🔥🙈#COP27 barely started & recommendations are already adopted that would seriously undermine the integrity of the #ParisAgreement
Last night, the supervisory body on #carbonmarkets finalised recommendations regarding "removals"
3⃣ things to know about this outcome...
🧵[1/7]
2/7 decision adopted in middle of night makes clear that Supervisory Body is pressing forward opening the door for a wide range of “removals” incl. engineering of the oceans to “offset” emissions despite the existence of an international moratorium prohibiting this
3/7 Despite the multiple cases of #HumanRights violations resulting from previous market-based “offsetting” schemes–the Supervisory Body suggest that enforcement of environmental and social safeguards shld remain a prerogative of host country–thus making any safeguards toothless
4/7 To adopt the recommendation, the supervisory body cancelled any interaction with stakeholders as initially envisioned – another example of how observers are excluded from discussions for the sake of pushing forward dangerous outcomes
5/7 📢It is imperative that the #COP27 (CMA) puts a stop to this madness and sends the Supervisory Body back to its drawing board 🚫
🗣️Civil society, indigenous peoples & governments must speak up against the terrifying prospects that such decision would unleash
6/7💡To find out more context about this, please see this thread from my colleague @Eribears who follows these discussions most closely (👁️and follow her for future updates on the matter…)
SpecialRapporteurs demand that States:
🛑🛢️urgently step up mitigation in line w. equity – incl. ending #FossilFuels expansion, regulating businesses & strengthening access to courts
🧑🤝🧑📝include #HumanRights in #ClimateAction plans (ie NDCs) incl. effective redress mechanisms 2/5
🏦🌀establish a #LossAndDamage finance facility, & significantly step up funding for LnD
🆙💰fulfilling and going beyond the $100 billion annual
🗣️🎙️allow for the full and effective participation of indigenous peoples and civil society at all levels of the COP process 3/5
🎇⚖️PATHBREAKING CLIMATE JUSTICE WIN TODAY! The #UN Human Rights Committee finds that Australia violated its #humanrights obligations by failing to take adequate climate action and requests full remedy for impacted Torres Strait Islanders theguardian.com/australia-news…
A thread 🧵1/19
2-📌The case is particularly important in the context of an emerging groundswell of judicial victories for #ClimateJustice as it breaks new grounds with regards to the duty of the States to provide remedy in the context of climate-related #LossAndDamage
3-🗣️Let us celebrate the courage and boldness of plaintiffs and lawyers who brought their complaint to the UN after decades of inaction by the Australian government. This case will have ripple effects beyond what one can imagine today.

🚨unpacking 3⃣crunch issues at #COP26🚨
Presidency shared new texts this morning but they clearly are just drafts & countries must continue to work until more meaningful/less harmful deal can be concluded!
See in🧵below 3 key issues: #LossAndDamage, #FossilFuels, #Article6
👇1/4
2/🛢️on #fossilfuels: #COP26 ref. MUST be strengthened to become meaningful
➡️current wording gives get-out-of-jail-free card to coal extraction, exports, coking coal (=gift to 🇬🇧+🇦🇺)
➡️damaging qualifiers (unabated, inefficient)
➡️ref. to phase-out weakened into "efforts towards"
3/🌀on #LossAndDamage: we need step change in how world is responding
Time for justice is overdue!
draft #cop26 proposal of a new blahblahblah process is disgrace, 14 yrs after Parties agreed to talk about L&D (Bali).
Industrialised countries must support frontlines communities
📛Very concerning at #COP26: many attempts to push #falsesolutions in decision texts to set in stone distractions away from need for real action / fossil fuels phase out ...
Parties must resist these attempts in final hours of COP
See👇👇👇for specific refs
New ref. to scaling up CLEAN power generation: as intensive lobbying at EU level indicates, govs & biz have many ideas what this entails: nuclear, BECCS, gas...
this would be 1st ever ref to "clean" instead of "renewable" in a political UNFCCC decision (draft cover COP decision)
Weakening down of reference to phasing out of coal - suggesting that only "unabated" coal falls under scope of phase out = implicit support for CCS despite repeated failure (draft cover COP decision)...
#COP26 is turning into most exclusive COP over the past decade.
Observers are barred for now from any access to entire negotiating area despite so many reassurances from @COP26 and @UNFCCC Sec.
Even first days of Copenhagen compare better.
Here comes a short thread with context
2/ there are many concerns but biggest is the restricted access to negotiating areas.
Leaders might require a safety zone but this time the entire negotiations are cordoned off. This is unprecedented.
We have only access to a climate fair, 1 supermarket & 2 restaurants
3/ Despite health concerns & very high costs, CSOs & indigenous peoples came from all continents to be heard
🔒But doors remain shut.
Telling Global South youth partners that best for now is to work from overpriced accommodation is literally heartbreaking
Pay attention: after UN #HumanRights Council recognized with overwhelming majority right to clean, healthy and sustainable environment, #HRC48 is now focusing on next resolution: establishment of a UN Special Rapporteur on #HumanRights & #ClimateChange...
Proceedings in 🧵below
🇲🇭Marshall Islands: introduce the proposal for a new Special Rapporteur on behalf of core group supporting proposal (🇫🇯🇧🇸🇸🇩🇵🇾🇵🇦🇪🇺) and additional 27 co-sponsors: scale of climate harms on require stronger international response

🇬🇧UNITED KINGDOM: full support, links with #COP26, need for focus on discriminatory impacts & work in coordination with @SRenvironment
🇺🇿UZBEKISTAN: support for mandate from land locked perspective
🇳🇦NAMIBIA: creation of mandate long overdue. welcome future recommendations
