Our Story About The Money Wives!
Twitter was agog yesterday with news of a barbaric tradition called 'money wives' - many #Nigerians were shocked that this thing happens and poured encomium on the supposed 'exposer'.
I would have kept quiet but when some men started praising the
'exposer' and calling out women for their failure (check image 2) not to expose this, I quickly opened up.
Between 2018 to 2020, we advocated against this and even travelled to Cross River (we raised money among ourselves - me, Franca and Desola) on more than ten times to meet
with victims and community leaders - I recall one crying to me on the second visit that she was taken to the shrine to swear against talking to us again or 'thunder will strike and burn her to death."
See, we were threatened by the community leaders and at a time, one violent man
roughly pushed Franca to the ground and spat on our faces and threatened to send 'spiritual snakes' to kill us. As women, we were really scared and had an afterthought over our mission. It's really scandalous that the State Government and Womens Affairs know about this tradition.
The threats were real and so, we had to write to the #EU and #UN since we tried reaching the State Govt but you know Nigeria government - they are never women-friendly and scared of ending traditional practices that are in favour of men.
The EU stepped in, at least, they have the
muscles to use their agencies - they did and months later, it was in the news and newspapers that the practice had been abolished. I and my team never took any credit.
Like I said, my outburst was to defend the many female advocates, who like us, have - since - spent their money
and risked their lives to expose this and drew the attention of #EU and #UN to it.
But when we have little resources, connections and followership, it seems we have not done, or have not been doing anything.
#ICYMI: Lagos King Flees Community With Daughter To Save Her From #FGM 🙏🏽 #Nigeria: A Lagos State monarch in Ashasa kingdom of Agbowa, His Royal Highness, Adekoya Adeolu Olaonipekun has fled his community to escape attacks by armed hoodlums, who reportedly invaded his residence
over his refusal to present his daughter for #FGM.
The monarch, who alleged threat to his life, disclosed that he lost his first child, Adekoya Grace Olushola, to the traditional rites when she was circumcised and later died of #tetanus infection at the age of 7.
Olushola died of
tetanus infection caused by the genital mutilation as established by a #Medical report issued by Dr A.A. Ajibike, a senior medical officer at the Lagos State University Teaching #Hospital, LASUTH.
The sad news of the death of his beloved #daughter, the monarch explained, was
#ICYMI: A Mother's Cry - Save Me, He's Been Beating me Because I Refused #FGM On Our Daughter! #Nigeria: Naomi Jolly (an accountant at the University of Calabar Teaching Hospital) has cried out to the police how her husband (a medical doctor) has been serially battering her over
her refusal to circumcise their daughter.
She told police interrogators that when she was subjected to FGM, she almost bled to death years ago.
“It all started in December 2015 when I gave birth to my daughter, Amanda. After delivery, my husband asked me what I know about female
circumcision and I told him I don’t like it at all. I narrated my own experience to him. That was when I was 12 years. My parents did it and I bled to the point of death. So I said to him that I will not want anyone to have such an experience.
“He said that’s why he wants our
Another Rough Journey🙏🏽
Also, in November 2018, our attention was called to a case of a 13-year-old girl (from Idoma, Benue State), resident in Lagos but was summoned for #FGM in Ogun State wherein a community of migrant-Benue people were resident.
Her people said, "If she's not
circumcised, she won't attend her parents' burial AND if she dies as an uncircumcised girl, her corpse would be thrown into a forest!
I set out for the trip with the amazing Barrister Yemi Adetiba @OluyemiOrija - the most kind lawyer in Nigeria🙌🏽 - she's the founder of @HeadfortF
We actually raised our money (I and the Barrister) to make this journey to an unknown location.
The journey was fearful, long and energy-sapping - we entered one 'igbo irumole😁' to another and Bar Adetiba's husband was calling us every now and then to track down our location.

"My Genitals Were Sewn Up With Acacia Thorns (the image)!"
Malko Jama Recalls Hers:
""I was nine. A woman came to the house. They held me down and held my legs apart and she cut me with a razor and stitched me back up with acacia thorns.
She cut out the clitoris
and the inner labia and then she cut out the flesh from the outer labia and sewed up the skin that was left.
Now they have a more modern way for stitching girls back up but at the time they used thorns like pins.
She cut out the clitoris and the inner labia and then she cut out
the flesh from the outer labia and sewed up the skin that was left.
When it was finished they took a big sheet and a cord and they bound my thighs together... so that I had to stay there with my legs together. They brought me small pieces of bread but refused to allow me water or

"My Baby Died Because Of FGM!"
Mrs C Foday Recalls Hers:
"I'm a Nigerian married to a Sierra Leonean man. I refused to be circumcised even in the face of being heavily threatened and publicly mocked by my husband's family and friends.
Then, I became pregnant and
in the process of delivery, some #women came to help me but when they opened my wrapper and saw my 'uncut private part', they washed their hands and abandoned me that I and the baby were #cursed!
I was in pain but they showed me no mercy and were about to leave the house when my
mother-in-law told me to give my consent to be circumcised or else I will die with the baby and we will both be thrown into the forest.
I have never seen very heartless people like that - my husband came into the room and ordered the circumcision.
They came back into the room and

"I Was Circumcised Twice Before The Age Of 16!"
Teliwel Diallo Recalls Hers:
"When I was eight years old, my mother told me that it was time for me to become a woman. She took me somewhere. I met other #Girls, some friends and girls from the neighboring village.
It was a big #day. I didn’t know anything about excision. I was feeling happy inside. I did not know the consequences and pain of excision.
We were maybe one hundred girls. Everyone was waiting her turn. I could hear the cries of the #girl before me. I was frozen. I could not run
because it would be a dishonor for my #family. I was wondering whether I should run away or stay, but I didn’t have the choice.
I heard the #Girls crying. My turn came. It was atrocious. Four #women caught me, put me down, opened my sex and cut me. I cried out loudly. I feel that
