It’s #SolutionsDay at #COP27. Key solutions to the #ClimateCrisis:
‼️ Phase out all #FossilFuels, NOW not tomorrow
‼️ Halt #Deforestation

Forests play a vital role in:
🧯 Mitigating #ClimateChange,
🐿️ Protecting biodiversity, and
🫒 Supporting the lives and livelihoods of #IndigenousPeoples and forest-dependent communities.

The ability of forest ecosystems to fulfill these critical functions is increasingly threatened by deforestation and forest degradation.
Curbing illegal logging and #TimberTrade is a critical but neglected component in addressing global deforestation.

The onslaught of illegal logging, together with agricultural deforestation and climate-fueled wildfires, is destroying forests, affecting biodiversity, and turning forests from carbon sinks into carbon bombs.

#Deforestation is a leading cause of the #ClimateCrisis, second only to #FossilFuels. Cutting down forests decimates valuable carbon sinks, and forest-dwelling communities face violence and rights abuses while their lands are stolen by agribusiness and commodity companies.

CIEL works to strengthen the implementation and enforcement of international laws and safeguards to ensure the #Trade of species at risk is legal and sustainable, while tackling this key driver of deforestation and protecting #Forest ecosystems and people.

This week, CIEL staff are following:
➡️#COP27 in Egypt to monitor the ambition gap between what States have promised & what is necessary to address the #ClimateEmergency.
➡️#CITESCoP19 in Panama to fight the illegal and unsustainable #Trade of at-risk species.

In particular, at #CITESCoP19, we are advocating for 6 tree proposals under @CITES:
🌳Trumpet tree, Ipê
🌳 Cumaru or shihuahuaco
🌳 Brazilwood
🌳 African rosewood
🌳 African mahoganies
🌳 Pod mahoganies

So far, Committee I has voted to recommend listing of Ipê, cumaru or shihuahuaco, and pod mahoganies on Appendix II. While this is positive news for the future of these trees, there is a concerning 24-month delay before the Latin American tree listings enter into force.

And more needs to be done, so we’re continuing to follow the remaining tree listing proposals. Stay tuned for updates.
