Workers have broken out of #Apple’s largest assembly site, escaping the Zero #Covid lockdown at Foxconn in #Zhengzhou. After sneaking out, they’re walking to home towns more than 100 kilometres away to beat the Covid app measures designed to control people and stop this. #China
Meanwhile nationalists in #China have convinced themselves that their country has a monopoly on wisdom re the correct handling of #Covid. They’re often going on about “the West” and its opening up but actually its the whole world apart from China which has abandoned Zero Covid
So they may think Zero #Covid is going great but here are more of the Foxconn workers who’ve broken out of Apple’s largest assembly site in #Zhengzhou to escape a Zero #Covid lockdown and walk to hometowns some more than 100 kilometres away to beat #China’s phone app restrictions
Looks like some of the escaped Foxconn employees have been detained while trying to get home and straight away caught a blast of some sort of anti-#Covid spray. #China’s Zero-Covid measures are putting massive pressure on the economy, on livelihoods, on social stability.
Some of the escaping Foxconn workers have now made it back to their home towns after being given lifts part of the way by passing cars. #China#Covid
Some truck drivers who gave Foxconn workers (who’d busted out) a ride have now themselves been put in compulsory quarantine. Workers who’ve made it to their home towns are reporting that they’re doing a week’s quarantine in schools and other temporary #Covid isolation centres.
The break out at @Apple’s largest assembly line (#Foxconn also produces other products) followed what workers felt was misleading information from bosses about #Covid cases inside the massive factory complex. One worker told us she was denied leave so she fled with her workmates.
Foxconn workers, who live in company dormitories, told us they left in a hurry & still have personal belongings in these dormitories. They’re not sure what the future holds for them in terms of returning to work at the factory making #Apple and other products. #China Zero #Covid.
Escaping #Foxconn workers have been posting some amazing footage. Here’s a group of them hitching a ride home on the back of a truck. Some truck drivers helping them out have reportedly been put into quarantine. #ZeroCovid#China
Two big factors which led to the mass exodus of workers from #Foxconn: rumours going crazy about how they were going to be treated under #Covid management and incredible widespread ignorance about the #Coronavirus as a disease.
One rumour running around was that the army was going to impose a giant "living with #Covid" experiment in that part of #Zhengzhou to see how many of them would die as a kind of test case to see if #China should open up if the carnage was not too bad.
Rather than calmly explaining that, all over the world, those who've been vaccinated are mostly only spending a few days at home with the coronavirus, the government here has warned of dire consequences and told people how lucky they are to be protected by the Party's #ZeroCovid.
In response to the outcry regarding the #Foxconn mass breakout, the company is now saying that workers will be permitted to leave if they can take one of the official buses being organised with local governments to take people directly to quarantine facilities elsewhere.
And in other Zero #Covid related news, #Shanghai Disneyland was locked down with nobody allowed to leave until they get a clear PCR test result. This was reportedly triggered by a visit from one person. #China

Today’s opening of #China’s Communist Party Congress will be dominated by a long speech from Xi Jinping which will sound turgid and formulaic but the choice of words has been workshopped for months and analysts will be pouring over it for any signs of policy shifts.
People will be searching for any shifts in economic policy priorities or any moves regarding #China’s foreign policy, especially say in relation to the #US. Naturally, Chinese people will be looking out for any signs of light at the end of the Zero-#Covid tunnel.
Looks like no changes to Zero-#Covid in #China in a hurry. Xi Jinping just said "people's lives come first; we will not waver in our Zero Covid policy".
What happened when #XiJinping visited Zhangbei. Well, according to #China's Party-controlled media, it was something of a miracle... bbc.com/news/av/world-…
Let's try a little snapshot research. Amongst those living in #China, who knows somebody who has not been fully vaccinated for #Covid? Colleagues? Friends? Relatives? Just thinking about it quickly, I can think of at least six people I've met. Others?
The responses to this are in keeping with the anecdotal evidence I’ve heard from lots of people in #China. Most I’ve asked seem to know someone who’s not been vaccinated against #Covid. It makes me nervous about the veracity of official vaccination rate figures.
I've met people in #China who've thought that vaccination isn't necessary because they're not likely to get infected. They're also fed up with #ZeroCovid restrictions but haven't understood that people like them need to get vaccinated before restrictions can be lifted.
The images coming out of #Chongqing are apocalyptic. Mass #coronavirus PCR tests being carried out as bushfires rage following months of heatwave with a record drought threatening crops and severely limiting much needed hydroelectricity. #China
Some more info on the vast drought across southern #China…
Large queues with what appear to be hundreds of fire fighters lining up for #coronavirus PCR tests in #Chongqing. This shows the priority being placed on zero #Covid in #China. Even as fires rage through forests, emergency teams must participate in mass testing.
The camel head bozo is at it again. I’ll give you a clue: the BBC wasn’t even there. @ChinaDaily is part of this ahem “journalist’s” job description spreading misinformation? Interestingly, this utter garbage has also been re-tweeted by a Chinese diplomat.
So @ChinaDaily we’re still waiting for an apology. I know facts are not the strong suit of your staff but if they’re going to attack people publicly they should probably be remotely right about what they’re talking about and not, like in this case, demonstrably 100% wrong.
