At #Stockholm50, a huge diversity of voices called for concrete measures for a global #JustTransition, showing:

💪🏼how the climate movement is raising the bar of what real climate action looks like

🌍how the #FossilFuelTreaty campaign is gaining momentum

fossilfueltreaty.org/blog/stockholm…
1/ The #FossilFuelTreaty places the claims of the most affected communities and therefore those of the indigenous peoples at the heart of its strategy in order to tackle the root cause of the #climatecrisis. Otherwise, as Nemonte Neuquino says, what are we talking about?
2/ During our #Stockholm50 pre-summit, Anoshka Violeta Irey Cameno also reaffirmed indigenous peoples' commitment to protect their #Amazon territories and their vision of development.
3/ Bob Loughman, Prime Minister of #Vanuatu, emphasized how necessary the #FossiFuelTreaty is to complement the #ParisAgreement and protect current and future generations from #fossilfuel production.
4/ #PacificClimateWarrior @MaryMoeonoKolio reminded our climate movements are first of all driven by love💪🏽
5/ Health professionals such as Dr @kdrarvind were also present at #Stockholm50. The health sector is now also leading a call to phase out fossil fuels: fossilfueltreaty.org/health-letter
6/ @mitzijonelle and thousand of youth activists continued to show their determination both outside and inside the #stockholm50 venue:
7/ 50 years is twice @vanessa_vash's age who clearly stated it is enough of delay, empty promises and false solutions.
8/ @EzikeSimon and @parents4futureG were also present to call for real climate action right after launching their letter for a #FossilFuelTreaty: parentsforfuture.org/FFT-parent-let…
9/ @jrockstrom shared his scientific knowledge to raise awareness on the impacts of #FossilFuels production. He is one of the almost 3000 scientists and academics who signed this open letter calling for a #FossilFuelTreaty: fossilfueltreaty.org/open-letter
10/ Finally, Members of Parliament such as @JytteGuteland came share their support for a #FossilFuelTreaty. +300 of MPs around the globe are already supporting the 3 pillars of the initiative and calling for a #FossilFreeFuture: fossilfuelfreefuture.org
11/ 🛢#Stockholm50 was the first @unitednations conference to clearly recommended the “phase out of all fossil fuels” and to recognise the urgent need for “financial and technical support to realize a just transition.” 👏🏼 BUT...
12/ The #Stockholm50 outcome document is still largely insufficient. However, it is a significant step forward that gives us strong arguments to return to governments at COP 27: fossilfueltreaty.org/blog/stockholm…
13/🌎Join the #FossilFuelTreaty solidarity to put an end to the destructive fossil fuel system!

A bloc of Pacific nation-states is calling for the negotiation of a Fossil Fuel Non-Proliferation Treaty.

They have called for support to manage a just transition to a "Fossil Fuel Free Pacific"

Instead, Australia just approved a new coal mine 😡 #auspol
Last year, Prime Minister Anthony Albanese said “One of the ways that we increase our standing in the region, and in particular in the Pacific, is by taking climate change seriously."

Yet in the past 6 weeks, his government has approved 2 new coal mines.
Fossil fuels are the primary cause of the climate crisis, responsible for 86% of emissions in the past decade.

The International Energy Agency & the latest IPCC report have made it clear — to avoid the worst impacts of climate change, no new fossil fuel projects can be opened.

⚠️💀While the #Amazon urgently needs to be considered as a #FossilFuel Free Zone, the Peruvian government 🇵🇪 is giving #oil a new boost by promoting internationally a series of reserves that are home to 435 #indigenous communities.

🛢️Without consulting local populations, @Perupetrosa promoted 31 areas with potential for hydrocarbon exploration and exploitation to international investors meeting in Texas.

👀An investigation from @Ojo_Publico reveals that of the 31 areas, 25 are located in the #Amazon and overlap with 435 indigenous communities in Loreto, Ucayali and Madre de Dios, and two reserves for indigenous peoples in voluntary isolation #PIACI

In the past 24hrs there's been excitement about #G7 headlines like this

But we need to talk about it 🧵

Past the headline the communiqué is rife with greenwash & inaction

🤔 These countries are still EXPANDING fossil fuels
⏰ No phaseout dates
🤯 There's a huge loophole
& more Image
🤔 These countries are still approving NEW fossil fuels

You're not phasing something out if you're still expanding it...

Despite the spin, G7 members continue to approve, subsidize & finance new fossil fuel projects.

We need a Fossil Fuel Non-Proliferation Treaty.
⏰ No phaseout dates

It's not a plan without a timeline.

We need nations that are
a) historically responsible for emissions &
b) in the best position to fund a transition

to not only end proliferation of fossil fuels, but transition away from coal, oil & gas first & fastest.
