Today is Day 278 since #Russia declared all out war on #Ukraine
Many battles have been won by those defending their homeland, but the war against Putin's hordes continues.
Every day I bring you the important news in one handy thread, starting right here⬇️
A late start today and a travel day for me, so I'll update as and when I can.
Thankfully it remains pretty quiet in terms of attacks and destruction. So not too much news the last 24 hours or so, but you can catch up on yesterday's thread here:
First, I wanted to highlight this report by #Ukraine's respected @pravda_eng
It looks at how, and why, President @ZelenskyyUa gained his own TV channel, while other oligarchs were squeezed out of the media market. This echoes my own concerns:
#Kherson and other liberated towns and villages on the right bank of the River Dnipro are the focus of the daily update from the British Ministry of Defence.
Another big haul of enemy troops liquidated by #Ukraine in the last 24 hours according to today's update from Kyiv.
Aside from personnel very few other losses for #Russia. The total number of Russians killed is still on target to reach 100,000 shortly after "western" Christmas.
The current lull in #Ukraine may not last long. At the weekend an official predicted new attacks by #Russia this week
Today, spokeswoman for Southern Command warned "A missile carrier on combat duty has reappeared in the Black Sea, it can carry 8 cruise missiles"
Almost every day more war crimes are discovered in #Kherson region.
Prosecutors have just started work investigating this wreckage. They say in March 2022, #Russia's troops opened fire on this car and then deliberately ran over it with a tank. 50+ bullet holes in the vehicle.
In occupied #Horlivka there's also been more shelling.
Garages seem to have been hit in the town near #Donetsk.
A man is taking legal action against #Russia after confirming he was locked in an unheated cellar in #Donbas for several weeks after refusing to fight against #Ukraine.
He and other refuseniks had only been mobilised 17 days before.
#Russia used to flatly deny any mercenaries existed. Then admitted they existed but not linked to the state.
Now they admit the link, but just abandon foreign mercenaries when it suits them:
After repeatedly delaying the decision, #Kyiv has finally decided it WILL have a Christmas tree this year despite the war.
Some feel it's inappropriate, but Mayor @Vitaliy_Klychko says he was persuaded to instal the tree after a soldier asked why his children should be deprived.
Interesting.
The flag of a banned nation is ok. But this flag is not allowed?
#Ukraine predicts another large scale missile attack by #Russia tomorrow.
As well as the warship now in the Black Sea, they also say TU-160 planes are being loaded with missiles at the Engels air force base near #Saratov
Ukraine literally has no defence to stop the bombers.
In his evening address to the nation tonight, #Ukraine's President spelled out the suffering of the people of #Kherson
"On this day, as every day, the Occupiers again shelled Kherson and the communities of the region. In just one week, the enemy shelled 258 times in 30 villages"
It's Day 279 of #Russia war and this is the first tweet in the daily thread. Update on the situation in #Ukraine and all linked news throughout the day in real time.
Thanks for reading. If you want to support me with a coffee see my profile page, thanks!
If you need to review yesterday's news, including the night attack on #Dnipro, you can click and scroll here:
#Ukraine's officials are not saying much, but we do know there were two explosions at, or near, the railway station in the city in #Dnipropetrovsk region.
It's Day 276 of #Russia's full invasion of #Ukraine.
It's also Holodomor Memorial Day, commemorating those starved to death by Moscow's regime in the genocide of the 1930s.
This is the daily news thread with all the news, views and analysis on events around the illegal war...
Another fairly quiet night. Long range missile attacks by #Russia confined to outbursts every few days it seems, while artillery pounds the usual targets in southern and eastern #Ukraine
If you missed anything on Friday's news feed, scroll through here:
But yesterday evening they also passed a resolution against #Belarus with Lukashenka "sharing responsibility for war crimes with #Russia", calling for justice at the Hague. europarl.europa.eu/news/en/press-…
#Russia's crack airborne units couldn't defend the right bank of #Kherson - will they fare better in #Donbas where #Ukraine cannot target supply lines as easily.
Here's the UK Intel report for Thursday: #StopRussia
Early, unconfirmed, reports of a strike by #Russia in #Kherson
A rocket landed in the courtyard of one of the high-rise buildings in the city, but no reports of injuries.
#Ukraine tonight has accused #Russia of kidnapping mayors of various mayors in #Kherson oblast.
The Interior Ministry says invaders abducted the leaders of several communities in the region and took them to the left bank of the Dnipro when they retreated.
They remain missing
It's potentially a huge day for the #EU.
The Union is today scheduled to set its price limit for #Russia's fuel.
Two questions - can they set it at a level which can hold and damage the Kremlin, and can they get all members to agree to it.
