with phone or keyphob seems to work very unreliably.
- Unstable Bluetooth connection, so that phone-based functions (e.g. music, navigation via Apple Carplay) are often unusable.
- At CCS fast-charging stations, the #MachE charges only up to 80% with…

…fast DC, then it switches to slow AC charging (11kW). This is not adjustable and means that on road trips you effectively only have 200 miles of range instead of the promised 270.
- The #MachE's fast-charging limit of 150kW (DC) is rather underwhelming nowadays, in…

Excl stock-based comp, I estimate a Q4/20 operating profit (EBIT) of approx 1.7b. FY 2020 non-GAAP EBIT would amount to 4.2b.
Comparison with #VW's Passenger Cars division (25 models) 2019:
- 12 times Tesla’s deliveries
- LESS EBIT!
If you compare revenue and operating profit (EBIT) on a per vehicle basis, the difference between #Tesla and #FossilAuto blows your mind!
How would the incumbents profitably sell #EV’s when their current profit margin with gas-guzzlers is only 600 bucks per car???
Note: #Tesla‘s 2020 revenue and EBIT in the 2 tweets/charts above are my estimates. Tesla has not yet reported any financials of Q4/2020 and FY 2020. This will happen at the next earnings call by the end of Jan.
#CarMarketSwitzerland 2020:
After the great news that #Tesla achieved 500k global deliveries, I dug a bit into the 2020 car market data of🇨🇭and could discover really amazing facts.
Highlights:
- BEV market share Dec 20: 16%

Yesterday I dove into the depths of the specs & features of the #VW#ID4 and the #Tesla#ModelY. Even found some time to compile this feature comparison for you 😉
Please do also check the footnotes.
Feature-Vergleich in deutsch -> vorgehender Tweet.
In case you‘re wondering how the #ModelY can have lower #TCO than the cheaper #ID4:
- Teslas hold value better than other #EV‘s -> residual value after 10y assumed 10% for ID4, 20% for MY
- ID4 has 2y maintenance interval
- ID4 with higher consumption and higher fast-charge cost
