It’s Day 2 of @LearnTechUK & my first session is about Learning Personalisation. Personalising #learning can improve retention & performance. But how do we get there? Nicola McNeillie from @AstraZeneca & David Kelly @LnDDave from @LearningGuild will tell us. #LT23UK#T4S4
David is up first! And he starts with a hilarious story. He spoke at @LearnTechUK yesterday on #EmergingTechnologies & when he was looking at his social media mentions yesterday he saw one that said “Personalised learning doesn’t exist” attributed to him. Whoops! #LT23UK#T4S4
He totally did say that by the way (which is even more funny) but what he meant was that #personalisedlearning in its truest sense doesn’t exist … yet. It’s more of #buzzword and he wants to take some of that buzz away to make it more real. #LT23UK#T4S4
Oh you might be wondering what David looks like up on stage. I’m providing many angles so you can see what a dynamic performer he is. Here he is in full flow - you’re welcome! #LT23UK#T4S4
David tells us #PersonalisedLearning comes from academia & with that comes the baggage of how we learned at school & what we think learning should look and feel like. This gets in the way of being able to understand what it could and should look and feel like #LT23UK#T4S4
David also reminds there isn’t currently a shared understanding of what the words “personalised learning” mean. There is no shared definition in our industry. Different people see it differently and that’s a massive part of the problem #LT23UK#T4S4
The meat of David’s session gives us things to consider when embarking on a #PersonalisedLearning journey. There are several:
⭐️ Available tech
⭐️ Resources like time, money, expertise
⭐️ The environment - your own
& the where the learning is being consumed. #LT23UK#T4S4
Continuing on:
⭐️ Data - what do we know about the individual so we can match the person to the content.
⭐️Whether it works within the wider or culture & training culture
⭐️ User competency to access learning
⭐️ The context of what the learner
is doing and how #LT23UK#T4S4
Up next on the @LearnTechUK stage is the amazing Nicola from @AstraZeneca . And here she is on stage! (Getting it in there early this time) #LT23UK#T4S4
Nicola tells us that @AstraZeneca has been on a learning journey over 3yrs. In 2020 they provided learners with learning personal to them based on their roles or future roles. But in 2022 they decided to do adaptive learning using #AI and #MachineLearning#LT23UK#T4S4
Nicola and her team at @AstraZeneca needed to make the case for change. They engaged the services of @Deloitte to help and found that #AdaptiveLearning could not only reduce the forgetting curve but also make the #learning more measurable. They jumped at the chance! #LT23UK#T4S4
Nicola then shared a deep dive centred on a change @AstraZeneca made to an Anti-Bribery & Corruption (ABAC) course. Before #AdaptiveLearning it was a mandatory 20min module for all employees 1x a yr. Only completion levels were being monitored. #LT23UK#T4S4
After #AdaptiveLearning time to take the course went from 20mins to 12 mins giving 11,000 training hrs back to the organisation. They were also able to demonstrate a level of mastery across various populations & proficiency on an individual level. #LT23UK#T4S4
Final key learnings from Nicola:
⭐️ Stakeholders must be involved from the start
⭐️Questioning skills needed to demonstrate competency & mastery
⭐️ Content strategy & robust taxonomy needed
⭐️L&D professionals may also need to upskill to manage new data & insights #LT23UK#T4S4

The next session I’m covering @LearnTechUK was made for me. Not only is it about #learning but it’s about #Agile as well. Whoop whoop! We’ve got Jodie Pritchard from @CitizensAdvice and Richard Kerridge from @HPE. I can’t wait!!!! #LT23UK#T3S5
Jodie’s up first and she starts with a reminder of what the #AgileValues & #AgilePrinciples are (pictured) with a reminder that we can replace “software” with whatever we’re making, that simplicity is a focus on what people want and co-location with working closely #LT23UK#T3S5
By the way, in case you were wondering, here’s what Jodie looks like up on screen and here’s how you can find her on LinkedIn where she’s more active: linkedin.com/in/jodiepritch…#LT23UK#T3S5
In the final session I’m covering today at @LearnTechUK, Michael Edwards & Maya Harris from @McKinsey share their internal process to help informal #learning happen more often & more systematically. I look forward to telling you all their secrets in this thread #LT23UK#T2S3
Neither Michael nor Maya are active on Twitter (sad times) but if you wanted to know what they look like and what they do - here you go! At McKinsey Michael is Global Leader, Way We Work Director of People & Ops. Maya is a Senior Learning Manager. #LT23UK#T2S3
In this session we’ll be talking a lot about #apprenticeship but not in the the traditional sense. At @McKinsey they use the word “apprenticeship” to mean #OnTheJob#Learning on the job. This is really important for the context of the session (& this thread). #LT23UK#T2S3
Does the focus on building skills mean we might be missing a trick when it comes to improving wider org performance? No clue - but I bet Charles Jennings @charlesjennings has some insight & answers! I’ll listen in here at @LearnTechUK and keep you posted, shall I? #LT23UK#T3S2
Covering the session with me is the one and only Ben Waldman @LandD_Ben - so you KNOW I’m already having ALL THE FUN. Let the tweeting begin #LT23UK#T3S2
And guess who the chair is?!?! It’s a friendly face. The one and only @ZahraCJ! Hey Zarah!!! 👋🏽👋🏽👋🏽 #LT23UK#T3S2
Did you know that Louisiana in the US is the first place in the world to have climate refugees due to flooding. They may be the first but @tessrobinsonLAS tells us they won’t be the last. #LT23UK#T5S1
We just got asked how people in the room feel about #climatechange. Here are some of the answers from Menti. #LT23UK#T5S1
