#Thread #Astronomy #Stars #UPDATE

An international team of scientists led by #Indian #astronomers has spotted a new member belonging to the extremely rare group of young stars that exhibit what's called episodic accretion. 1/n Image
Episodic accretion is a process where stars accrete via a disk from a more spherically distributed envelope which adds mass to the disk & makes it unstable on an irregular basis. Such instability dumps extra material onto the star & accretion rate & luminosity increase. 2/n
Indian astronomers from the @ARIESNainital as part of an international team, including from @TIFRScience and @IIABengaluru have discovered “Gaia 20eae”, the latest member of episodically accreting young stars, according to @IndiaDST . 3/n
Such rare stars — young, low-mass stars — have gained significant interest in the star-formation community lately and this study could help probe into this group of stars and their formation mechanism in greater detail. 4/n
The new research is published in ‘The Astrophysical Journal’ and provides an important test-bed to probe the various physical aspects of episodic accretion and their comparison with previously discovered sources. 5/n
On Aug 28, 2020, the Gaia Photometric Alert system — a sky survey which actively searches for the transient objects and publishes a daily report on the number of transients it detects — published a report stating Gaia 20eae has brightened by 4.5 magnitudes. 6/n
As per @IndiaDST, this “indicated a likely case of enhanced episodic accretion”. 7/n
Arpan Ghosh, PhD student with Saurabh Sharma (ARIES), Joe Ninan (@penn_state), DK Ojha (TIFR), BC Bhatt (IIA), others from @Princeton, @UofOklahoma, @JohnsHopkins, @UCBerkeley, @stsci; Nat’l Astronomical Research Institute-Thailand, Macquarie Univ began monitoring Gaia 20eae. 8/n
The team carried out simultaneous photometric (measurement of light in terms of its perceived brightness to the human eye) and spectroscopic (electromagnetic measurements) observations. 9/n
It did this using Indian facilities like the 1.3m Devasthal Fast Optical Telescope, 3.6m Devasthal Optical Telescope, 2m Himalayan Chandra Telescope, and international facilities like 10m HET telescope and 0.5m ARC Small Aperture Telescope. 10/n
The light curve of Gaia 20eae, it added, showed a transition stage when it exhibited most of its brightness at a short timescale of 34 days with a very rapid rising rate (3 mag/month); the star has now started to decay: @IndiaDST. 11/n
“The team detected strong signatures of outflowing winds generated due to accretion & presence of turbulence around Gaia 20eae. In a first-time discovery, it detected the signature of magnetospheric accretion (red-shifted absorption) component from high-resolution spectra… 12/n
…This was consistent with the signature of low-velocity in-fall of matter from the inner part of the surrounding disc onto the central pre-main sequence star as viewed from a hotter background,” the DST said. n/n

#Update #Thread #Space #Launches

For the first time since its development, India will be using #GSLV class of rockets to launch commercial missions, first of which'll be a @OneWeb constellation. All commercial launches by DoS and its arms so far have been onboard PSLV. 1/n Image
Now, @NSIL_India has identified #GSLVMk3 for commercial launch of @OneWeb satellites. Sources indicate that the next Mk3 launch could be that of OneWeb, even as another has been identified and is being readied for #Chandrayaan3. 2/n
I was the first to report in October last year about GSLV-Mk3 having inquiries for launching commercial satellites and an impending announcement (see link). 3/n

#UPDATE #Thread #science

Was caught up with something else the last couple of days. Here’s more on Prof Ajay Kumar Sood from @iiscbangalore and his appointment as the new @PrinSciAdvGoI. Prof Sood has succeeded @kvijayraghavan 1/n Image
A Year of Science Chair Prof in the dept of physics, IISc, Sood is renowned for pioneering research in quantum materials and soft condensed matter. The PSA office, established in 1999, aims to provide advice to PM & cabinet on matters related to science, tech & innovation. 2/n
Sood was born on Jun 26, 1951 in Gwalior; did MSc in Physics at Panjab Univ in 1972; PhD in Physics from IISc in 1982. 1973-1988: scientist at Indira Gandhi Centre for Atomic Research with a postdoc sojourn (1983-85) at Max Planck Institute for Solid State Research, Germany. 3/n

Here’s the first one. #Thread #Satellites #Debris

Exclusive: More than 10yrs after it was launched, #MeghaTropiques, @isro & @CNES joint weather modelling satellite that was studying water cycle & energy exchanges in the tropics has reached what’s called “end of mission”. 1/n
The satellite, which was launched in October 2011 and initially estimated to have a life of five years has worked for five-years-and-six-months more than initial estimations and sent in at least 5TB of raw data which has yielded around 30TB of data sitting on various servers. 2/n
A senior Isro scientist said: “As on date, the satellite still has 120kg of fuel and end of mission is also not because of failures in communication, solar panels or any other systems or because we lost communication. All of those are still working.” 3/n

Here we go. #Thread #space #update

2 key missions of spl test vehicle developed as part of #Gaganyaan are most likely in Aug & Dec. As I’d reported earlier, @isro is working towards 2 tests to establish crew abort & escape systems before the first uncrewed mission. 1/n
We are looking to schedule the 1st abort mission in Aug & the 2nd in Dec: Somnath. @isro to intentionally cause an anomaly & allow crew module to come out of it, do tumbling manoeuvres, deploy parachutes, & land in a designated spot on the sea before being recovered. 2/n
Aside from this — which is only one type of abort test — there are different events such as maximum dynamic pressure condition, maximum acceleration condition, some transient condition etc, in which abort will become critical in flight... 3/n

#Breaking #3Dprinting #Thread

@iiscbangalore researchers, addressing challenges of present techniques of obtaining metal powder, a major source for #3Dprinting has identified an alternative, low-cost technique to produce the same. To be useful across sectors. 1/n
Pointing out #3Dprinting creates objects by addition of material, layer by layer, @iiscbangalore said metal powders are predominantly produced using a technique called atomisation, in which a molten metal stream is broken up into fine droplets using air or water jets. 2/n
“However, despite its widespread use, atomisation returns poor yield, is expensive & inflexible in types of materials it can handle. A team led by Koushik Viswanathan, asst prof, dept of mechanical engg (DME), has identified a technique that side-steps these problems… 3/n

Here we go. #Update #Thread:

Techno-commercial evaluation of 3 shortlisted bids seeking the contract for manufacturing 5 #PSLVs@isro workhorse for nearly 30yrs — has been done by @NSIL_India. This takes process of industry building it one step closer to realisation. 1/n
@NSIL_India is now working out work-share modalities and thereby, the costing. A crucial meeting is expected to be scheduled this week, following which the price bids will be opened before the awarding of the contract. 2/n
As reported by me earlier, the three entities are: A consortium of HAL and L&T; a consortium comprising BEL, Adani-led Alpha Design and BEML, and the third is BHEL which is competing as a single firm. 3/n
