Today BC outlined their approach to phased re-opening.

Starting tomorrow night with removing capacity restrictions at 11:59 PM & reviewing masks/vaccine card in the next 1-2 months.

#BCPoli
2/ Principles Driving Next Steps

Focusing on:

Response: Immunization, self management, protecting those most at risk

Recovery: Rescind restrictions + adopt sustainable strategies

Readiness: Prepare for ongoing waves & troughs

"Shifting to Sustainable"
3/ Goals & Tools

Goals: Minimize deaths/serious illness, protect system, minimize societal disruption

Tools: Endemic Management (that's essentially what the list is) including: vaccines, surveillance, individual driven decisions, managing high-risk out breaks & treatment
4/ BC Compared to Rest of Canada 🇨🇦

BC has HIGH level of immunity (>90%) from either vaccination or likely infected.

In the last 2 months our hospitalization census & death rates (per 100K population) amongst lowest nationally.
5/ BC Compared Internationally

BC has HIGH level of immunity (>90%) from either vaccination or likely infected.

In the last 2 months our hospitalization census & death rates (per 100K population) amongst lowest INTERNATIONALLY as well.
6/ Short-Term Modelling

When we look at previous modelling 1 month ago, our real world data has been very similar

Even with 75% increase in contacts over the next month, don't expect to see large increase in daily hospitalizations.
7/ Balance in Easing Restrictions

Incremental easing of restrictions over next 2 months.

"Individuals and organizations to assess risks and determine comfort zones in planning for changes. We expect people and organizations to go at their own pace."
8/ Things that will continue

Masking Indoors
BC Vaccine Card
COVID 19 Safety Plans
9/ Starting Feb 16 @ 11:59 PM

Indoor personal gatherings - NORMAL

Indoor/Outdoor organized gatherings* 😷🕺🏾💃🏾

Indoor Seated Events - Full Capacity* 🏒🍿

Fitness - Full Capacity*/ No Tournament Restrictions

Restaurants/Bars/Clubs - Full Capacity*

*Masks + BC Vaccine Card
10/ Review Timeline

1 Month & 2 Month Review.

Looking at all things below.

Notice how the "Convoy" lately has had NO impact on this.

1/ Following up on this with a few things.

Quick update on what I read on South Africa & some reflections on Denmark as many people have had questions/comments about it.

We continue to do a disservice to South Africa by not recognizing their experience.

2/ South Africa - Hospitalizations

Peaked at ~10K in mid December during Omicron surge, now down to 1500ish.

From the very beginning their brilliant physicians would tell us, this is behaving differently.

Our Western arrogance refused to acknowledge this reality. Image
3/ South Africa - Critical Care

In a country of 60 Million there are currently 374 people on Oxygen and 124 who are ventilated (From #COVID19) Image

1/ Reopening: #COVID19BC

Loosening of restrictions are expected to be announced today.

Sure to be some backlash from those who are not ready.

Let's look at the UK, where they removed many restrictions on January 15th. (~ 1 month ago)

Declines across the board.

#BCPoli
2/ UK Patients admitted to hospital.

Daily numbers of patients admitted to hospital (Don't think this distinguishes from the "for" or "with")

7 day average was ~2000/day 1 month ago, decreased to ~1300/day (Feb 8th)

Lowest since Pre-Christmas.
3/ UK Hospital Census

Daily count of confirmed COVID-19 patients in hospital.

Was ~19,500 1 month ago, latest numbers ~12,000.

2/ #COVIDVaccine Age 5-11 - V-Safe & VAERS

Data from both V-Safe (@CDCgov smart phone monitoring) & VAERS systems in the States here, looking at trends.

Majority white populations from V-Safe.

Data for Dose 1 & 2 presented.
3/ #COVIDVaccine Age 5-11 - V-Safe Reactions

Summary of health impact shows: ~1-2% needed some type of medical care post vaccination.

~50-60% had some injection site reaction (mostly pain) as expected for most shots.

1/ @VCHhealthcare - 🦠 PCR Result Changes

Reminder:

IF you test NEGATIVE --> don't need to self-isolate, but if you still have respiratory symptoms, stay home until you feel better.

IF you test POSITIVE --> you must self-isolate, but some changes now ➡️➡️

1/ #Omicron 🧵

Been a few weeks since we heard of #OmicronVariant

Thought I would look at what we have learned so far, and some questions that remain, using @OurWorldInData & some global reports.

So at peak, South Africa has had ~400% increase in cases.

#COVID19BC
#cdnpoli
2/ #Omicron - South Africa

Can we attribute the rise of cases directly to Omicron?

Looks like the answer is yes.

South Africa cases are 100% Omicron now.
Botswana ~20%.
Canada/UK/USA still low, but increasing.

(Other countries where it has been found for comparison)
3/ #Omicron - What's happening with Delta?

This seems obvious, but just to confirm with the sharp increase in Omicron, there is a concurrent steep decline of #DeltaVariant as it is displaced.

This makes us all tense as we still have a lot to learn, but it's not all doom & gloom
