Ahead of the #CouncilOfEuropeSummit, CIEL, @Greenpeace, @amnesty & @hrw joined forces to call on @coe Member States to recognize the right to a #HealthyEnvironmentForAll through the drafting of a dedicated protocol to the @ECHR_CEDH.

On May 16-17, @coe nations will gather for a once-in-a-generation Summit in Reykjavik 🇮🇸.

This is an opportunity for European States to reaffirm their commitment to core European values, including the rule of law, democracy, & #HumanRights.

But doing so will require more than a family photo featuring heads of State: States should use this opportunity to fill a yawning gap in the European human rights framework & take a decisive step towards effectively protecting the right to a #HealthyEnvironmentForAll.

The European human rights framework remains the ONLY regional #HumanRights system whose political institutions do not yet explicitly recognize the right to a clean, healthy, and sustainable environment.

Establishing the legal protection of this right @ECHR_CEDH through a protocol will:
⚖️Help catalyze meaningful environmental protection & more ambitious #ClimateAction across the continent,
⚖️ Promote legal certainty & consistency across Europe, including for corporate actors.

In brief, the benefits are clear: all that’s needed is the political will.

The next step? Following the political recognition of the right to #HealthyEnvironmentForAll by ALL @coe Member States at the @UN, is the actionable & enforceable recognition of the right to at home.

The world is in a race against time to avoid the worst outcomes of the triple planetary crisis, and it is high time for European governments to live up to their responsibility.
