As @POTUS gives his #StateOfTheUnion address tonight, we'd like to share our own #SOTU.

Here are five ways we'd like to see the promise of democracy become real for us all in 2023:

[thread incoming🧵] A CLC-branded graphic that ...
1/ Protect & expand the freedom to vote ahead of #Election2024.

This is one of our most fundamental rights, and our democracy is strongest when every voter can participate in it. We're very much still fighting anti-voter laws in court & taking on barriers to #VoterRegistration.
1b/ Meanwhile, in the absence of federal voting legislation, we're very encouraged by the passage of State Voting Rights Acts (aka State VRAs). We hope to see more of them introduced this year.

campaignlegal.org/update/protect…
2/ Advocate for voters in jail and voters with past convictions.

Voters in jail who have not been convicted of a crime should face no restrictions when voting, but many do. They face countless barriers to registering to vote & casting their ballot.

campaignlegal.org/update/can-peo…
2b/ Also, up to 18 million Americans with past felony convictions CAN vote, but most don't know it due to confusing voting restoration laws.

CLC has urged federal agencies to dismantle barriers for voters in jail and voters with past convictions.
campaignlegal.org/update/clc-urg…
2c/ CLC developed a manual to help jailed voters cast a ballot, and & we're working with states & localities to implement measures that expand ballot access in jails.

You can access the manual here -
campaignlegal.org/document/jail-…
2d/ Our #RestoreYourVote program is removing barriers for voters w/ past convictions in court & online.

If you have a past conviction, you can confirm your eligibility or start the process of restoring your vote at RestoreYourVote.org (en Español: RecupereSuVoto.org). The logo for Campaign Legal...
3/ Promote #FairMaps.

The 2021 #redistricting cycle is over, but CLC is still battling racial vote dilution & partisan gerrymanders in court. We're also resisting the Independent State Legislature Theory, which would undermine crucial checks & balances: campaignlegal.org/update/what-vo…
3b/ State VRAs can promote #FairMaps by making it easier for Black voters & communities of color to prove that a map discriminates through racial vote dilution.

We'd also love to see more (say it with us!!) Independent Redistricting Commissions.

campaignlegal.org/update/do-inde…
4/ Advocate for stronger #ethics laws in all 3 branches of government.

We want to see a stronger @CongressEthics (OCE) & the establishment of an independent ethics committee for the Senate. >90% of voters want stronger ethics enforcement for Congress.

campaignlegal.org/update/senator…
4b/ We'd also like to see @POTUS fulfill his #ethics reform promises, because voters have a right to know that elected officials are serving the public interest and not their own wallets: campaignlegal.org/update/biden-s…
5/ Promote greater transparency around how our elections are funded.

Dysfunction at the @FEC is undermining voters' right to know who is spending money to influence our vote & our government. We're filing complaints to expose secret spending, and...
campaignlegal.org/update/why-fec…
5b/ ...CLC is advocating for solutions at the federal, state & local levels to address gaps in  transparency rules, supporting key legislation and ballot measures (like Prop 211, aka the Voters’ Right to Know Act, in Arizona): campaignlegal.org/update/arizona…
5c/ Secret spending, aka #DarkMoney in our political process, deprives voters of information necessary to make informed electoral choices and makes our electoral system vulnerable to corruption and manipulation.

taHere's how: campaignlegal.org/update/5-ways-…
CLC is fighting for every American’s right to responsive government and a fair opportunity to participate in and affect the democratic process.

We've been filing multiple complaints for #STOCKAct violations recently, so we thought it'd be a good idea to assemble them in one🧵
Quick refresher: Under the #STOCKAct, members of Congress must disclose a stock trade within 45 days of the trade. NO exceptions.

Unfortunately, we're seeing a growing, bipartisan trend that shows the current ethics enforcement system in Congress just is not working.
In July, CLC filed complaints against @SenTuberville, @RepPatFallon and @RepBlakeMoore.

All three claimed that they were unaware of the transactions. Under the #STOCKAct, they're still violating the law for failing to disclose trades.

The Americans with Disabilities Act (#ADA) was signed into law 31 years ago today by President George H.W. Bush.

The law was meant to improve access to everyday life, work and our democracy, but voters with disabilities are still fighting to remove barriers to voting. #ADA31
Arizona enacted a law this year that removes voters from the state's permanent early voting list (PEVL) more frequently & requires more steps to obtain a mail ballot. This law creates deliberate barriers for disabled voters in the state. #AZLeg #ADA31

Florida & Georgia have passed laws restricting access to drop boxes and the ability to receive and submit mail-in ballots.

GA #DisabilityRights advocate Gaylon Tootle explains how the law creates barriers for voters like him:

#OTD in 2020, we launched #StopSecretSpending, a web project that shows the importance of transparency & accountability in our elections. It also helps explain why we need to stop #DarkMoney.

Not familiar with dark money & its impact? Our new explainer video can catch you up:
Since the site went live last year, Americans have seen the most expensive #election cycle in history, with over $14.4 billion spent.

Over $1 billion of that was non-disclosed #DarkMoney. Image
83% of voters across partisan and demographic lines want to know who is making political contributions to organizations that spend to influence voters.

Unfortunately, #SecretSpending continues to rig our political system in favor of wealthy special interests.

Today, #SCOTUS will share decisions for two cases that directly impact the freedom to vote and ensuring transparency in campaign finance: Brnovich v. Democratic National Committee, and Americans for Prosperity Foundation v. Bonta.

Here's what's at issue:
Let's start with Brnovich v. DNC.

The outcome of this case will determine if Section 2 of the #VotingRightsAct, which provides protection against racial discrimination in voting, is still a viable tool for protecting the freedom to vote.
As @PaulSmithCLC & @JaydenHohnson wrote in a recent analysis: "The Brnovich case is an opportunity for the Court to make clear that the VRA leaves no room for racial disadvantage in our elections, and that the importance of democratic equality rises above the political fray."

American democracy has suffered attacks over the past decade.

It’s time for change.

The #ForThePeopleAct (#HR1) would enact some of the greatest improvements our democracy has seen in decades. What's in the bill? Here are some of the highlights: 1/
campaignlegal.org/update/how-hr-…
#HR1 will protect access to the fundamental right to vote. It would ensure voters can always register on Election Day and are not wrongfully purged from voter rolls. The bill would also expand the right to vote by mail to every eligible voter. 2/
campaignlegal.org/update/safe-an…
#HR1 will end partisan gerrymandering & ensure #FairMaps for all. H.R.1 requires the establishment of an independent redistricting commission (IRC) in each state, a reform essential to restoring confidence that every vote matters. Learn more about IRCs: 3/

#BREAKING: We just filed an @FEC complaint alleging the Trump campaign secretly hid the ultimate recipients of nearly $170 million in spending. Unlawful secrecy is unacceptable for any presidential campaign; our transparency laws must be enforced. campaignlegal.org/update/clc-fil…
The Trump campaign reported millions in payments to firms headed by Trump’s former campaign manager, Brad Parscale, and other firms, who disbursed funds to the campaign’s ultimate vendors. This had the effect of hiding millions in payments.
We’ve asked the @FEC—the only federal agency dedicated to enforcing the laws governing presidential campaigns—to take action. However, the @FEC lacks a quorum and cannot take action. We need a strong, reformed @FEC to protect the integrity of our elections. #FixTheFEC
