Day 426 of #Russia's needless and disastrous full invasion and war in #Ukraine.

A reasonably quiet start to Tuesday 25 April.
Need a quick recap of yesterday's news? Click below:

#StandWithUkraine

The level of #Russia's losses in the last 24 hours remains in line with recent days. Another 690 killed in #Ukraine and we remain on course for 200,000 in mid-May.

Also note a very large 31 vehicle/fuel tanks.

British Intel today comments on the figures. They are slightly behind the 8-ball because as readers here will know, the trend is slightly up again. But yes, down from the insane numbers when #Russia was launching non stop attacks with cannon fodder.

A medical helicopter has crashed overnight in the Volgograd region of #Russia. The pilot was killed.
News is coming in of a missile attack by #Russia in #Kharkiv oblast.

At least 5 people are injured after an S-300 bomb hit a residential building in #Kupiansk, the town liberated last year.

Friendly 🔥 this time in #Kirov. The local police captain decided to wash a patrol car while smoking. Soon bitumen caught fire and the whole garage went up in flames including 3 patrol cars.

The anti-hero received burns to his hands trying to put out the fire. Image
The @FT reports that the #EU and #Japan are against a complete ban on exports to #Russia.
#USA had proposed the measure ahead of next month's G7 meeting in Hiroshima.

One has to wonder if #Russia flexing its naval muscles near Japan recently had any influence, while #Hungary...?
#Russia's MoD has accused #Ukraine of breaking the grain agreement.

It claims #Ukraine used the "grain corridor" to attack #Sevastopol yesterday (and a month before) with surface drones.

Seems the Russians are desperate to end the deal - the current one expires on 18 May.
#Ukraine's universities are booming - thanks in part to the desire to avoid a military call-up.

The Constitution allows students to defer conscription.
All student numbers are ⬆️40%, but for men aged 31-40 there's a 1,285% increase.
For men over 40 it's up 1,600%

One person's confirmed dead in central #Kupiansk.

The #Kharkiv regional governor confirms a woman's body was recovered from the rubble after the missile strike.

The town's local history museum took the full force of the blast, another employee is still missing. 10 are injured. ImageImageImage
Unconfirmed reports of a "huge hit" on what may be a local Russian military HQ in #Zaporizhzhia oblast.

Some locals in occupied #Tokmak say around 10 missiles hit and there is now frantic activity with a fleet of emergency vehicles flying around.

Just enjoying my first coffee of the day (later than usual), thanks to this kind reader.

It's been announced that the Pope will be heading to #Hungary this weekend.

During the 3 day trip he will meet with PM Viktor Orbán and talk about #Russia's horrific war in #Ukraine.
#Russia's state RIA Novosti news agency says they're using its new T-14 tanks for the first time.

However back in January, Britain's MoD said this would be purely for propaganda and pointed out the drawbacks of deploying the new and untrusted tanks in #Ukraine. Image
Another cemetery of #Wagner's dead has been found.

Taiga, one of the few remaining outlets to try to report the truth in #Russia, filmed this in #Novosibirsk

They say there are 200+ graves and many of the names on the crosses have not been reported killed before.

#StopRussia
Worth reading the translation of yet more illegal, inhumane treatment of Alexey Navalny.

He's repeatedly put in isolation on some made-up charge. He's then shown food he's paid for but not allowed to eat it. It's supposedly thrown away.

Putin's #Russia

The missing person has also now been confirmed dead in the debris of the museum in #Kupiansk.
She is also thought to be an employee.

Eight of the ten injured are in hospital following #Russia's rocket attack.

#Kharkiv #Ukraine
#RussiaOnFire

Just three days ago I wrote here about a train on fire in #Rostov. Today another one on the other side of the country.

This was filmed at the Srednesibirskaya station in the #Talmensky district quite near #Novosibirsk.

Lack of engineers? Replacement parts?
#RussiaOnFire

They even manage to burn their own graves! This is #Rubtsovsk in #Altai region, less than 20 miles (c30km) from the border with Kazakhstan

Again they decided to burn dry scrub grass, but forgot to put a fire break and flames were soon seen in the town's cemetery.
#RussiaOnFire again!

#Yekaterinburg the scene of this big blaze.
It's apparently at a place which makes reinforced concrete products.

Locals heard two loud explosions. Wonder if they make "dragon's teeth"? ImageImage
and again #RussiaOnFire

I'm not making this up, these are all from today.
Thanks Carolynn for finding some of these.

In #Sverdlovsk Oblast they certainly seem short of firefighters. This was daytime in the village of #Sosva but it looks like night as numerous houses burn.
There's more #RussiaOnFire, this one from #TransBaikal region.

Again remarkable negligence as grass burning went wrong, turning into the burning of a timber processing plant, then the entire village of #Balyaga!

All these regions lost 1000s in the war, presumably skilled people
Almost forgot, 25 April is Anzac Day 'down under'. 108 years since their troops first landed at Gallipoli.

This year they also honour the fallen defending democracy and freedom in #Ukraine.

No surprise as S. Africa's President throw out morals & announce he wants to quit co-operation with the International Criminal Court

Ramphosa profits from the war with better deals from sanctions-busting trade with #Russia.
So he won't dare arrest Putin!

A 75 year old volunteer from #Spain has been locked up in #Russia for over a year.

Mariano García Calatayud was captured in #Kherson during a protest against Russia's occupation in March 2022. Occupiers finally admit the pensioner's being held in #Crimea

Day 1238 of the all out war, but also 4,162 days since Putin launched his original invasion in Crimea.

It's Tuesday 15 July and the day after a somewhat deflating series of announcements by Donald Trump.

Let's begin THE daily thread..
All international main stream media are headlining Trump's U-turn on Ukraine.

And while they are correct, none has picked apart the announcements which are more like a left-branch than a 180 turn.

Here's where to find yesterday's news:

So Trump has, crucially, for the first time, allowed US weapons to go to Ukraine, so it is a step forward. And while no specifics, let's hope the best long-range weapons are to be given.

But no confirmation about the U.S. using Russia's frozen assets in favour of Ukraine.

Hello on Day 1237 of Russia's 3-day 'special operation' to take Kyiv.

Could this be the day we look back on as the turning point in Ukraine maintaining a united, free, democratic country?

We'll find out in today's thread, so let's begin..
Before we get into today's news and a recap of overnight happenings, here's the traditional link back to the start of the previous day's thread.

Many people out and about on Sundays, so here's your chance to catch up. Click and scroll, then come back!

So why a special day?
@generalkellogg has arrived in Kyiv to convey expected good news.
The sanctions guys - @LindseyGrahamSC + @SenBlumenthal meet with @SecGenNATO + Trump later, with the US President virtually confirming sanctions and releasing Patriot air defence systems:

So Russia is currently 1233 days behind schedule in its expectation to control Kyiv.

I've documented it here every day. Saturday had some more blatant Russian war crimes, starting with more death and destruction.
If you were away from screens, catch up⬇️
Starting with breaking news as Ukraine has announced it has killed the assassins of an Intel officer gunned down in broad daylight in Kyiv a few days ago.

Intel boss Vasyl Malyuk says a special Russian FSB/combat group murdered Col Ivan Voronych.

Hello again and welcome to the weekend and another daily thread. All the important Ukraine news, fact-checked, every single day (never missed one yet).

It's Day 1235 and signs that Russia is becoming increasingly desperate. Let's begin:
Don't know about you, but I was up most of the night documenting another huge Russian attack.

If you missed it, you can catch up on that, as well as the rest of Friday's news by clicking here for the start of yesterday's thread:

23 missiles + almost 600 drones flew from Russia overnight, trying to destroy Ukraine's infrastructure, culture & people.

Air defence did well, shooting down 25 of 26 Kh-101 cruise missiles.
Of 597 attack UAVs, 319 were shot down, another 258 stopped via EW, or decoy drones. Image

Day 1233 of a war that's the biggest threat to the future stability of the lives of every person reading this.

The root cause is extremist, imperialist and anti-democratic forces being allowed to wage war unchecked. Ukraine in the firing line today, but who's next? Here's the🧵
Another very difficult night for Ukraine, especially Kyiv, with more deaths now confirmed in the capital.

It was a second successive very long and loud night for many. To bring yourself up to date on all yesterday's news, click the link:

First breaking news this morning from Kyiv, where a man has been shot dead in the Holosiivskyi district of the capital.

It's now been confirmed that the victim is a colonel of the Security Service of Ukraine.
The gunman used fired from a gun with a silencer and fled in a SUV. Image

A very bright and warm good morning to you, on Day 1231 of Russia's war of choice

Putin's choice to invade a sovereign, peaceful neighbour, to ruin the economy, to send hundreds of thousands of his countrymen to die

Is the tide about to turn? Here's THE daily thread on Ukraine
Well 2 days ago I was optimistic, and today that optimism is borne out.

But first, let's backtrack to yesterday, and in among the forehands and backhands, I still managed to produce a good thread with a Pimms or two🎾

An awful lot of people criticised me (well, I picked up a lot of bots and Kremlin stooges too) for saying that the Donald would backtrack.

But I read the runes and I was correct. Trump has unequivocally promised more weapons for Ukraine.
