Habemus Numbers!!!
During #WBD’s Q3 2022 Earnings Report (JUL-SEP), it’s unveiled 2.8M boost in global DTC subscriptions, citing #HouseOfTheDragon as the main catalyst, but coming below #WallStreet’s 3.3M estimates, reaching 94.9M total #HBOMax+#HBO+#DiscoveryPlus subscribers 1/
According to #WBD, total subscriptions in the US grew 500k, to 53.5M subscribers, and an ARPU of $10.66, a +1.1% increase
Meanwhile overseas markets were the main driver in subscriptions growth, adding 2.3M on Q3 2022, for a 41.4M international total, with an ARPU of just $3.68
2/
Streaming and subscriptions alone were responsible for 2.3B in revenue, -6% compared to Q3 2021.
Ads revenue more than doubled to $106M, as #HBOMax Ad-tier keeps growing in subscribers.
Even so, overall streaming Costs increased +22% to almost 3B, putting DTC -634M in the red.
3/
biggest challenge for #WBD remains its debt pile, refusing to go down. It finished Q3 with 50.4B in debt, average cost of 4.3% #WBD paid 2.5B of its debt on Q3 and finished the quarter with -2.3B in losses.
Total Q3 Revenue was 9.8B, also below #WallStreet’s 10.4B expected.
4/
During the Earnings Call happening right now, #WBD affirmed they’re happy with how much they accomplished in just 6 months, but used this period to access every single division of the company and assess what’s working and what’s not working.
5/
#WBD announced #JamesGunn & #PeterSafran as the heads of #DCStudios, and have been talking for months with both about plans strategies for their most iconic franchises, and they are working at it right now. #Joker2 starts filming next month.
They mentioned deal with #MattReeves
6/
Claimed that day&date releases & excessive investment in content were flawed strategies
9/
Mentioned #HouseOfTheDragon, #Elvis and #BlackAdam as examples of content that helped to increase broad recognition and awareness by audiences of the brands under #WBD.
Theatrical also saw decrease in revenue compared to 2021 due to less titles released in 2022.
10/
#DavidZaslav said he’s bullish on #DC and #HBO content that will improve financial performances in 2023.
About the write offs, said it was necessary to get rid of contents not working or poised to fail, so they can focus and allocate capital to what is working/ has potential.
11/
Some of the content in WBD’s vast library have been sold and will be sold in the future to others to explore, some will be exclusively explored to third parties, as #WBD search to optimising and increasing content distribution’s revenue, in the US and also internationally.
12/
#WBD has observed the resistance from #HBOMax subscribers to move to the cheap Ad-tier version. They see this as good news, as an evidence of the pricing power HBOMax has, what will help pricing of the new streaming service in SPRING 2023.
13/
#WBD reaffirmed the new streaming service combining #HBOMax & #Discovery will be launched only in the countries where #HBOMax currently is across 2023, with new markets only coming in 2024, or through agreements with third parties to distribute their content in those markets
14/
#WBD mentioned their focus will be in their major franchises that in their views haven’t been explored as much as they should, citing frustration for we “not having a new #Superman film or a #HarryPotter film or a #TheLordOfTheRings film in 30 years” & others not used at all
15/
“We didn’t get rid of any shows that were helping us”, #DavidZaslav reaffirmed several times, tackling the criticism of the 2.5B in write offs & content impairment at #WBD.
“We have the chance of start over this business”
He has clear vision of the future he envisions for WBD
16/
#WBD has #NBA cable rights for the next 3 years, but if a new deal happens, should be as good for WBD as for NBA, as WBD’ll have a platform reaching 100M costumers globally & would love to have NBA on it as under 25 demo might have been left out by having it just on cable.
17/17
And yeah, #WallStreet is not pleased at all with #WarnerBrosDiscovery’s performance in Q3 2022, as the $WBD stock, which had already fallen almost -6% earlier today even before results being released, is falling additional -4% after hours, after listening to the investors call.

#Nielsen’s Weekly Streaming Rankings for OCT 03-09 are in & #Netflix is still the Queen, as crime series #Dahmer dominated both Overall and Original lists with another 2.3B minutes watched on its 3rd week (10.4B cume) in the US, more than 2x the second place #HocusPocus2. 1/4
Speaking of #HocusPocus2, the spooky film once more dominated the #Niesen’s Movies Ranking with 1.1B minutes watched on its 2nd week in the US (3.7B cume) but dropping -59.3% from opening week.
On #HBOMax, #DCLeagueOfSuperPets disappeared after just 1 week in the list. 2/4
In #Nielsen’s original list, #PrimeVideo’s #TheRingsOfPower had 988M minutes watched on its 6th week in the US (6.3B cume) when Ep 7 was released, a +2.3% boost.
On #DisneyPlus, #StarWars: #Andor almost left the list, 356M minutes watched on 3rd week (1.5B cume), -26.6% drop 3/4
But the data provided by #Antenna to the #WSJ also revealed an inconvenient truth: The Phantom menace of Churn is real. Almost 50% or more of the original subscribers of movies like #WW84 and #Hamilton are gone after 6 months in a streaming service. 2/7
The data provided by #Antenna also show how big series such as #Netflix#BigMouth or #Hulu’s #HandmaidsTale although not attracting as many subscriptions as big films, do a slightly better job in retaining most of subscribers attracted during weekend of release for longer. 3/7
Just watched #LicoricePizza!
Beautiful, odd confused love story, with the most aleatory cameos you would ever expect. Another “Hollywood celebrates Hollywood” kinda film.
As a 70s sucker, I loved the vibes, fantastic soundtrack, spectacular job from costume + H&M.
The TRUCK! 1/4
Actress #AlanaHaim is literally a rainbow that fills the big screen with such a different, cinematic beauty & aura. Everytime her face’s in closeup on #LicoricePizza, it’s really magical, classic Hollywood. Director & cinematographer knew how to make the most of her presence. 2/4
I was blown away that both leads #AlanaHaim & #CooperHoffman were making their film debuts on this. So talented, and brought that freshness at same time.
Funny enough, for some reason Cooper reminded me of #MichaelGandolfini as Tony in #TheManySaintsOfNewark all the time. 3/4
Just watched #BlackWidow and I must say, it is SO MUCH BETTER than I thought it would be.
Trailers didn’t do this film justice. I had a such great time watching it.
I’ve never seen an almost entirely women led film with so much cool action. But also lots of emotional stuff. 1/6
It’s so funny that #BlackWidow ironically is the immediate release after #F9, as this one is all about the importance of family as well, for good or bad. And Family is literally the best part of BW. I loved the dynamics between all characters (the trailers sold it so poorly) 2/6
The opening sequence is emotional and wonderful. Loved the children.
1st 2 acts are wonderful. I LOVED them.
But, as in 2017 #WonderWoman, the weakest part of #BlackWidow is the 3rd act. It didn’t bother me that much, but you can clearly see the discrepancy, which is a shame. 3/6
Layoffs at #DCComics & #DCUniverse shouldn’t be a surprise. It’s a process that has been cooking for months now. Who paid attention saw that coming. Important to say: fired executives from DC won’t be replaced for new ones. Others in the company’ll accumulate their functions. 1/4
This is all part of #JasonKilar’s efforts to simplify the structure of Warner as a whole, in order to put #HBOMax as the center of the company and DC brand as its main fuel, and to bring more efficiency doing more with less and quickly + obviously cutting costs in this crisis.2/4
Also, although the trades are bringing it up only now as it was part of the restructuring, #JimLee has actually been overseeing all #DC related stuff in all divisions of the company since 2019, as Chief Creative Officer. He is just getting more work to do after the layoffs. 3/4
In this interview, Mr. Emmerich says that WB’s takeaway from #Aquaman success is returning to the original #DCEU plan: one movie at time more focused on its director creative vision, and less focused in a shared universe plan. No, he didn’t say the shared universe is over. PT1/4
What he did meant is that, in their shared universe, the movie and director individualities come first from now onwards, differing from MCU shared universe, where movies and directors are only team players focused in a shared plan over their own creativity. PT2/4
That was the original plan when the DCEU was announced, but quickly forgotten when WB executives wanted to implement Marvel model plan after it had already started, originating the chaos we all know, with directors quitting, being fired and projects cancelled/badly changed. PT3/4
