This is something I’ve wanted to say to well-meaning liberal white women who are in senior positions for a while. I’m saying it now because my voice has been freed after winning the book award recently.
Dear liberal white women: I know that often you try to support and promote women of color as part of your commitment to #antiracism. It is great that you do this, but:
You need to understand that women of color are not a monolith, and that white supremacy in many institutions makes some women of color fight against others women of color to gain the attention, validation and praise of senior white people.

Another Rough Journey🙏🏽
Also, in November 2018, our attention was called to a case of a 13-year-old girl (from Idoma, Benue State), resident in Lagos but was summoned for #FGM in Ogun State wherein a community of migrant-Benue people were resident.
Her people said, "If she's not ImageImage
circumcised, she won't attend her parents' burial AND if she dies as an uncircumcised girl, her corpse would be thrown into a forest!
I set out for the trip with the amazing Barrister Yemi Adetiba @OluyemiOrija - the most kind lawyer in Nigeria🙌🏽 - she's the founder of @HeadfortF
We actually raised our money (I and the Barrister) to make this journey to an unknown location.
The journey was fearful, long and energy-sapping - we entered one 'igbo irumole😁' to another and Bar Adetiba's husband was calling us every now and then to track down our location.

Our Story About The Money Wives!
Twitter was agog yesterday with news of a barbaric tradition called 'money wives' - many #Nigerians were shocked that this thing happens and poured encomium on the supposed 'exposer'.
I would have kept quiet but when some men started praising the ImageImageImageImage
'exposer' and calling out women for their failure (check image 2) not to expose this, I quickly opened up.
Between 2018 to 2020, we advocated against this and even travelled to Cross River (we raised money among ourselves - me, Franca and Desola) on more than ten times to meet
with victims and community leaders - I recall one crying to me on the second visit that she was taken to the shrine to swear against talking to us again or 'thunder will strike and burn her to death."
See, we were threatened by the community leaders and at a time, one violent man

1) #womeninmedicine A Thread: Yesterday I wore this green suit to open up the #BE22 Women Physicians CME Conference. I felt powerful in it, I felt confident in it, & I paired it with some new @kikipriceshoes alternative energy heels. I LOVE a brightly colored suit😍 👇
2) A women not attending the #BE22 conf stopped me on my way back to my room She told me she ❤️the suit; but she could never pull it off. She asked me where I wore it, & I told her I wore it to open up the conference this morning. She said "oh my gosh, I could NEVER do that!"👇🏻
3) Here is my response: "I organize this conf. #BE22 is full of amazing 👩🏻‍⚕️, all here bc they are exhausted & work in systems that in general do not support women. They are here bc they do not hear messages that say they can be exactly who they are, & can show up as women."👇🏻

Let me repeat this very clearly. I do NOT want to erase trans people. Can you hear that in the back? They are as valid as everyone else. They exist. Live your life however you think is right within your own personal confines. Don't, however, trample on others because they
Don't agree with your personal choices. Don't think it's ok to break boundaries down because you need validation. It is not everyone's responsibility to make you feel valid. Don't think because you want to live life as a woman that makes you become a women. It doesn't & it isn't
Transphobic to say so. It's reality. Stop ignoring reality because you think you get to call the shots for everyone. You don't. Women are not here to validate you. Sex matters. Stop ignoring that. It's law. Eddie Izzard is man who enjoys dressing as a woman. I've never had any

My daughter had a horrible experience on the train from Reading to Waterloo yesterday. At Ascot a late 50s man got on and was clearly very drunk from a day at the races. She was minding her own business when he started to say: go on smile you'd be prettier etc.. 1/5
2/5 when she ignored him (the audacity of a young 22 yr old female travelling on her own) it started to escalate to full blown harassment with comments relating to rophenol and rape! Fortunately the carriage was busy and some young men who had spent the day working at Ascot...
3/5 intervened and shouted him down and made him stop. As he was leaving the train (thankfully at a stop before her) he turned to the men and held out his hand to shake saying sorry lads, it was only a bit of banter! He did not apologise to my daughter. The men told him to...

This #InternationalWomensDay I’d like to remind my doctor colleagues that medicine has an androcentric history that may impact upon women patients. That woman isn’t « difficult », she’s under-researched and we know less (and even less has been translated to practice). 🧵
We can do Better. Women are also represented less in medical and anatomical textbooks. Here are some papers for further information.

Anybody that is pregnant, should be able to decide if they want to continue being pregnant. Abortion is a reproductive right that everyone should have access to. Abortion should be an option for anyone whose life is in danger of being pregnant. #njcurj
Abortion should not be taboo and no one should be ashamed of having one or getting one. This option can be a matter of life or death. In El Salvador, women are denied this right and are even imprisoned for any suspicion of getting an abortion. #njcurj
Their constitution has defined life beginning at conception and makes abortion punishable for 2 to 8 years in prison. Up to 30 to 50 years for aggravated homicide, which some women face for having a stillbirth, miscarriage, or obstetric emergency. #njcurj

She was married off as a minor, Abandoned by her husband before she turned 18 and never given a divorce till date.. That did not discourage her... She studied, got a job as a teacher, earned and supported herself.. Even though her husband never acknowledged their marriage (1/N)
acknowledged their marriage for nearly 50 years in public... And inspite of him being CM for 3 terms and PM for 2 terms., she has proved the power of being a stong independent woman.
A true inspiration for all independent woman in a male dominant Indian society.

Ladies, let me reassure you--unless you are purposely wiping back to front, your hygiene isn't the problem.

A 🧵 on recurrent UTIs.
1/ Is it really a UTI? The best way to know if you have a UTI is to get a urine CULTURE. This is NOT the same thing as when your pee is dipped in the office or the ER! A culture actually tells you what kind of bacteria it is, and what antibiotics will kill it.
2/There are a lot of reasons for it to burn when you pee that are NOT a UTI. STDs, soaps (baby wipes count) sometimes yeast infections or BV, bladder inflammation, urethral cysts, and if you're breastfeeding or menopausal, dryness from not having estrogen around.

"There will come a day when the rotten mess of majoritarian & misogynist evil decays to its very core, collapses, and becomes the manure for living things." - A letter from feminist & historian #JDevika to Kerala's @WCC_Cinema. #Avalkoppam #Metoo (Contd)

#JDevika: "There is no hubris in human history that has not collapsed under its own weight. There is a saying in Malayalam: adiyolam cheenjhaale valam aakoo – only if it rots to its very core can it become manure." #WomenSupportingWomen #MeToo (Contd)

1. This is a thread about the #GenderWooWoo that has been on the last years. Its about how it has impacted children, esp. girls, and women, developing into a #WarOnWomen And how my country Norway has come to take leading role in this war.
2. For many, Norway stands as a symbol of equality between the sexes. True, Norway was a pioneer when it came to secure women's sex based rights, namely throug Law of equality between the sexes and through securing women's right to abortion.
3. In the course of only few years, the base for these rights have been erased due to successful lobbying by small but powerful minority groups. The strategies are well known as they are described in detail by the group's international network IGLYO. iglyo.com/only-adults/

"WhY DiDnT YoU RePoRt It"

As a traumatized 16 year old, I was told (probably truthfully) by my rape counsellor -

"the police will ask you questions in a way that will make you feel like you're lying, I don't think you're robust enough for that"

independent.co.uk/news/uk/crime/…
I did report it, 12 years later. A document resurfaced from my visit to A&E the morning after the incident occured. The nurse asked me if it was consensual.

Consensual, to me, as a sexually naive 16 yr old meant - did you fight him with everything you had? Not, did you say no?
My understanding, at 16, of the word consensual (or lack of) is important as 12 years later it undermined my report.

Had the nurse asked - 'did you say no' I would have given a different answer. I'm not blaming her, she was kind, I remember seeing tears rolling down her face

Around 2003, while working in Mumbai, many of her colleagues from varied Himalayan states of India, discussed frequently and naively on the needs of design interventions to create livelihood opportunities so as to push mountain industries that otherwise face isolation. ImageImageImageImage
They dreamt of opening #design studios from where they could work, expand on #Indian #Designscape – bringing forth the unique #mountain #lifestyles #philosophies on #materials & #form. Today, Chitku Design Studio is a result of such dreams varnikadesigns.wordpress.com/2019/06/25/mee…
